A youth organization has observed that if the problem of youth unemployment is not addressed, there will be no hope of a prosperous future for them in the country.
Youth in Action for Sustainable Development (YASD) Chief Executive Officer, Joseph Chansa, said most challenges being faced by youths in the country are due to high levels of unemployment.
Speaking during the launch of the YASD- Lafarge Green and Clean campaign in Chilanga District yesterday, Mr Chansa stated that the levels of youth unemployment in the country are distressing, saying it has resulted in youths engaging themselves in negative vices such as crime and drug abuse.
He said these vices can only be curbed when the problem of youth unemployment is solved.
Mr Chansa said the Green and Clean Campaign is aimed at involving local communities to effectively take care of the environment.
And speaking when she represented Chilanga District Commissioner, District Education Board Secretary, Ruth Phiri, said the Patriotic Front (PF)’s pro-poor developmental agenda is already bearing fruit.
Mrs Phiri said government has created a conducive environment for youth innovation in various sectors of the economy.
And Lafarge Corporate Affairs Director, Eugene Chungu, said Lafarge will support any initiative aimed at protecting the environment.

survival of the fittest.
Hopelessness may lead to unemployment. Young people need to understand that they cannot be dependents just because they don’t have a job, they have to earn a living somehow.
were do you think the youth should go. There must be a gvt to avail something. Look what is happening on the mines, almost all employees are foreigners and doing what Zambian youths can do. The PF is issuing work permits to these economical refugees every day. Now in such a situation what can the youth do. all shops and market stands are filled with foreigners. the Gvt must be pro active to create an enabling environment for its youth.
Zambians scoff at blue collar jobs. Every type of job must be respected. I have read on this blog countless posts ridiculing Zambians in diaspora who are Nurse’s Aids, house keepers or nannies, etc.
In developed countries jobs in sanitation are very highly respected, but in Zambia you are a kangungulu or kadunga mafi!
Earning a living doesn’t mean an office job or a stall at the market.
@nubian
you are living in a working society…. unlike zambia, zambia is a disfuntional society,,,hopelessnes, joblessnes, desperation, poverty, disease,, political lies/booza from everyone PF, MMD, UPND,, everybody!!!,,,plus all other ills all in one pot!!!
youth dont need to depend on anyone but there should be some structural socio economic support from somewhere,, government maybe …but there is nothing….
there are NO play parks in the country, NO good libraries,, NO public gardens,,,so survive is the only way out,,, if you cant, hopelessnes is for you!!!
@Nubian.
I am a Zambian and I ridicule Zambians in the diaspora who have made the biggest sacrifice ever (leaving home) to be a Nurse’s Aid, Nanny or House Keeper.
Respect to those that work in these jobs – only for a while, but are working their way to bigger and better.
I once thought a woman would make a better leader. I forgot that women are easily manupulated by sata-n
Youth unemployment could be addressed through a youth fund which can assist in the support and mentor of various entrepreneurial projects. The fact is, instead of waiting to create formal employment for the youth, doors can be opened through entrepreneurships, which would make the youths “SELF-EMPLOYED”. Unlike street vending, small business establishments in the manufacturing, agriculture, hospitality, etc industries is much more lucrative and sustainable. Hard-work (from owner) and support (from mentors and funders) can help stimulate Zambia’s economic growth. Now, only a few Zambian youth are entrepreneurs in above-mentioned industries. It is mostly dominated by foreigners (beneficiaries)! Big business players (companies) operating in Zambia should offer mentorships to youths.
Iye akatemba aka kuti waseka kwati nafiwama mwe! Atleast he’s not begging or stealing from nobody there is hope there! If only our Economy would improve, if only both government and private entities would creat jobs, if only peoples altitude would change positively, there would be hope for everyone and this back and forth talk would cease, if only wishes were horses!
Unemployment may lead to youth uprising and it could be in the most unpleasant way. It is only government that can create an enabling environment for youth to engage in some form of livelihood then the private sector would step in filling opportunities arising
youth must come together. we will not got job for the next 10years since the govt have increased the retirement age from 55 to 65. so no will retire in the next 10 years. PF is for old pipo not youth. youth are a just political thugs.
