Former republican president Rupiah Banda is this morning expected to appear in the magistrate court in a case in which he has been charged with abuse of authority of office.
Mr. Banda was yesterday arrested and later released on police bond in connection with a Nigerian oil deal.

This was after the former head of state appeared for interrogation before the government joint investigations team at the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) offices.

Mr. Banda, who is being represented by his lawyers Sakwiba Sikota, late former republican vice president George Kunda’s wife Irene and Professor Patrick Mvunga, was only released after providing two working sureties and paying Kr 500, 000 in his own recognisance And his lawyer Sakwiba Sikota says the truth will be the only defense in his clients’ case.

Interrogations in the matter are scheduled to continue on Thursday 4th April, 2013.

  1. All the best shikulu ! Fisanga abaume mukose ! Law temunobe ! Ngawaduma ama half yachalo nivundu.Kukulonga one time.

    • Govt must pursue both criminal and civil actions against high profile pompwes such as RB. Criminal if convicted, will send then to jail and civil to recover what belongs to the people.

Our economy is too small and for RB to steal $11million in less than three years as President is extremely dreadful. How much could have been stolen today had he won the elections?

The money RB and his family helped themselves to could have changed the lives of many but he decided to send so many children to their graves earlier due to his unbridled greed in addition to being a child molester.

Let this be a good start to building a great nation

  2. Iyee, i know i have been so vocal over your issue, i wonder how you are shapping up, am curious, obviously chi Henry chiletukana, elo ngani lilya limbi dont mention names, we all know who?!!!, waiting for his outbusts, Yazanda!
Also just wondering how much bail will cost since you have been very naughty and taking into account that you are a former umutwe wa chalo, katwishi but, charge him more than he stole!

  3. hmmm I hate to see you go through this but if you could have minimised dipping those fat fingers in state coffers you would be somewhere in the states now enjoying but aawe you did otherwise…too bad

    • Banda is a thief! 11 million dollars is a lot of money for this i.d.i.o.t of a former president to just use on buying votes. If found guilty, I would rather he gives the money back to the Zambian people.

    • What threats? You have enlisted Amsterdam who is busy insulting Zambians and our government, issuing political statements instead of concentrating on legal matters like what you have at hand now.

    • $2.5 m to $11 m from last week? Yes it could be due to the very high rate of inflation courtesy of the economic voodooism of Ukwanomics! Anyway this whole case is just rubbish. Its not going anyway.

  4. It is sad that Mr. Banda has been tried through the press and has already been found. Whatever happened to ‘innocent until proven guilty?’ Whether he stole or not, the truth will eventually come out.

  5. Zambian governments always focuses on corruption instead focusing on other important issues since 92! having RB in prision might help some people sleep at night but it wont reduce the price of Milli meal..

  6. Corruption affects normal life and livelihood if you dont know. The maintenance of law and order is part of national governance.Other issues are still being attended to while RB and his tandem of theives are given opportunity to answer and atone or their misconduct

  7. yes they have to pay but i refuse that Zambia’s imagine should pay too because i was hurt to see the news on BBC. according to this site *********In 2009, the Employment and Earnings Inquiry Report published by the CSO estimated that Zambia had 671,246 workers in the formal sector. Of these, 66% were employed in the private sector (442,378 workers), 21% or 139,234 in Central Government, 5% in Local Government and about 8% in parastatal companies..clearly we depend investors, the question is if we keep showing the world that most of our our leaders are corrupt, how we get them to invest..this just makes us look like we still have the mind set Idi Amin, were leaders dont care more about there pockets than their country.

  8. umusebanyafye wekaweka! even the most respected person in the country can abuse office. i hope other leaders will learn from this.
