The Police in Zambia

By Dr. Charles Ngoma

Not so long ago, I wrote about the need for reform of the Zambia police service. That call seems to have fallen on deaf ears. The recent activities of the police service in Zambia, and in particular against the leader of the Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD), Dr Nevers Mumba, are a clear indication that the service is not a service at all but an instrument of political oppression by the powers that be.

It looks like barbarism of the Zambia police is on the rise. It is very sad indeed to see such unprofessional behaviour of our men in uniform in a democracy. Public Order Act or no Public Order Act, it is wrong to use power so arbitrarily as the Michael Sata led Patriotic Front government is doing.

If the Public Order Act was really what it says, why is it applied selectively? What our police men and women need to know is that when it comes to paying for human rights abuses, ‘following orders’ is not accepted as defence. The same advice goes to the military. The recently reported orders, allegedly, by the head of State to shoot to kill civilians in the Western Province of Zambia is, I hope, an order that will never be obeyed. Each and every one of you will have to account for their actions individually. May I suggest that you follow your conscience, because one day when the music plays, you will dance alone.

  1. Batata ba Ngoma mulichipuba. These things have been going on for a very long time. They were there in Raphael mwebene ati Roy Welensky’s time. You wrote all the nonsense leading up to the elections last year.

When the shoe is on the other foot comes to mind here.

    • Dr Ngoma’s point is simple. Zambians voted for CHANGE, so to say that what was there in the past, should carry on in the future is not on.

  3. Ba Ndoma! What was the intention of stealing a ballot. Its good you are back to reality maybe your Dr. will be meaningful now.

  4. He didn’t call him President..
    He didn’t call him King..
    He didn’t call him Ba..
    He didn’t even include Chilufya..
He simply called him Michael Sata

    • Well spotted and rightly so! Some of these titles need to be earned and not just expected…And Sata and his PF Govt do not deserve any of such salutation. How does one refer to Musamba as honourable?

    • In English, Michael Sata here is adjectival. It is describing the Patriotic Front government. It is not disrespect. For example, one would say the Obama Administration. It is not Obama who is the subject of the predicate but administration. I hope this short English lesson helps.

  5. un principled people becoming principled. this Ngoma is a PF cadre just because he has not been given a job he is crying foul. Sata is no good. the man is blank he doesn’t know what to do soon he will resign very soon that is why wynter is busy campaigning. how can you run a country when you have no history or experience of management. things are not good in state house watch the space

  8. Police are good pipo. They require to instill discipline. Not long ago many were calling MMD pipo theieves. Now they are being jailed, you are complaining?? Police if you are in doubt, consult Wynter on the Law.

  9. After reading these comments, it seems like people did not want change from the way the MMD and UNIP ran things, they just wanted an opportunity to do the same as well. So, we changed people, but not the way things should be.
    Naine ndilepo!
