The Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) says the route taken by the ruling Patriotic front of luring opposition Members of Parliament is not good for democracy.

MMD vice president administration Brian Chituwo said in every democracy, the role of the opposition of providing checks and balances to government is respected.

Dr.Chituwo said democratic practices anywhere in the world demand that a leader of a particular government must be kept in check for the smooth running of government.

The MMD vice president said when his party was in power,it respected the existence of the opposition in the country.

He noted that the aspirations of the majority of voiceless in the country will not be met taking into account the rate at which the PF government is coercing opposition Members of Parliament.

Meanwhile NAREP has strongly condemned the unprincipled stand by Opposition members of parliament to cross the floor in order to protect their Deputy Ministerial positions.

NAREP president Elias Chipimo stated that each by-election costs the country in excess of K6 billion. He said in the midst of crushing poverty, persistent and increasing load-shedding, widespread lack of access to clean water, poor infrastructure in peri-urban and rural areas, appalling health services, deep-rooted corruption and massive unemployment it is nothing short of alarming for the PF government to be advocating the defection of MP’s from the ranks of the Opposition. This he said would trigger by-elections at enormous expense to our treasury.

Mr Chipimo said holding 10 by-elections (which is where we may end up before the second half of next year) could therefore amount to a staggering K60 billion in unbudgeted expenditure.

K60 billion exceeds half the average amount allocated for the refurbishment of the main hospitals in Lusaka, Ndola and Kitwe next year.K60 billion exceeds half the average amount allocated for the refurbishment of the main hospitals in Lusaka, Ndola and Kitwe next year.K60 billion is more than the money allocated to supporting youth empowerment programmes through skills training in this year’s budget. K60 billion is 20% of the funding allocated to the procurement of maize this year through the Food Reserve Agency.

  1. MMD is dead ba chituwo what are you talking about, dead dead, will only remain 2 parliamentarians, inluding chituwo

  2. PF govt needs to be reminded that politics has become modern…. A politician shouldn’t be used to plunder public resources on unnecessary bye elections… Politicians are put into power to spearhead development and not to enrich themselves… Zambia in this instance is going backwards with PF at the helm….

  3. CRY my beloved country, please dont vote them back, teach them a learning lesson to those who might have the same intention in near future

  4. Are Africans born daft, stupid?are we gona seat back and watch our country vandalised? its time again for the Zambians to rise as knights, lets join hands and form the 2016 campaign facebook “the matching order ” Chipimo or some else maybe our next Presi, i dont live in African but i feel all Africans

  5. The PF is playing the same games MMD played when they were in power. They started with finishing off the Heritage Party by poaching its MPs in Kabwe and created unnecessary by-elections there. They did the same to PF with the so called rebel MPs. PF could not expel these MPs because the MMD went further as to even compromise the judiciary and the speaker. When you are in power and able to change things, do it as if you are in opposition for you will be in opposition one day. The same cries we are hearing from the opposition today, we will hear them from the PF one day.

    • Kitwe Boy from Bulangililo you have spoken well. Again Nevers Mumba said he will expel thm. so instead of waiting for that let them cross over twalibelela. Nevers even went a step further trying to go to state house without appointment to meet the presido on why he can fire his Mps.

  6. The president needed to exhibit maturity in politics instead of being in fore front telling opposition MMD MPs to resign and join his party at the expense of the poor health care, social amenities and the like. If anything Zambia was supposed to develop at higher level considering that president Sata is very experienced politically but with his behaviour i wonder if he has even 10% care for the majority poor Zambians! shame….

  7. Ur all the sem, power goes to yo heads en u thnk u will be there forever. Look at how stupid and stubborn Winter has become, shocking. The problem Zambia will ever fight to develop is the illiterate majority rural population! Thez citizens hav less economic and political data such that they vote with the wind…. Wake Bane, wake up Zambia

  8. Sorry to say but its not PF’s job to ensure the opposition is intact so it can give “checks & balance” just yesterday the say opposition was saying they’ll make Zambia ungovernable for PF by blocking policies in parliament. Now they’re getting screwed over & crying foul…politics is a dirty & dishonest game. The biggest and No.1 flaw with our democracy is the constitution what PF is doing by law is totally legal but if U follow natural/social justice its wrong, wastage of resources. Second to blame here is MMD’s unprincipled MPs who can’t stand by their party and easily swayed by their stomachs.

    • The issue here is not the legality of the matter, it’s all about morality. Yes it is within the ruling party’s power to do as they please so long they do not break the law. But is it moral to spend these monies when the nation, YOU AND I need to see results of a progressive form? People should be worrying about making Zambia a prosperous country, not a haven for mediocrity. Ask yourself this, how much value are these bye-elections going to bring to the country? Who apart from that particular MP will benefit from it, in the meantime it is safe to assume that people will clobber each other, from that we can even expect deaths. All so we can have a stooge sit on the correct side of the room!!?? So I ask you sir, why are you more concerned with a political party than your country?

  9. MMD started this game and they are now having a taste of their own medicine. Tough luck guys, but you are headed for doom; you dug a very deep pit as a trap for your enemies, but we have the pleasure of allowing you fall into it. Ask pasor Mumba how his followers felt when he ditched his partyy to join MMD, ask PF how it felt when Machungwa and the other rebels stubbornly refused to tow the party line because they were under your protection or when at the Pope square rally FTJ asked UNIP members to surround their membership cards in order to kill it. Chaona mzako chapita mawa chili pa iwe.

  10. Ba Chituwo,

What has changed now??? You were in government when Mwanawasa was busy luring opposition MPS. Why didnt you say something then iwe??

Just shut up and let the game be played

  11. POINT!

MPs who resign their political parties voluntarily should not be allowed to contest re-election during the current parliamentary term. They should be made to wait till the next General Elections.

However, if they are sacked by their party for working with government or for criticising their own political party because of policy error on the part of their political parties, they should be allowed to re-contest for re-election on adoption by another political party or run as independents.

As the above is not law, it would be helpful to come up with a similar law in order to protect our democracy, and instil good values and ethics in our parliamentarians.

  12. MMD should just market themselves, when it was them luring the Faustina Sinyangwes, Peter Machungwa and Nevers Mumba their current president why didn’t advise his masters then. North Western province is going PF not to mention Eastern and Western province. Dr Chituwo should understand that politics is about numbers and the more PF MPs the better to accelerate development without enclave leaders and failed pastor parroting nonsense. MMD is going into oblivion and the earlier Dr Chituwo realises this, the better otherwise he better start thinking of which business venture will be able to sustain him when loses the next elections under MMD poultry, piggery, lodge or pub.

  13. Some Zambians are very dark, that charcoal darkness that scares you to the core
Its pretty uncomfortable when you are used to look at someone white and they you look at someone black, the contrast at times can be very uncomfortable on one’s eyes

Its like choosing between a color TV and a black and white, no contest really is there?
    Thanks

    • If you are black, going by your name you are a pitiful, self loathing and hating specimen going for a human being, your level of inferiority complex is beyond comprehension and if you are white masquerading as a black person then again your level of envy of the black race is eating you up so much that you spend your time hallucinating with anger and hate. Please try to understand the science of colour, black is origin,a dominant colour, a primary colour out of which you get other derivatives by implication it is the superior colour of humanity. Please do also understand it is what it is partly for protection against the sun based on the environment of our areas of natural habitation. Tell this to your parents, you are a very sad specimen of a person.

    • Mushota that’s racist! Demeaning you own race? Girl you are sick. If that’s you on the picture, your complexion is not even close to a colored person. & working genetics from origin, your parents are very dark let alone your grannies. Its piercing to know you are just as disgusted when you look at them. Change your attitude!

  14. NOW ZAMBIANS LET US PUT A STOP TO THIS FOOLISH INJUSTICE, LET US PASS A LAW NOW THAT WHO EVER IS EXPELLED OR CROSSES AS AN MP NOW CANNOT STAND UNTIL 2016. U WILL SEE HOW THESE FOOLS WILL RETRACT AND START TO GLORIFY NEVERS MUMBA AND MMD. IT’S THE SAME
IF U FAIL AT UNZA U EXCLUDED, THEY DONT SAY DESPITE FAILING EVERYTHING GO TO NEXT YEAR!!!!!

  15. Dr.Chituwo! What are u also doing, as a party, to keep your members? If there is a good program, your people will stay.Otherwise, you will lose, not only the MPs, and other grassroot members as well. Think about it.

  16. What do you do when your stomach is rumbling with hunger your children have been chased from school for non payment of fees, it’s no longer a morals game it’s about reallity, so you cross to asure yourself of a monthly income!

  17. I agree with # 13. all we need is a constitutional law or statute, whatever you call it to bar some one who resigns from one part, or expelled from one part to stand for elections in another part in the same year. You may argue this by ” freedom of association but for the interest of national economy, and avoid wastage of national resources we need this approach. I have never seen such kind of defection like Democrats joining Republicans in the USA or even in UK? and cause bye elections?? I may be wrong. that is economic subotage

  18. The soultion is in Electrorate” please you should never vote for such people. NGOs can pick this to educate and decampain such individuals. or tell the governement that if bye election are to held, first respective areas, should first demand certain services to be provided beofore they can even vote for anyone. That way, it will mean the Govenrment has to spend money in development before they can go to vote, but also be told that there is no gurantee that, its MP will be voted in or hold it as dont kubeba and in the end never vote for the guy that defected.

  19. @Mushota#14
Lady Mushota, your comments are not meant for proper reflection of black people as human beings who enjoy equal treatment which encompasses dignity, respect and the recognition that to be a darky is not a sin but it is a well constructed race which within itself has individuals who are well-adjusted even though there are individuals who also make a considerable large number of deviants, a direct result of a societal definition and a biased social construction of the subjects as a ‘sub-culture’ based on unequal power relation or inequalities in relation to limited resources. Therefore, lady Mushota do not be a racist but be a progressive individual

  20. Those opposition members of parliament who want to cross the floor are unprincipled and dont deserve to be voted into office. they are not serving the interest of the people they claim to represent but their own personal selfish interests. Mark my words. Those guys are traitors. How can we make the ruling PF accountable to the zambian citizens if all the men and women are defecting. Is that what we call cost to democracy. If going by Chipimo Jr’s arithematic K60BN is alot of money and can do alot of wonders for retirees and buying equipment for hospitals etc.

  22. @Mushota#14
Lady Mushota, please retract your comments because there are very offensive and racist indeed.I am very uncomfortable with your utterances and I find very hard for you to suggest that our dark brother’s complexion somewhat makes you uncomfortable. Appreciate our construction as a race not as a rejected group of humans from somewhere as if the world is doing us a favour to be here. You know what none of that which makes a racist to be what he/she is, means a thing to the oppressed or the target group of racist treatments which a racist unleashes.

    • iwe naiwe mukongo wanoko you are just adding viniger to the wood.you and mushota are the not only racist but also satanist.

  23. Pure bullcrap for the opposition MMD to cry foul, when they are the ones threatening to sack their MPs for working with the government. This is simply self serving and an exercise in futility. MMD sacked Masumba and the people of North-western province( Mufumbwe in particular) taught them a lesson. This water testing exercise back-fired and now they have their ergos to protect rather than just avoid by-elections by allowing the MPs to work with the government. If you continue bo Opp, you are in for a rude awakening! MUSHOTA, kwena you are a real B!TCH and you just don’t give up, do you? This is not a debate about our dark skins, but about opposition MPs crossing over to keep their ministerial jobs. By the way MUSHOTA, you are a racist!

  24. Further Mushota, if I can find you, I would kick your butt so hard you would land in on top of mount Everest you ignoramus ape! You are as annoying and irritating as a boil on somebodys’ butt. Get a life you miserable pathetic pitiful racist!

  25. chiwamila galu kuluma mbuzi not mbuzi kuluma galu!!!!!Chutuwo should be reminded that when he was minister he allowed his boss appoint PF MPs, what has become sinister with PF to doing the same? We are moving towards real democracy,in America ruling and opposition work 2gether.Think like a doctor or may be you got yo qualifications through the window

  26. @Mushota#14
I am very mad with you today. You know what, your friends are all racists and you are simply giving us the feed back which they give you after judging you as a socially-constructed disadvantaged Mushota not as a lady who is constructed to attain her achievements based on her abilities and cognitive development. Please notice the difference between the two approaches, the former one is meant to humiliate lady Mushota or anything which is closely related to her or that which the in-group members deem to be less white. Whereas, the latter one is meant to refuse to judge you based on your meritocracy, yet you have the same abilities or better than what they can achieve.

  27. 6 billion per by election, that money can be used to tar the roads in some of these run down compounds. What a misplace ment of priorities.shame on you Sata

  28. FYI – Mushota is LT themselves creating drama. So don’t bother yourselves commenting on his ramblings. Just check his comment on male circumcision and you will confirm it.

  29. @ MUSHOTA
*****!!!!!!!! You are such a disgrace. If zambia is and its people are so inferior to you,why do you even bother to blog on their sites.
MY DEAR CLOSE YOUR EYES AND IMAGINE YOUR SWINE NIK IN BLACK. wala ipuntula ku buubiiiiiiiii!!!!!
I have never seen an inferior human being as you. Ee imwe mu myanga pamatako yabasungu ati mukashike. you were supposed to be born in the 16th centuary. Ubututu Ka Mushota. VIITUU!

  30. DONT BLAME PF…THE MMD MPS HAVE NO MORALS..PERIOD…WHY BLAME ANOTHER MAN IF YOUR WIFE FLIRTS WITH HIM…DISCIPLINE YOUR OWN!!

  31. I am sorry I am not LT
and I am  nothing as low rated standard as you Nubian, says a lot about depicting a flower as their image.
You are hypocritical, greedy, violent, malevolent, vengeful, cowardly, deadly, mendacious, meretricious, loathsome, despicable to talk about me

I have always said the truth on LT, and if you want some attention I would give you that

    Thanks

  32. Don’t hate the player, hate the GAME….. Levy (MHSRIP) did this when you were in power, WHY didn’t you stop him or speak out that it was going to injure democracy…. Keep yapping while others cross over. If you can’t beat them JOIN THEM!!!!

  33. Democracy, all the way.Everyone has the right to join any political party of their choice just the way you are free to vote any party of your own choice…………..So MMD MPs are free to join any party of their choice.Hon Chitwo, Mp, what are you still doing across the river? come with the canoe or boat and join us

Long live PF and Long live the Mps joining to freedom!

  34. After being dribbled by FTJ in 2001, MCS was and is still bitter with MMD. Unfortunate MCS’s quest for revenge ( completely eraze MMD) may cost PF. It is alleged that Taima and others owe CEEC billions. So their defection is more of self preservation than the fake wiilingness to work with the ruling party. NDELOLESHAFYE.

  35. This a a vote of no confidence in Nevers Mumba. Why are his MP’s leaving him? Where is the true blue MMD to take over the party… Mumba has failed?

  36. I feel sorry for brothers and sister who answer Mushota, she is a Chainama case and I do not bother with her. Coming to MP Chituwo, he is correct and all who love Zambia should agree with him so that we do not go to one party state. Mpangula Mpyutu you too are right if those who cause by elections were left out all this business of wasting our hard earned money would stop, unfortunately we need to vote for a President who will not think about himself but the future of his grandchildren. Read the Kenyan constitution and you will be impressed, still in Africa but our friends have moved on. All big positions are interviewed for live on TV not appointments of non performers dragging us 20years backwards. It makes me cry sometimes that my country is going to the dogs

  37. #17 Mushota that’s racist! Demeaning you own race? Girl you are sick. If that’s you on the picture, your complexion is not even close to a colored person. & working genetics from origin, your parents are very dark let alone your grannies. Its piercing to know you are just as disgusted when you look at them. Change your attitude!

  38. MMD “MYSRIP” you dug your own grave and deepened it by corruptly allowing Mumba to take to the helm of the party. You need leaders not bullies as the case is . Do not threaten MPs and treat them as if they are children. Rest in peace MMD as we work with the party that has a visionary leader in SATA. Viva PF as we buy clothes with more pockets for more money!

  39. It does not make sense to say that since the MMD made mistakes then it is justiable for the PF to make the same mistakes. I write this to those people who say that MMD inticed opposition MPS so there is nothing wrong for the PF to do the same and MMD sholud not complain. Iam not for that kind of reasoning.

  40. Sata has done nothing constructive to help boost our economy. He has spent a lot f time creating and shuffling around  districts. It seems like he plays droughts (I was going to say chess but……) with his staff, hiring firing and transferring. His appointment as President (sadly) doesn’t seem to have sunk in, thus this constant quest for bye elections  to remind himself about his position. This is  very unnecessary and will bring unrest in the country. Its  a pit his advisors are too scare to offer advice as the ultimate will happen….the sack!

  41. Thank you Zambian , it’s our poor country to suffer, we need to iron out all this flaws in our constitution, this just shows how impoverished and unprincipled these MPS are , only after their bellies, :)>-

  42. #47,we are not saying MMD made a mistake by appointing opposition MPs as ministers,it was good for our democracy. What we refuse is to say its bad because its PF doing it,why? How?

  43. Mark,Nice post but how about my blogger blog? I think it’s ptrety well optimized but I’m sure there are still tons of things I could do. Or do I just transfer it to a wordpress blog? I’ve heard that the big G doesn’t like posts/ blogs being deleted so is transferring seen in the same light? My whole Google setup will get penalised? Thanks, Martin
