Three (3) people have died in Mpulungu while 12 others are missing after a boat they were in capsized on Lake Tanganyika in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
And police in Mpulungu have arrested the owner of the boat to help with investigations over the ferry accident in which 28 people survived.
Both Northern Province Permanent Secretary Emmanuel Mwamba and Regional Police Commissioner Mary Chikwanda confirmed the development in separate interviews with ZANIS in Kasama today.
Ms. Chikwanda said 28 people have so far survived the ferry accident from the ferry which was carrying about 50 people against a capacity of 12.
The boat is reported to have been ripped apart into two pieces by heavy current on the Lake Tanganyika resulting in some passengers drowning.
The incident happened near Chinsanza fishing camp between Nsumbu and Kapembwa Islands on Lake Tanganyika.
Meanwhile, law enforcement officers have intensified their search for missing persons on Lake Tanganyika following the ferry accident.
Are we serious as a country, you mean a boat with a capacity of 12 people carried 50 people. Please let us stiffen the laws. Whoever is in charge of that ‘ferry’ should not go unpunished.
when you are told that “the bus is full, u keep on begging until the owner has no or is left without option but to carry you” thats what you get. its not the fault of the owner of the ferry but the people that board the ferry, period.
May their souls rest in peace. Hope we do more to invest in the provision of safer transportation for what is one of our beautiful but under used regions.Â
its UKWA at it again.
Life vests people, every craft must be mandated to have them.
Dog watch writes: Evil occurences: 11 drown in Mpulungu. Barking mad dogs with rabies. Did it not occur to them that perhaps the boat was overloaded with passengers on the ferry. Every accident is an evil occurence to them and showing dead people was crossing the line of showing dignity for the family. Did the family give them permission to publish the deceased lying on the ground. They should have been sued for that by the family.
Why read their new?? stick to LT or Post!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If the boat was shuttered by a wave, from engineering point of view, this means the materials were already fatigued from perpetual overloads. This points to the carelessness of law enforcement agents who get birbe benefits from such careless acts. This will not end. In fact, PF was voted with the hope that Cycle Mata can excerise his ruthlessness to bring to an end to such lawlessness.
What a shame. The owner and the passengers are both wrong. No need for finger pointing, the solution is to put restrictions on the number of load.
@Chibesa I don’t read the dog watch for the sake of it, no, I read it to see how many brain aneurysms they get in a day from jealousy. Their psychology behind negative reporting never ceases to amaze me. What do they want? blood spilled! Lusaka times publish the same stories like dog watch but its not with malice or contemptuous. Am I right or am I wrong??? You don’t need to answer because I’m right. Â LT have stories about musicians, bible quotes, sport… and not anti this or that. It’s a pleasure to their stories/articles.
