Energy Minister Christopher Yaluma has disclosed that government through the Energy Regulation Board (ERB) approved the proposal by ZESCO to increase electricity tariffs.

Early this year ZESCO had proposed to have its electricity tariffs increased by an average of 26% in order to enable the power utility firm to meet various operational costs, high inflation and increased demand for electricity in the country.

Speaking in an interview with qfm news, Mr. Yaluma has however disclosed that the approved electricity tariffs are below the 26% that ZESCO proposed.

Mr. Yaluma, who could not disclose the exact percentage of the electricity tariffs that have been approved, said that the ERB will soon announce the approved increased ZESCO electricity tariffs.

    • This is simply unacceptable and must not be allowed to stand. we the people can come together and stop this daylight robbery.

ZESCO services are mediocre and don’t warrant this hike. one way of mitigating costs is to reduce the top heavy management at ZESCO and their dubious donations to PF.

ZESCO generates so much profits and this latest hike is totally unjustifiable.

Let the people pour out onto the streets to protest and have this reversed. it can be done and it must be done!!

No wonder the colour black on our flag now stands for load shedding

    • ‘muzanya’ or ‘tizanya’? if you are comfortable, then why worry? you sound like a bitter UPND cadre….back to the topic at hand, if it makes business sense then go for it ZESCO….

    • hahaha, dumb and dumber rolled into one! Is it even possible you are being sarcastic Ubupuba whatever? Am giving you a life-line here homes, lets not give Spuds the satisfaction of being right about you…..darn, too late, just saw your email to Santa where you listed how good you were all year…..

    • dude, how many times have they hiked tarrifs for the very same reasons and nothing has happened? wat makes u think things will change now? The PF is broke and so pilfering money through Zesco is the only way to sustain themselves. Do not be naive to think that these tarriffs are to improve Zesco, am assuming you are old enough to know this.

  1. The finance minister still maintains that there will be wage freeze in the next two years……..on the other hand prizes for commodities are going up.e.g.Cement in Mansa, Kasama is now K95 and now Electricity…

The increase in electricity tariffs means increase in production of goods and services, meaning that the salary increase experienced by civil servants will be useless…………………….Ndeloleshafye as 2016 approaches.

PF government campaigned on the slogan MORE JOBS but there will be job freeze in the next two years except for replacements

    • Exactly my thoughts. Govt wants to keep salaries stagnant and youths unemployed for 2 years while prices of water, fuel, electricity, food continue going up daily. As I have said time and again, it takes a Bemba President to destroy the country.

  2. This will promote deforestation and disruption of natural habitat. There is no logic of increasing tariffs by 26 % when we well only given a 4% rise.

  3. Increase their salaries: they become happy and sing praises for you. Little did they know that you will soon make their cost of living a little more expensive so that the increment you gave them will be spent on the increased cost of living. In the end, they are back to square 1, and you have succeeded in doing a “donchi kubeba” on them!!!!

  4. Considering mines and other big industries consuming a lot of electricity, a normal gvt can’t be overloading its citizens with hikes when the power suplly is not even consistent. This gvt means no good!

  5. I saw it coming! Everything now will be on the increasing! Trying to Catch Up With Increased Salaries! Such is Life! Start thinking of other alternative sources of power!

  6. Is there a way of passing a vote of no confidence against this Govt. PF is doing the exact opposite of what they said they will do when they form Govt.. Now the cost of production and doing business will go up translating in increased prices for goods and service thereby reducing the purchasing power of our money.
The question i always have is, where does ZESCO take all the money they collect. Because not too long ago money from the Euro bond (as absurd as it was) was given to ZESCO for repairs.
How can an economically viable institution like ZESCO turn into a white elephant?
Is ZESCO still been used to fund political activities?

  7. When removing fuel subsidies, they said it’s the rich who were benefiting from the fuel subsidies because the poor people do not have cars.
When they removed maize consumption subsidies, they said its the millers who were benefiting because the poor people do not have money to buy mealie meal. They are used to staying with hunger.
When they removed fertiliser subsidies, they said it’s the commercial farmers who were benefiting. The poor do not use fertilisers for their crops.
Now they are hiking electricity because the poor do not use electricity. It’s the rich town dwellers who benefit.
    What a pro poor government!!!

  8. By the time we wake up zambia will be a desert. You give Zesco the euro bond which will be paid by the people on the other hand you hike tariffs

  9. Sheeeeeeeeee, donchi kubeba!!! where is the Eurobond? Mweba vota PF mwailetelela, tulefwa ku nsala uno mwaka, inshonkonono nasho tapali.ifinkubala nafidula.

  10. Total confusion. In the passed years it was being campaigned that there will be less tax, the more money in the pockets. I want to agree with those who are saying there is a lot of money paid to ZESCO employees and unnecessary allowances for almost same output. This has resulted into high tariffs and the affected is a common man. Zambians where are we going?

  11. DONCHI. MULEMWISHIBA SATAn. 2015 HE WILL GIVE YOU AN INCREMENT AND A FEW JOBS. THAT WILL BE THE BEGINING OF PF CAMPAIGN AND YOU WILL START JUMPING LIKE RATS ANDMONKEYS ATI MORE JOBS AND MONEY IN YOUR POCKETS. READ IN BETWEEN THE LINE IF YOU WANT TO KNOW THIS SERPENT CALLED SATANA. THIS IS A GIMMICK. OPEN YOUR EYES AND START THINKING.

  12. THIS GOVT IS A TOTAL MESS PEOPLE,PLEASE LETS VOTE IT OUT COME 2016.NOTHING IS GOOD IN THIS GOVT EVEN RB’S WAS FAR MUCH BETTER NOT THESE FAILURES.AND IF WE ARE NOT CAREFUL BY THE TIME THESE GUYS ARE OUT OF GOVT THEN THIS COUNTRY WILL BE 20YEARS BEHIND.MARK MY WORDS.

  13. What is wrong with our government? wage freeze= zesco increase in tariffs= tax exemptions for copper mines? when are our people every going to start living as opposed to surviving? we are tired of being in the survival mode, can we please start living for once? Already Zesco is too much for our under paid civil servants. Lord have mercy…!

  14. It’s sad that most Zambians who claim ,to be very educated are actually not and least understand economics of the current times. One thing I know is some Zambians are so docile, that they choose to critise their own govt without any valid reason. All they want is be heard irrespective of what they say. ‘ kadansa type’. Here in the UK energy tariffs have being increased and the media is being controlled by govt. Most critics of PF govt live outside Zambia, least understand what is obtaining on the ground. Here is a simple question to you pf govt critics. Where were you when Zambians voted for Sata? If you are more learned and would lead the country to prosperity, why didn’t you stand for presidency? Stop exposing your rural idiocy on this fora. Your small hh stood three times and…

  15. you complain about the hike and yet you pay DSTV more than k400 per month. you will dance one day when zesco employees will go on strike. when the govt removed the subsides there was no public hearing, I welcome the increment. I received 200% salary increment and I can afford. dream on!

  16. I Love all these hikes! This is what the unappreciating people of zambia wanted! Change has come our way just that its leading us to hell. Tiye Pf tibalangize why banativotela! Cheat us even more. I love this government … Zambians learn to say thank you
