A mob of angry residents in Mufulira yesterday attacked a Tanzanian truck driver, Geoffrey Zowa, 28, for allegedly killing two 13-year-old female pedestrians after the vehicle he was driving ran over them.

According to a statement issued in Lusaka today by Police Deputy Public Relations Officer, Charity Chanda, the two teens have been identified as Sampa Chungu and Hadassa Pola of Mwebupya flats and Kantanshi Township respectively.

Ms Chanda said Sampa died on the spot while Haddassa was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.

The accident happened around 16:30 hours between Buntungwa and Freedom way in Mufulira after the driver of the Scania truck Reg No. T924 BYA and T150 BZB failed to keep to his lane and went to hit the two girls who were standing by the road side.

The driver sustained injuries as a result of the beating by the residents and is admitted to Ronald Ross hospital.

The bodies of the deceased are lying in Ronald Ross and Malcom Watson Hospital Mortuaries.

Ms Chanda has since appealed to members of the public not to take the law into their own hands but hand over suspects to the police.

In a related development, a passenger, only identified as Jonathan, aged between 28 and 30 years old, died on the spot after a Mercedes truck, Reg No AAA 5714, loaded with logs, ran over him.

The accident happened when the driver, Kelvin Gongwe lost control of the vehicle and went off the road where the trailer fell off and ran over the deceased.

The accident happened around 19:40 hours along Kalengwa Road near Kacheleketa area in Kalulushi.

Police Deputy public Relations Officer, Charity Chanda, affirmed that the driver is currently on the run and police have since launched a manhunt for him to bring him to book.

She said the body of the deceased is lying in Kalulushi Government Clinic awaiting postmortem.

  1. You have thick-sponged-hearten Sata for a leader, he will never give speech, mourn and worse of all do nothing about all these deaths.

    • What is wrong with you? These are two tragic accidents that have resulted in the loss of life and all you can do is make your usual annoying political comments. RIP

  2. Why descend on him? 2 lives have been lost, you want to make it three?

    Leave the man alone.

    Thanks

    • I have never seen a Tanzanian truck that sticks to its lane. They are the most dangerous drivers I have ever seen.
Mushota they should have finished him off. Bar them from driving in Zambia

  3. Nostradumus

It is wise to keep quiet when you have nothing tangible to utter. Let those with wisdom make comments, instead churning out BS!!

  4. The ministry of education in conjuction with RTSA must introduce road safety in schools so that school children knows which side of the road they must walk on even cylists are always seen riding there bicycles on the wrong side of the road. Also speed hamps should be constructed on all township roads that are being tarred before many lives are lost.

  5. Some Zambian and Tanzanian truck drivers are really dangerous. They drive too fast, overtake anywhere/how were required sometimes may not slow down. They are so unpredictable and unsafe so much so that its far better when they are way in front or way behind you. Zambian trucks the majority of which may be overloaded or mechanically unsafe must clearly be avoided what with their under age excited drivers. If it is the big buses (marcopolo and the like) I say no more

  6. THE REG No FOR THE KALULUSHI TRUCK TELLS THE TRUCK IS ANCIENT. IT MUST HAVE BEEN REGISTERED IN THE 70s OR EARLY 1980s.
THESE TIMBER HAULAGE TRUCKS HAVE CLAIMED A LOT OF LIVES ON THE COPPERBELT. SURPRISINGLY MOST OF THEM ARE SO OLD AND USUALLY OPERATE IN THE NIGHT WITHOUT REFLECTORS SOMETIMES NO LIGHTS. THEY ARE USUALLY OWNED BY POLICE MEN AND BUSINESS MEN.

  7. Does it mean the president has to give a speech on each and every death that happens in the country? Let us be serious please. And kindly don’t reduce the loss of lives to foolish politicking.
