PRESIDENT Sata and his wife Christine Kaseba were yesterday among hundreds of people who attended the inter-enominational thanksgiving church service for the 48th Independence anniversary at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross.

Delivering a sermon at the service, Zambia Episcopal Conference Secretary-General Father Cleophas Lungu challenged leaders to deliver on their promises.

Father Lungu said the 48th Independence anniversary is an opportunity for leaders and all Zambians to reflect on which direction the country must take.

He said Zambia can be transformed into a country where all citizens can have access to basic needs.

“The past 48 years have been a time of nation building where all the 73 tribes have lived in harmony, in line with that uniting motto by our founding fathers, One Zambia One Nation. Let us have a clear evaluation as a nation on which direction we are taking. Zambians are waiting for leaders of integrity to deliver on their promises,” Father Lungu said.
Fr. Lungu also challenged Zambians to work hard and complement the efforts of government, as opposed to entirely waiting for government to improve their lives.

And Fr. Lungu has called on government to create an environment that will protect women from gender-based violence.
He cited the gruesome murder of 19-year-old National Institute of Public Administration student Ruth Mbandu, as one of the worst violent killings the country has ever experienced, which must not happen again.

Fr. Lungu said people must not be subjected to gruesome murders and should be allowed to go about their lives freely, with a sense of security because Zambia is an independent country.

He said there is need for Christians to pray for a “spirit of restraint” to overshadow perpetrators of gender-based violence.

And Seventh Day Adventist Zambia chapter president Max Muvwimi said President Sata has proved to be a God-fearing leader, as evidenced by his attendance of mass at a Catholic Parish in Japan where he had gone on a working visit recently.

Reverend Muvwimi said Zambians must emulate President Sata and take time off their schedule to worship God.

He said Zambians must unite and work hard to realise the country’s vision of prosperity.

“God has given us brains to achieve a lot. Let us not always wait for leaders to do things for us,” Rev. Muvwimi said.

Earlier, President Sata led the faithful in observing a moment of silence in honour of Mama Betty Kaunda whose widower, first republican president Kenneth Kaunda, was present.

President Sata later read a Bible passage (Luke 4:16-22) while representatives from church mother bodies also took turns to read the Bible.

Choirs drawn from various churches, including the combined defence forces choir, also took turns to sing hymns at the occasion.

Among the notables at the prayer event were former first ladies Vera Chiluba and Maureen Mwanawasa, cabinet ministers, service chiefs, National Restoration Party president Elias Chipimo and deputy speaker of the National Assembly Mkhondo Lungu.

Mr Chipimo was the only opposition party leader present while others were conspicuously absent.

Meanwhile, Dr Kaunda who walked hand in hand with President Sata after the mass, danced to a song by the Patriotic Front women’s choir and cheered many people who marvelled at the dance moves of the 88-year-old former head of State.

This was the first public appearance Dr Kaunda has made since the burial of his wife who died on September 19.

  1. so what happened to milupi, hh and others? nabanenuka or they think being absent will cause zed to grind to a halt? guys, zed went on auto pilot on May 17th 1972 and since then its been on a way to no where. We need a proper visionary after KK and the current crop of leaders are failing to connect to the dot com generation and if you leave out such, ask ba MMD, they cried the day election results were announced and kanitundila honored his word by crying if sata beat him.

    • I agree with you we need to choose healthy leaders these are concentrating on keeping alive and looking after their pockets so that even when they leave they have good bank accounts.

  2. Just worship whoever you want to worship. We don’t want the Talibanisation of Zambia. There’s nowhere were it is written that it is compulsory for every politician to attend a Catholic gathering. Besides the same Catholic Church picked the PF as the party to support during the last elections. So why should the MMD or UPND attend a function of a Church which hates them? In Zambia Catholicism=PF=Bemba! Enough said!

    • Sir you have missed the mark.Hatred for the Bembas will lead you no where.Form a political party and let Zambians vote for you.We are free to support any political party.Zambians chose PF because it had a message to them, more money in their pockets period

    • you Goncalves you are mad.if they say inter-enominational, they don’t mean catholics only. ulichipuba saana.Leave catholic alone.VAFFACULO VA’!!!!!!!!!

  3. THEY IS NO INPENDENCE TO CELEBRATE ABOULT WHEN ZAMBIANS LIVE IN ABJECT POVERTY;INDEPENDENCE IN ZAMBIA IS FOR POLITICIANS IN POWER SUCH AS THE PRESIDENT WHO GET TWO PENTIONS THAT IS GRATUTY WHILE IN POWER AND PENTION WHEN RETIED

  4. I really cant stand this Chipimomo every time I see his picture I detest the whole story, who is he?
My Father was in politics and a lot of you know him, was not as photographed as this little nonentity, I cant stand dull people

Could someone confirm, as to whether once once is started doing their PhD they could still apply for a scholarship, the fees are becoming monumental and our current focus, myself and my fiance is that we may have to sell a car for me to complete my studies
Where are the best places to look for , in terms of PhD scholarships
Ideally I want to be a Dr before I am 30

    Thanks

    • Mushota, you are a very interesting person. But the way you put your views across leaves much to be desired. Learned as you claim, you may fail to complete your PhD study because the way you put reasoning before others is pretty disconnected.

    • The best word that can fit u mushota is VAFFACULO!!!! Don’t boast too much, if u come to find a Job from me i will say know.iwe uli ulefye ku scotland!!!!VA A FARE LA CACCA!!!!!

    • And how much do u take home, net of tax?? Remind us again of thoz dollars baby coz its like ur now returning to the realities of life. So Lemmy Mushota was yo dad??? Anyway no comments but pliz we want thoz figures u brag about. Am sure u dont need a scholarship madam rich educated once a Zambia but now Scottish. Enjoy life in the diaspora!!

  5. #7 CHIPIMO Jr IS A PRINCIPLED GUY AND HE’S FREE TO MINGLE WITH ANYONE, YOUNG AND ELDERS. BUT FOR THOSE WITH A GOOD VOCABULARY OF INSULTS THEY SHY AWAY FROM SUCH AUDIENCES. HH ONLY GOES OUT WHEN SATA IS OUT OF THE COUNTRY- HAVE YOU NOTICED THAT. HE’S A PRISONER OF HIS OWN PRISON.

  6. Mushota, if you have failed to get a scholarship or have no money, just take a break my dear and come back to Zambia. Contruct a stand and sell tomato at John Chinena on Kabwe road. You will raise enough money to continue your Phd. Don`t sale your boyfriends car. It is probably the only asset he has.

  7. KK is a an OLD worthless LION. Yesterday he was in Church but has failed to help solve the BA64 which he was instrumental in creating.

KK is alive and soon to be no more,, DOES this old man want to leave this issue unresolved?????

We shall say bad things to him and tear his legacy the way Kaingu tore Sata’s speech.

he should NOT hide that Mourning cause KK has had a lot of time to reflect and help put to REST the BA64 issue.

But he is looking forwatrd to his Death and 14 days National Mourning for him when he has NOT helped solve the BA64.

KK is showing cowardice in LIFE.

    • It will be a miracle if you continue living by the way you keep insulting the elderly, especially a man in mourning like our founding father. Walitiipwa iwe and the end is very soon to come for you son.

  8. All well meaning and patriotic zambians should celebrate indepedence. The poor or rather poverty will owaz b there. So in poverty lets have sumthg 2 smile abt.4get yo sorrows and dance.tymz like this happens once in a while

  9. Chipimo has got timing for plot 1. It is not just a matter of mingling with which ever age. It is a question of getting support when it comes to elections

  10. I like Chipimo though am PF strong supporter……he knows how to show leadership….one cant hate the other forever….this is good for him…I see him being a leader of the opposition in Parliament if MMD is playing their game in this manner…watch this space

  11. #14: One Zed, one nation. KK did his part to unit you. BA 64 does not make sense anymore, coz within BA there are other tribes fighting to break away. Visit your History and learn to understand why One Zambia and one Nation was there cry at that time. Because of people like you. Open up and invite people to invest in BA for development to happen. Wake up man!!

  12. @Mushota#9 You are ever dreaming of attaining a doctrate not understanding that you have to successfully pass your undergraduate courses before you can attempt to jump. Mushota, you have a questionable academic background in that one can easily deduce from the manner in which you lack in constructing arguments of analogy and understanding intricate deliberately manipulated grammar. I wonder how you managed to pass all the difficult courses during those years when you did your masters. I find it hard to reconcile your below average profile with your claim that you are pursuing a PhD.

    • Remember Matero University? Probably that’s were the hallot bought her degrees from. I think she has what killed her father Dr Remmy Mushota and hence her confused contributions most of the time. Remember the ranting of her father before he was dropped as a minister? Balipasha umwana ba Lemmy.

  13. The people of Zambia should take time off to worship God…..i agree as most people take time to drink beer.God bless KK more than the bootlicker OPPOSITION who was present.Too bad for Ruth (HRSRIP)

  14. @MUSHOTA#9
A real PhD student does not refer to other people in order for him/her to put a point across because a student in that level is highly critical, independent and fluid, as meaning that no one can box such an entity in any one form hence, you see that the element of fluid is reflected/mirrored in this simple analysis. The “critical” element comes into play because as a knowledgeable student you accept nothing based on face value or empiricism and objective reasoning but you have to weave the aforesaid with the social constructionism theory in a specialised level. Thus, the combination leads you to where facts are hidden.

  15. @Mushota#9
You do not have enough money for your courses and you expect us to take you seriously.By the way, so many universities in both the boring Scotland and UK offer scholarships to needy deserving students and my colleague just returned recently from your newfound homeland where she obtained her post doctoral master of science in psychopharmachology. This is a highest qualification in pschology on earth. I do not understand as to why you are hinting that your ‘Nick’ and yourself will probably sell your old scrape, you bought from a junk yard somewhere there in Scotland.

  16. This lying and tribalist government does not even remember what they promised the people during the campaign. All they are hell bent on creaming off at every opportunity. The activities of RDA, Ilunda Chalo, point to one thing; PLUNDER!!

  17. Mushota, was it not a few weeks ago that you bragged about your earnings and your partner’s. Now you are brock and you don even have enough to pay for your school fees. Shame girl. Even if I new where you can go to I would not point it to you becuase of your towards black men attitude which I think is bad. I would not want to be associated with a chap like you. Nick must work his butt out to meet you half way instead of srewing you when you are supposed to be networking and looking out for opportunities.

  18. KK is a dissapointing man to me personally. He must also complete his memiors so we know how he has lived his life. Yes, he was part of the Barotse issues and must be in the center to try and sort this out instead of trying to please the preseident who we know he once denounced. It seems the MMD defeat was eating him to the borne this old man. Some of us who where already adults know how Zambia was ruined during KK. Women woke up as early as 03:00 to line up for sugar. We were refered to as S-t-u-p-i-d i-d-i-o-ts by this same old man.

    • Man, Dr Kaunda did a lot of good for the country and for us born in the 60’s and before. We enjoyed the good things that the country offered. Free education, free rides if you were young, free entries to movies etc. Things only changed when he started supporting and advocating for the liberation of the entire southern region and africa as a whole. The peoples of south african, zimbabwe, angola, mozambique, botswana to name but a few appreciates the sacrifices he made because the western world punished us by blocking trade and anything to do with our country. Don’t blame the founding father for doing a good deed to other nations. Yes, we suffered a bit, but it was all worth it. Now you can even go down south without hindrance.

  19. @32, My dear, when you think of what is found in the bee-hive, you can’t enjoy eating honey. In the bee-hive, there are centipedes, millipedes, dead frogs, snails, dead snakes and so on. But when honey collects in there, you take it out and you enjoy eating. So, by gones are by-gones. Just wish the man God’s mercy so that when that day comes, he will be received in God’s own glory. I always pray for him after all! I am a proud Zambian! Thank you!

  20. Mushota. there is a saying that ..He who knows the way travels faster. First you should have asked yourself, do you really need a PhD? or you just need it for prestigeous purpose?? You do not just wake up in the morning and say I want to do PhD, it requaires strategic planning, financially, and etc. I fi you did your homework well before starting ..that is you stated, you would not be asking such questions. My understanding is that, a Shark can leave the Ocean and want to go swim in dry lands??? almost if not all universities do offer scholarship grants to deserving students. The very SADC countries you look down, sevral scholarships, just begging for people to undertake, so just do your home work properly starting with the very institution you are in..that is if you are in alread

  21. MUSHOTA,very ILLUSION,first of all DID MUSHOTA finished her UNDERGRAUTE COURSE?from the way she writes, those of us who read and attack the lines,i found her crititical to her claim.therefore I AGREE WITH THE WRITER #27 AND WRITER #30.ALL WE ARE ASKING IS, WHICH SCHOOL IS MUSHOTA ATTENDING PHD?every time mushota writes its all about PHD,as i said before ,we do have lots of zambians with MBA,MS,PHDs,but not at any given time they have come up from the blues and just say ,look guys i have a MBA OR PHD .lots of zed’s are well educated well enough,i for one im tired of FAKE MUSHOTA WITH PHD, THING.MUSHOTA, u lack critical reasoning,or analytical thinking.FINISH YOUR UNDERGRAUTE FIRST ,THEN WE CAN TALK ABOUT MBA NOT PHD.proud zambian.

  22. I CONCUR WITH MWENDANJANGULA DURING KKS TIME PEOPLE WERE QUEING FOR MEALIE MEAL SUGAR COOKING OIL AND THERE WAS LITERALLY NOTHING IN ZAMBIA. PEOPLE ARE NOT GOING TO EAT THIS SUPID SLOGAN OF ONE ZAMBIA ONE NATION.HE WAS JUST BRAINWASHING US.KAUNDA USED TO CALL ZAMBIANS STUPID *****S.HE CAN CELEBRATE HIS INDEPENDECE WITH HIS SATA THEY ARE THE PEOPLE WHO ARE BENEFITING FROM THIS SO CALLED INDEPENDNCE
