Government is considering constructing hostels with a total capacity of 23,000 bed spaces at public universities in the country.

Minister of Education, Science, Vocational Training and Early Education, John Phiri, revealed that plans were underway to construct hostels at the public universities this year to address the accommodation problems they were facing.

Dr. Phiri told ZANIS in an interview in Lusaka today that his ministry was working with the Ministry of Finance under the private public partnership (PPP) arrangement and the process was moving on well.

He said government was working at modalities to create 10,000 bed spaces at the University of Zambia (UNZA), 8,000 at Copperbelt University (CBU) and about 5,000 at the Mulungushi University.

On Sunday, University of Zambia Students Union (UNZASU) saluted government for the hostel rehabilitation exercise at the highest institution of learning in Zambia.

UNZASU Publicity and Information Secretary Thelma Zimba has however urged government to complete the CoJA project which was abandoned in 2008 when Zambia rescinded its decision to host the 2011 All Africa games.

Ms. Zimba also said finishing the project would create more than 600 bed spaces at UNZA where accommodation is a serious challenge.

UNZA has over 6,000 students in campus but there are only 3,000 bed spaces.

  1. The pic is saddening those are signs of over enrollment. You cant even study from that room(pa level) & no importing. Surely we need more universities in the country so that students are wide spread & avoid such congested rooms

    • THE ANSWER TO THIS SITU IS MORE PUBLIC UNIVERSITIES IN THE COUNTRY TO DECONGEST THE ONLY TWO UNIVERSITIES UNZA AND CBU.

  2. Ok, but what of lecturers, books, computers, audio-visual equipment, and all the other things needed for education?

…..not to mention proper schools up to Grade 12 for these kids to even benefit from going to a so-called university.

  3. How can gals import in such situ? They need to stay alone so that married mojor can find a hiding place

  4. From Universities to Hospitals, the situation is the same. The photo above looks like a scene in UTH. Is it not UTH mothers shelter? University? I would not bother to enroll. Why? You end up catching a communicable disease like meningitis instead of graduating with a degree. Where are Health Inspectors?

  5. anyway sorry guys to see u in that condition of accommodation, i hope the government will do it fast than they are saying, all the best be strong and work hard

  6. This situation is a sorry sight. But why do the authorities wait until the situation gets out of hand for them to act? We can surely plan well for future needs instead of this.

    • How can you take people to where you never been?Ukwa,GB,Nsanda! Have they ever been to the University for classes! I don’t mean on import permit

  7. Have u read the latest book from HH? Its entitled” How to become a national president with support from only one province out of ten”. Its a nice piece and a must read. Find it in bookworld manda hill.
