The United Party for National Development (UPND) has called for the immediate removal of Zesco Managing Director, Cyprian Chitundu.

UPND Livingstone District Spokesperson, Neto Halwabala, said the statement by Mr Chitundu that no load shedding will be experienced during the 20th Session of United Nation World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) general assembly and after means that Zesco is currently doing it deliberately.

Speaking to ZANIS in Livingstone today, Mr Halwabala noted that for Mr Chitundu to issue such a statement shows that they have a solution to the load shedding that is currently rampant and being experienced across the country.

He said major organisations that offer a much-need service in the country like Zesco should not just offer solutions to impress tourists and other foreign delegates but should first strive to serve the local people.

“We should not wait as a country for big events like the UNWTO in order to offer a solution to issues such as load shedding. This is uncalled for as it raises dust that they are doing it deliberately and can be alarming if not careful”, he said.

He advised Mr Chitundu to stop issuing such statements if all the company will do is offer a temporary solution for load shedding during that period.

Mr Halwabala said Zesco should strive to provide quality service all the time.

He said electricity is a major economic driver and the power utility company should strive to provide quality service.

    • Typical Bemba’s, you want to drive an expensive car and eat nothing at hme. you want visitors not to experience load shedding when you conutry men have been crying

    • Typical thinking of most average Zambians, you let your own child suffer by denying him/her what is their privilege or entitlement at the expense of the visitors. This thing of being good to foreigners than your own son or daughter is what has reduced the dignity of Zambians to the levels of ******.

  1. i wonder what is in the heads of UPND lads; so you are expecting the load shedding to continue even when we are hosts to such big events…guys guys please!! let us be realistic and talk about developmental issues. You don’t have to oppose to anything to be identified and call for resignation on such matters. Have you seen his plan of how ZESCO will curb load shedding in that short while…UPND….i wonder sometimes the kind of politicians in this party.

    • Bemba saying goes like this “akacila ka mbushi kasengwila epokekele” meaning a goat’s tail cleans at its own area before helping out.

  2. Why please foreigners in the first place? This is total Muzungu anikonde mentality. Why do we blacks mistreat each other.

  3. These UPND vuvuzelas should seek for more inforamtion before opening their gob. This assurance is a short term measure which cannot be sustained in the long term. ZESCO will probably have to import power from Eskom or SNEL (DRC) at 14 cents per KW and sale at a 6 cents per KW, incurring a loss of 8 cents. Because of the magnitude of the event, it is in Zambia’s best interest to have uninterruptible supply during this period so as we are not banded in the same wagon with countries like Kenya or Nigeria where tourists are advised to carry with them generators for guaranteed power supply.

  4. This man is talking lots of sense. Why should we play double standards by impressing visitors instead if citizens? Is it not you PF cadres and your leaders who are saying give zambians the best before you give foreigners. H.E. MCS said if you have little food, you give it to your son and your neigbour’s child. PF cadres, please use your brains and not your hearts!

  6. kambogolo!!!! how do you receive yours guests at your place, if at all you not a dependant, don’t you serve them right? certain things is just common sense.

  7. UPND is very right coz Chitundu has completely failed yesterday the rest of the country was busy watching football apart from parts of chingola were load shedding was effected 10minutes before the kick offf time. Am a PF as well as a Zesco employee our MD has been the worst. He is surrounded by nicampops wake up ba chitundu otherwise inchito yalapwa.

  8. we should not be seen to impress the guests coming.zesco shoulkd endeavour to provide electricty regardless. this eratic supply of electricty is damaging our equipments both in our industries and our homes. please do not insult other political leaders when they make constructive comments to the way pf is running this country. we are all zambians this country does not belong to bembas only or the pf only

  9. Zambia and the Southern Africa Power Pool has had a power deficit. Load shedding is inevitable until we overcome the power deficit in our country. The power projects currently underway should should resolve the deficit by the time the tourism congress is held. Does the UPND ***** need a PhD to understand this?

  10. UPND always speaks from without. we fear to say anything because one of us was already bandled in the car and was only saved by police just for saying something in parliament.

  11. You guys commenting above are just *****s, why should we always be seen to impress visitors when we cant even impress our own people. Typical Zambian inefriority complex. Maybe ZESCO needs to be embarrassed to the world for them to wake up! Why look for a temperal solutions when they should be looking for a lasting solution to the problem? This load shedding thing has been going on for a long time, you guys above, supporting ZESCO tell us please, what solution has been put in place so far, and it is working? The only solution ZESCO needs is to generate more power and/or build more generation plants to sustain the growing population and minnig industries, thats it. And please dont tell me they dont have money for that, when Micheal Sata and his friends owe them over K200 Billion!

  12. Tell Sata and his friends to pay and then we can see an improvement in ZESCO. But ZESCO doesnt even need that money to improve, what they need is a serious management that will lead this company into solving the problems that this utility company has. ZESCO is always collecting money from us Zambian, why not channel that money to improving their services rather than always buying new cars and paying useless allowances. It doesnt take a rocket scientist to figure out what they need. Now that the world is coming to Zambia they wake and realise they need to do something about the load shedding and f00ls above start clapping!?! my goodness, when are we Zambians going to wake and demand what is best for us.

  13. Some bloggers??? and this UPND chap very dull! how do receive visitors in your homes. If you have a bit of cash don’t you make sure U buy ka boom so wash the linen your visitors will sleep on, bana even sleep pa sitting room & leave bedroom for guests, maybe even kill a mkombwe (rooster)…its called hospitality and thats what this UNWTO indaba all about. The smooth hosting of this even is of great benefit to national tourism sector and Livingstone too. And unless U don’t follow news/developments the power problem is Zambia is huge we still depending on KK built power station and currently the are massive project underway of upgrading and building new power plants that will only be operational in the next couple of years.

  14. I am amazed at people’s ignorance on load shedding. Load shedding occurs because the generating capacity is exceeded by demand. The only time Zambia had excess capacity is in KK’s time because the mines were not expanding. The immediate and quickest solution was to improve the efficiency of the generators at Kafue Gorge and Kariba Dam which has taken long because of corruption in the award of tenders. This corruption case involving a French company is well documented except that we do not know the govt officials involved.
The other solution was to build new power stations. We were hoodwinked into believing that construction of the 600MW Kafue Lower had started by RB just before the elections.

  15. The shortage of power in this country is not the problem of Zesco. It is the problem of our politicians. We are relying on power generators that were installed in the 50s and 60s. Kaunda did some few things but we started having shortages during UNIP. Chiluba did not invest in generation but made Zesco his ATM machine. Same with Mwanawasa and the drunk RB. We have not invested in generation for over 40 years. Zesco does not make these decisions but GRZ. My call to the PF is to do something different and not to be distructed by the Under5 Tonga Trible party. The rest of the country will never vote for these tribalists.

    • KCI. It is Kaunda who constructed Kafue Upper 900MW and Kariba North Bank 600MW. Before independence we used to rely on thermal power stations on the Copperbelt and Lusaka and from 1960 on the Kariba South Bank power station in Southern Rhodesia. In short all the major power stations were constructed by KK.

  16. These hydropower projects take time to complete and require huge investments ($2B for Kafue Gorge alone). Although the Electricity Act was enacted allowing for private investment it has not been forth coming because of the low tariffs. Where does Chitundu fit in all these? These are govt decisions.
Please note that Victoria Falls produces 108 MW which can easily cater for Southern Province including L/stone and can be isolated from the rest of Zambia so that we do not embarrass our guests.

  17. I support you retired engineer. May be you should come back to work. I shudder to imagine what type of government some of these loud UPND cadres would ever come up with. May be also some of these cadres should be sent to school so that they donot emabarass the who nation with senseless comments.

  18. PF vuvuzelas have their stupi.d heads up their smelly arses! It is okay to impress foreigners because Zambians don’t deserve a decent life ! No wonder the Ching Chong are slicing off your stinking body parts for K 15 million. A nation of a.s.s holes!

  19. KCI. All major power stations were constructed by KK i.e. Kafue Upper 900 MW and Kariba North Bank 600MW, Before independence the mines produced electricity from thermal power stations and there was one in Lusaka. From 1960 we used to get electricity from Kariba South Bank.

  20. These PF vuvuzelas, why are you supporting anything. You are also affected, i see you complaining on FB about loadshedding. UPND is trying to stand for you but you are hiding in the sand. fools

  21. #20 thanks. So Chiluba Mwanawasa and RB did not do anything. 1960 to 2012 of no investment in the sector and UPND are asking the current MD to resign? We need Jesus.

  22. So, Mr Senior Engineer Rtd, why is Livingstone not being supplied continuously, given that they pay for the elctricity, if they have a generator nearby? When will we stop window dressing, lying, pretending? I really hate ‘one day development’, whereby there is development only when there is a bye, visit by dignataries, etc. We need ‘365 days development’ – sustanable development, and if the leaders can’t provide it, then they better step aside, period!

  23. WE WANT TO WELCOME THE THREE COLIGUES WHO HAVE JOINED OUR PROGRESIVE WALK, WE AGREE WITH THE MOVE EDWARD MUMBI HAS TAKEN TO RESIGHN FROM UPND. WE SAID IT WHEN WE STARTED BLOGGING HERE THAT THERE IS HUGE CLARKDOWN IN UPND. THE THING IS OTHER TRIBES IN UPND ARE NOT WELCOME, WE WANT MR SATA TO FINISH THIS TRIBILISM….FROM ONE MAN HH.

  24. I have noted how some families only taste Coca Cola when visitors call on them! This is what is being extended to running of the entire country. There is a point to this. In any case, what parts of the country will bear the brunt of this guarantee not to load shed during this meeting? What should those who will be affected brace themselves for? This, I believe, is the crux of the matter. Lets not buy Coca Cola only when visitors come calling!

  25. Leave the man alone. Sometimes we need to reason before we comment. Common sense tells me that Zambia does not have the capacity to generate power that can meet the demand. But it is possible to import and meet that demand which they can afford to do for a few days during the meeting. However that does not mean Zesco can afford to that everyday obviously due to the fact that they would be making losses. The only solution to our problem is to continue pumping money into increasing power generation capacity and to look into for other sources of energy like gas, use of Solar panels. Here in the UK gas is used alot and the government gives loans to individuals home owners to purchase solar panels just so that there can be other sources of energy. Sitingapuzileko naise.

  26. THE WAY UPND PEOPLE REASON REALLY BEATS MY UNDERSTANDING. THEY LOOK AROUND TO FIND SOMETHING TO MAKE THEM SAD SO THAT WHEN THEY CRY ABOUT IT,PEOPLE SHOULD HAVE SYMPATHY ON THEM. HOW CAN YOU HONESTLY LEAD A NATION BY BEING SO PETTY. GROW UP YOU GUYS. ARE YOU ALWAYS GOING TO BE CRY BABIES?

  27. Typical tonga mentality. everyday so and so must step down, how many poeple should have steped down by now? and why dont you also ask your u5 to step down after misleading masses with the sudan story? let him step down for us to take you searious. *****s

  28. #33 if UPND continue like this, they will be very shocked how many votes they will get in 2016. A bitter party that just complains on lies and small issues.

  29. Yes, Yelebwebwe but Zambia does not have gas resources of its own but it has abundant sunshine. The biggest consumerof electricity in a home is an electric geyser. If govt encouraged the use of solar geysers in homes with electric geysers (not Mandevu) by subsidizing the cost or removing tax on imported solar geysers this can result in a lot of saving of electricity maybe to the tune of 100MW equivalent to constructing a new power station of the same capacity but these are policy decisions to be made by govt. It is a win-win situation because the consumer will also pay less. You cannot save electricity in Mandevu where they use charcoal to heat water as one RB wanted us to believe.
