We would like to register our deepest concern over the happenings at the copper belt University.
In particular we urge the management of Copperbelt University to find a short term and long term solution to the acute accommodation crisis at the institution.
Banning squatting and subsequent suspending of students will not in any way help mitigate the challenges currently obtaining at Copper belt University.
The cries by the students at the Copperbelt University for the administration to address their accommodation woes should be given the attention it deserves.
Many of the students cannot afford private accommodation( boarding houses) and if management at CBU insists on their decision it will lead to many students to discontinue their studies and add to the pool of deprived youths.
Education is the cornerstone for development and suspension of the Student leaders who are merely speaking for the majority of students facing accommodation limbo’s will not in any way solve the accommodation woes. We therefore demand that the student leaders be re-instated with immediate effect.
Secondly, we urge the PF government to prioritize education and allocate funds to support the educational sector unlike now where their priority is inducing costly by-elections, illegally constructing the retirement house for President Micheal Sata and allocating funds to the office of the first lady that is none existent amongst others.
Not so long ago they were similar protests by students from the Evelyn Hone College pressing for a more conducive learning environment . All these protest are a manifestation of the PF’s wrong priorities.
We once again would like to remind the PF that Education be prioritized and that building retirement houses before time, awarding themselves (The Executive) hefty salaries is not what the people put them in office for. We urge the government to serve the people and not serve their personal interest.
Also caution those students to stop behaving as though they have never been inside a classroom. what is so difficult with protesting peacefully without breaking a windshield of an innocent person’s vehicle?
He is ready to be the next president, I had my doubts but they are all washed away
Thanks
everyone can be president. even idi amin was one!
Agreed my brother, let the students protest but not against innocent members of the public. I have watched student protests in developed countries esp in the UK. They never attack innocent people and property and as a result, draw symphathy from both the public and the police.
Students, use intellect. You are supposed to be of above average IQ, that is how you find yourselves at University/college. Directing your anger/frustration at your paymasters (tax payers), parents, sisters and brothers who have nothing to do with your administration and govt, makes us think you are exhibiting the effects/impact of Dementia. Yes, coz, you are behaving like a person who “runs to the stream/river to tear up your fishing nets just because you have been stung by wasps in the bush” (Lozi proverb).
Zungulila is right. Students embarrass people like HH and others who know what it is to be a student from a poor family/distance and having no support from the adminstration and govt to assist you manage.
Short-term Solution: CBU Mgt must lease Prefab Hostels on-site whilst mobilizing finances for longterm Permanent structure construction. Boarding houses outside campus are not feasible if the institution is to maintain its prestige and ensure ethical behaviour of its students.
Calculate the students accomodation fees and ensure that they cover the leasing of Prefab Hostels.
I’ve told you what to do, what are you still waiting for???
Spot on HH. PF government has plan. At Mwanawasa provided the plan and we saw the construction of hundred hostels for students.
VIV HH. You are man of the moment. Ubufi …tooooooooo……much…much
HH have you provided accoumondation for your animmals
@ek, yes he has. Next question please.
@2 chanda moono, if HH is your man of the moment, then you ve no man. Talking about bufi…what about HH’s zambeef bufi.
Better start looking for a new man of the moment.
yangu wemupamba ulakula!! ati immediately, did he sleep in nkwazi house?
He doesnt drink like you and Edgar Lungu
ok
No politcal mileage at ths..adress those poor students misbehavng.Aftral they re funde ti riot & cause unwaranted confusion. And the target re poor stuents with no suport frm parents bt stupidly agree to go on rampage. Why Stop this behaviour its bad fr students and whoever is fundng them fr mischief conduct.
Dada, if at all you have been to univ/tcollege you would know that no one funds students to riot. KK used to say the same thing in our time as students in the 1980s.
Students resort to protesting when both the admin and govt turns a deaf ear to their grievances and end up protesting to get attent. What would you do if you were from Kasama and had no accomodation and no money to pay fellow students to “rent” a corner of their room coz the little money on you was for food while awaiting student allowance whose pay date was unknown & the college admin responded with threats? Dada, if you had been to university/college, surely you would have noticed the problems your fellow unfortunate students went through unless you did’nt care. What would happen if Dada became a college adminstrator?
You are right but lets find a solution, educate the students about riots and put sense in their poor heads not to repeat this unhuman behavior. protect them also from losing out of the higher school of education to avoid a poor educated Zambia.
Hard luck HH, you try to gain political mileage on wrong things. If you are a parent enough you should condemn in strongest terms students’ behaviour of damaging property. I am surprised that on your list of things you say PF has prioritized you ve left out Roads, Health Centres, Construction of new schools, colleges and universities, increasing of workers salaries, new Districts and the list goes on. Wait until 2015 and people will be choking with envy.
HH is desparate 2 go to plot 1. Why don’t you first contest as a member of parliament? Money won’t make you win presidential election in 2016.
the reason is simple, we know of a person who has been through all stages of political career and he is not delivering. give chance to outsiders like HH and Chipimo who can see beyond politicking as is the case currently.
yaba! This ka pf infested site, they wil never get sense from whoever is not from pf.all they know is to suck the fluids from the urine bag of saaataaa.whats wrong with HH’s speech anyway?
If you are used to unethical ZWD which only tolerates insults, you should go hang yourself. Lusaka times isn’t biased and accommodates all.
Go back to ZWD where you swim in your own insults.
Thanks!
Nashinikisha HH tawakwata amano kuti wasumunisha nomwana obe ukucita ubuule.Pantu cili kumunobe nganiwe mulekula mumano.
They are not the first ones to be expelled. Discipline is of paramount importance no n’gombe thinking and behavour here
H.H is right
ati PF has brought hunger in our homes lol! so u want PF to be delivering food on yo door steps? work hard bane! even th bible doesn’t support laziness, if u r nt employed u cn do yo own things e.g farming. th problem is evryone wants to b in an office ala tafyakacitike!!
@ ailing dictator, read your opinion several time & if it makes any logical, then HH will make it!!
our universities should be centers of academic and moral discipline. i get worried that the students at our highest learning institutions sometimes behave like they have exchanged their brains with wild animals. if hh wants to gain political mileage from the misconduct of the students, then he’s not even fit to be president. those student leaders are but a nuisance who promote indiscipline among their fellow students. they deserve condemnation from every straight thinking zambian. i have no problem with protesting but the manner of doing it. for example, why destroy property which doesn’t belong to you? why inconvenience innocent people who have nothing to do with your issues? why destroy property which you know you will have to use again? so ba hh muleikalafye. tondolo musuma
Having passed through CBU, I know what the students are going through…
Accommodation at CBU is a BIG PROBLEM, but banning squatting with no or poor alternatives is not the solution! Squatting could be phased out gradually whilst constructing more hostels, which could be done through lease agreements with interested investors. CBU management SEEM and CLAIM to be intellectuals but their handling of delicate issues leave much to be desired.
The damaging of property by students is regrettable, but what is equally regrettable is their expulsion. Between the 2 (evils?) is what they call common ground. Let it be found.
For example, can this be mitigated by suspending them for a year? Can those that were proven to have damaged property be made to pay for it? That’s management.
There is lack of planning at this Campus. Why should they increase the number of schools without increasing the hostels? In 1991 there were only about 2,000 students at CBU. I had a single room in 3rd year – sr. Student. Students are paying a lot of money for less service. The suspension remind me of our then COBUSU President Kenny Bungwe Mweemba who spent about 7years for a 5year course
Right on man strategic planning required.
HH TAKWATA AMANO thats why he will never rule BEMBAS because zambia is bemba and that is the fact.when u oppose bukala bobe.
awe naimwe bufi ubu. landeniko fimbi nangu mulekefye.
You sound to be very illiterate. We are talking about education but are talking of your useless tribal language. Talk sense and we will listen to you. period.
@ Buaer, ulichipuba? Chaps like you are not even Bemba… check Urself Bwana… Useful Iiot..
@Bauer
You are an embarassment to me, a fully fledged Mubemba Nkonko. No one is interested in your delusions of grandeur just because you happen to be Bemba.
Now fcuk off back to the sewer you climbed out of and leave worthy Bembas to comment intelligently on this blog.
You’ll be better able to see if you scrape off the faeces sticking your eyelids together. I.d.i.o.t.
this is good to hear ..the President is right..no need to expel the students..
Sense! But ba LT comm skills. I can see a lot of direct speech by HH but there’s not even a single quotation marks in your article.
@ bauer, apapena waluba (here, you are wrong)! First of all, Sata does not rule the Bembas but the Zambian. Besides, Bemba is not Zambia! Plz don’t be like the majority of the Tongas! Wasebanya mwandi (u have disgusted/disappointe me)!
@Bauer If you think zambia is for bembas then you are like your father ukwa, who is the father of lies, the father of kaponyas.
@ Mwaba, the president of Zambia is the Father of all Zambians. Kaponyas are Zambians. Therefore, Mwaba, you are correct to say Ukwa is the Father of Kaponyas. But you are absolutely wrong to say Ukwa is the father of lies. In my opinion, it did not matter what PF compaigned for, but I wanted a change & I used my vote wisely. HH didn’t want to work with PF due to his selfisf motives.
U bembas go back to work u’re bussy yaping this time of the day dont follow haleisa haleisa too much he ‘ve already done his part thats y he entered politics,do you see HH suffering soon? of coz then tolking of school u dont even knw anything abt it so jst continue talking yo bemba coz u’re not even civalised thanks. copara swag
@Pulamba
The only worthy answer to your tribalistic clap trap is Shut Up.
If PF can allow people to leave the markets built by the previous government only let them trade on the streets of every town as there is no law in this country; why should you then victimize the young people who are merely seeking education. All young people should now start registering as voters to make that decision in 2016; these old politician can not help our future but only HH. HH for 2016 and beyond.
indeed…………….hahahaha
Am begging to love HH!
This is more like it Mr President. This what i expected from you after the loss of the elections to Mr Sata in 2011 i.e talking on behalf of the people. You’re now winning my confidence.
Preach Opposition, Preach!
Demagoguing, as usual. Pf found that which your like minded mmd left. ls it pf dat told de management 2 over enrol?Actually pf is doing something about it that will never allow such in long term. That’s by building more universities.BLIND LEADER!
@Buer is not even bemba 4 there no Bemba that think like a demon. Even u who’ve fallen into what he said u are shallow minded. No matter hw u hate dem dey’ll still remain Zedians. Dat problem at CBU can’t b solved with less than 2 yrs.Bt pf is track.
