HH welcomes defectors from MMD and ADD as he refutes the PF single women sex remark

Opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) president Hakainde Hichilema has called for a united opposition that would provide strong checks and balances to the Patriotic Front governance of the country.

Mr. Hichilema said Zambia needs a strong, stable, and visionary opposition adding that the UPND was the only party that provided that platform.

He was speaking at a media briefing to welcome over 250 people who joined the UPND after defecting from the Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) and the Alliance for Democracy and Development (ADD).

He said unity of purpose was essential for the opposition because the UPND was not his party but for all Zambians.

Mr. Hichilema said he believed that there was a leadership crisis in the country hence people were joining UPND to replace the Patriotic Front (PF) government which he accused of being repressive.

He urged Zambians to align themselves with the UPND as it was the party that would address the many challenges such as mealie meal shortages, costly transport and electricity load shedding.

Mr. Hichilema told Zambians not to be scared to rise to the occasion and called on his party members to begin door to door campaigns to recruit more members.

The UPND president has meanwhile advised government not to push for by elections and spend billions of Kwacha but instead use that money to address the mealie-meal shortages in the country.

And Mr. Hichilema has refuted the statement attributed to him as having said single women should deny their PF boyfriends sex as a way of protesting against poor governance.

He said the remark was false and misleading.

Recently, Mr. Hichilema was reported in the media as having told single women to deny PF boyfriends sex as a form of protesting against the current governance style, remarks that have attracted condemnation from certain quarters of society.

But the opposition leader said he never said such a thing and challenged those who were saying he said those words to come forward and show proof.

Mr. Hichilema said records and tapes were available and it would be shown that he never made the statement attributed to him.

He added that he had a lot of respect for women saying that his mother, wife, daughters, cousins, and nieces would attest to that.

Defectors from the MMD included former Ambassador to Libya during the MMD regime, Mulondwe Muzungu, the New Kasama branch which dissolved its executive, 30 members from the FM choir of Matero, 57 members from Kabwata Market, 27 from Kalingalinga, veteran politician Paul Phiri, Stephen Chikuta from ADD and many others.

And UPND Secretary General Winstone Chibwe called on Gender Minister Inonge Wina and leaders of the women movement to rise and condemn the picture that was published on page 15 of the Post Newspaper yesterday, 27 December 2012.

Mr. Chibwe challenged the women movement to take the Post Newspaper to task alleging that it promoted pornography far worse than what it alleged the UPND leader said.

He said the picture that was published in the entertainment section of the paper was degrading and demeaning to women hence the women must go to the Post Newspaper offices to demonstrate.

  8. You will keep dreaming of being President of Zambia, but will never be such a one. Maybe in the next Century if at all you will still be there. You will always be under 5 with PMs from one sided of the Country. Come 2016, it’ll be PF, come 2021 PF, up until 2041, maybe you can think of supporting someone from your party to contest as president, but never you hichilema. Namashina fye, how can you be president of Zambia with those names?

    • Which Chainama patients have you so systematically lined up to win all these elections? I am afraid Zambians are not so stu.pid as to vote for another Chainama case. State House was never meant to be a mental asylum. This is the last PF leader to occupy the British Colonial Governor’s mansion. Even if the next PF candidate (patient) also marries a live-in personal Doctor…..Zambians will show the PF the door. You people are an embarrassment to Zambia.

  14. The rate at which politicians switch political affiliation can be described as  political promiscuity, While sometimes it’s warranted, it’s the individual motives that are questionable. It seems more like political posturing to me motivated by mostly self serving goals.

  21. The problem with UPND is marketing its leader to the rest of the country,i was a hard core UPND supporter when AKM was president because then,it was representative of every Zambian.As long as that marketing HH problem is not solved,UPND will be an opposition party forever.

  27. HH should learn to apologize to people if plans to rule Zambia, denial is not a best solution when your spokesman has  gone on record defending what you said as true. His PR is letting him down. It is things like this which come to haunt them at campaigns during elections, they will play them over and over to convince the women voters that he does not respect them. If he apologizes, he can always point out that he did apologizes for those words and hope the people forgave him.

    • Yep! Moving to UPND is productive while moving to PF is destructive. Please note that there will be no election after these defections.

    I for one am Bemba and have no problem with Tongas or any tribe in Zambia. Tribalism is in one’s mind. Period.

    • Good point, if USA has no problem with Obama, why should we have a problem with a Zambian. if anything apart from LPM all the other presidents we have had were Zambian’s by decent.

I have come to learn that most Zambians are sick in the head.Madness and there is need  to pray for healing.If you look at most of the bloggers here and their posts you will agree that there is little or no sense in what people write here.am sure bloggers represent a cross section of ordinary zambians and its not looking good

  41. People who hate others purely on tribal lines are failures in reasoning. They dont love Zambia and they dont care about the better future for their children. Who started they game of tribal consciousness in Zambian politics? President has even worsened the game by appointing ministers and chief executives of companies almost from one tribal grouping
