The couple which dipped hands of their two children in hot water for stealing beans has been committed to the High Court by Luwingu Magistrate Davy Simfukwe following instructions from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

Appearing before Luwingu Magistrate Simfukwe were Lazarus Kasonde 24 and Maureen Chanda 28 of Chilekwa Chisanga Village in Chief Chipalo of Luwingu district in the Northern Province who are facing two counts of murder and grievous bodily harm contrary to the laws of Zambia.

After the baby died in the district hospital the couple was spotted trying to dispose of the late Jane Mukupa in the nearby grave yard and the matter was reported to Zambia police in Luwingu.

The children found their fate after they decided to eat the beans which were meant for supper after severe hunger hit. They searched for food but found a pot of beans hidden in the bedroom under the bed of their parents.

The duo are facing a murder case involving their daughter Jane Mukupa aged 3 who died of severe burns while in count two the couple stand charged with the offence of unlawful wounding or causing grievous bodily harm on Harrison Chanda aged 5 years respectively.

“The matter is coming up for mention, however, we have received the instruction from the DPP’s chambers for committal to the High Court of Zambia for summary trial,” said Prosecutor Oscar Nyembe.

“Pursuant to the certificate for summary trial issued by the DPP and pursuant to powers conferred on me by section 222 of the criminal procedure cord chapter 88 of the laws of Zambia, I accordingly commit both accused persons to the High Court of Zambia. Both the accused person will be informed of their trial date in the next High Court session. Both are remanded in custody,” Mr Simfukwe said.

  1. Worrying. They hide the pot of the beans. where did they go. Drinking. Woman 28 and a man 24. No proper head. Two were drunk. 3 years and 5 years olds.
NGOs please take care of this child and late the two face the law. otherwise the child will grow and murder his parents.

  2. WHAT A FAMILY, KIDS WITH DIFFERENT NAMES, WERE THESE THEIR REAL CHILDREN, THE WOMAN HAS NO HEART, she should be punished

  3. This is terrible, felt like crying, even if these were not my kids, I cannot be that evil to harm them for beans. Oh know this is satanism for real; killing your own over beans?

  4. That is our Bemba cousin for you. They love their beans and would kill for it. They dont call it CHILEMBA for nothing

    • Why do you have to bring in tribe for God’s sake? Such a sad incident can not just be reflected upon without you thinking about TRIBE? When will blog sites start taking responsibility and strike out anything that mentions any TRIBE in negative sense? I don’t know about others, I really find this TRIBE thing nauseating. Where I grew up in Chiliz, CB, we never cared about where a person (or their parent, for that matter) came from. We judged people as they came. We had tanzanians, malawans, mozambicans, lozis, bembas, lambas, tongas and many others and played together, ate from each others homes, with no qualms. But here in this highly rated 21st century cyber communities, I find myself taken back 1013 years. I feel foreign. Can someone stop the train, I want out!

    • Mumba you want out you Bemba thug? Go to Livingstone and jump in the falls…….. You only react when the word Bemba is mentioned when others are being insulted its cool with you. Have a life we are clever also and can read your stupidity guys.

  5. These two are really cruel. Are they the bilogical parents to these children? Husband 24 and the daughter 5 years. Kukwatila mukali bana, these are the results. Cruel Bemba chaps.

  6. Two strange things Boy 24 marries woman 28, and all dull bembas. second: It seems non of the children belongs to the man as they dont bear his surname, conclusion is the kids belong to two different bemba crooks , a Mr Chanda (Father to Harrison chanda 5yrs) and a Mr mukupa(Father to Jane mukupa 3yrs). Harming Kids because of beans?? Its good that hunger is not only in bemba land, but i do see it in all zambian faces. Let the man serve 4 yrs and woman 8yrs why 3yrs plus 5yrs = 8yrs the man serves half cos. it not his blood, he is yet to prove to other bemba women he can produce.

    • THIS ISA MURDER CASE WHERE THEY EVEN WANTED TO BURY THE CHILD. FIRST DEGREE MURDER. HANGS OF COURTS ARE TIED AS THEY SAY BECAUSE THE LAW IS CLEAR” HUNG BY THE NECK UNTIL PRONOUNCED DEAD”. UNLESS THE NEW CONSTITUTION MAY ALLOW THEM LIFE IMPRISONMENT.
BOTH ARE IN FOR IT OVER K2 BEANS

  7. Too sad, less time for children but more time in drinking katubi children are dying with hunger, just jail them. Different surnames in Bemba land its common but all from the bio-father.
