Ruth Mbandu’s killer insists that police give him his items

Share

The man, who allegedly administered a lethal drug, raped and participated in the peeling off of Ruth Bandu’s facial skin has for the second time appealed to the Lusaka magistrate to help him get his belongings from police officers who arrested him.

Collins Kasiye Sooma, 23, of Mpika, who allegedly confessed to have participated in the gruesome murder of 19 years old NIPA student, informed the court that despite his earlier appeal to court to help get the belongings, the police officers have not done so.

Sooma made the appeal when the matter came up for mention before Lusaka Magistrate Betty Malupenga yesterday morning.

“Your honour, last time we appeared before this court, you told the officer to give me back my clothes, a dish and soap but they have not done so. I need those things. I want to be using them,” Sooma complained.

In response, Magistrate Malupenga told Sooma that she would issue a warrant to the officers so that they could give him back his possessions.

However state prosecutor Paul Mwansa asked for an adjournment as the state was still waiting for instructions from the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) to have the matter referred to the High Court for plea and subsequent trial.

Prosecutor Mwansa told the court that the state had not yet received instructions from the DPP.

He told the court that the state was sorry for the delay but promised that next time the matter comes up, there will be progress on the case.

Sooma is alleged to have recounted and confessed how he and other people hit Ruth with a sharp object on her head and injected her with a lethal drug before gouging her eyes and reaping off her facial skin.

Sooma, who has since become a sixth person arrested in connection with the murder, is charged together with Ruth’s uncle George Kalomo, 31, Bishop Evans Ngulube 58, Edward Siangima 28, Emmanuel Serenje 23 and Jordan Kapembwa 25.

Magistrate Malupenga has however set December 12, 2012 for another mention as the state awaits instructions from DPP’s office for the accused to be committed to the high court.

  1. WHY IS THIS CASE TAKING LONG? JUSTICE PA ZED. IF U SUE PF, THE CASE WILL BE EXPEDIATELY DONE AND PF RULED INNOCENT.

THIS IS NOT GOOD FOR DEMOCRACY.

  2. Maybe the police are holding on to the items as they might have some forensic evidence so maybe the magistrate should layoff a bit. The shirt might have the victims DNA, the dish might be identified as an exhibit of evidence if it was used during the crime. This is how cases get washed away when evidence and exhibits start being tampered with or manhandled with out care

  3. # 2 the story is self explanatory, read through again and then apply your mind. Ruth’s case is not the only case on the court’s roll. Its called procedure chief. Those PF cases if dont need to be refered to another court obviuosly they wont take long.

  4. Either those items are suspected to have been used as accessories in the commission of this crime or the poice fear this guy believes in juju and hopes to use those to either escape or influence the course of the case. In either case, police should get him a different dish, buy him a shirt and some soap to use, but hold on to his items!!! Why is he adamant on them?????

  5. I remember someone mentioning on this site that if ever the police give this guy his belongings, his will be story of the year winning by a landslide….wait and see

  6. I can imagine how annoying it is for Ruth’s Family to see how this clear case is dragging. This boy confessed to have killed Ruth, what else do the courts want really? Such a clear case to go on and on???

    • This killer just lives in Mpika he is from Tanzania. Guys let us be open and say things that will help us as a nation. They should not give these things to this killer. The big question is why does he want these things? To RUN AWAY. These things should be set ablaze

  7. Indeed, this is very suspicious. PF comes into power and suddenly we have a lot of deaths and mayhem. Surprise, Surprise one of the accused in these ritualistic murders is from Mpika. Are you thinking what I am thinking?

  8. #11 That iz the due process of the law in Zambia. You are not thinking of Sharia Law? Any way, both lawz have their own pozitivez/negativez depending on wich side of the case one iz.

  10. I concur with # 4 & 7, the man has confessed and if the articles confiscated from him has forensic evidence on them, then the Zambia Police should oblige and buy him a new shirt, dish & soap. After all he still has rights as he is just a suspect and not yet found guilty by the correct court – the high court of Zambia. # 12, Mei Matungu or mama ntungu, learn to be objective. Sooma is not a name from Mpika, but this guy used to reside in Mpika. Do you want all people in Mpika to be Satas’ relatives?
This is the kind of stupidity that gains you a bufoon status!

  11. # 13, Chendabwamba really suits as your name! How can any normal person start making such insinuations? You really have a serious case of psychotic over imaginative thinking! Stop creating monsters were there are none, the murderers are just your fellow deranged pscho-paths and have nothing to do with PF. Fyola atase!

  12. Iam getting concerned with the slow pace at which this case is being processed! Some body has already accepted the charge, what more do you want? That’s why some people end up taking the law into their own hands, though that is not the right channel, because of such delays that will end up acquitting the assailants. In my opinion I still feel retaining the death penalty in the constitution will be the right thing. That goonk has gone ahead demanding with courage to have his belongings back. If you don’t know those things will help him to be acquitted. He has some night powers invested in those items. Don’t ever give him back those items if you don’t want judgement to be influenced by darkness powers!!

  13. What is wrong with the DPP, just to issue instruction it should take 9 months, we want to see justice prevail quickly and forget about these murderers before they pounce on others in the cells!

  14. Atase, how can this murderer even complain that he has not been given back his belongings? Really dude??? After committing such a gruesome act he thinks he is entitled to special treatment. Some people have no soul.

  15. pliz polise service our hearts are bursting deal with those guys.and dont give him back the things he wants to escape pliz.
