We wish to state that we Nkoyas are not impressed with the conduct of the Barotse activists who have continued to propagate that they are still the majority in Western province and for continuing to be separated from the rest of Zambia.
We Nkoyas have observed that Lozis believe they are the sole owners of Western province, hence the need of wanting to divide the country into two states.
Nkoyas will not allow Lozis to divide or break away from the rest of Zambia. We have noted that Lozis use the agreement whenever they are in poverty and when they want jobs in government. We wish to state and reiterate that the agreement was made in bad faith and therefore, it has no meaning in the lives of the Nkoyas.
It is undemocratic and evil agreement because it was designed to silence indigenous ethnic groupings who are the real owners of the province. The agreement was done to benefit the Lozis who connived with colonial masters instead of the all province.
Before 1964, there were other failed treaties and agreements which were done in bad faith in a bid to silence other ethnic groupings in the province. We do not agree to all the arrangements the Lozis want to be put in place in their favour. We wonder why government keeps treating them like ‘eggs’ and when they are perpetrators of violence in the country.
Treating them with ‘kid-groove’ makes them feel superior. The Lozis are given a lot of attention when it comes to development in Mongu and yet they cannot appreciate government’s efforts. We can assure government that there is no guarantee that the Barotse activists and the Lozis as a whole will respect any government of the day unless they are caged.
It was manifested by the 54 activists when they were released that they are not Zambians and could not appreciate the fact that they were forgiven because treason was a very gravy offence.
They want to hold serving governments of the day at ransom so that government gives more Lozis jobs but they will not succeed as people in the province are busy with their own businesses. They do not care about the barotse.
Lozis today want to live with the legacy of their forefathers who used to eat by using defective documents for selfish reasons. We want to remind the Lozis that what they are propagating for is also in bad taste to people who have invested in the province and country at large because they are not happy.
They should accept the situation as it is and stop contemplating for the secession.
We also urge political leaders, Non Governmental Organisations particularly in Lusaka and people in the diaspora who are pushing and supporting the Lozis to secede to stop because they do not understand the issue at hand and before they are exposed.
Although, people are pushing for secession, it is not in the constitution. Government should take serious measures to restrain them.

i think the nkoyas are a small tribe of about 100,000 based in around Kaoma, before u reach Mongu. They came from Congo and asked for permission to settle in Barotseland and were allocated to settle in Koama by the then Litunga. That’s what I know.

@Mopao Mokonzi, You have a very good question. The answer is that Nkoyas are Lozis. When the Lozis migrated from Congo, they settled around Lukulu and parts of Angola. When the son to Mbuyu wa Mwambwa found grazing lands in Mongu, Kalabo and senanga, he asked those who had remaind to join him there. Some of the remaind in Lukulu.
Those who remaind in Lukulu were captured by the Kaondes and became their slaves. The Lozis went to rescue their brothers from the Kaondes but they were defeated in the first war. After some time the Luvales and the Mbundas who ran away from the mambari slave traders joined the Lozis, another rescue effort was embarked on, the Kaondes tried to use the same tricks they used in the first war, The lozi,s wanted to go back but the Luvales and Mbundas advised …..
The lozi,s wanted to go back but the Luvales and Mbundas advised them not to do that. They fought the Kaondes until the Slaves (Nkoyas) were released. When they reached Mongu, the Nkoyas could not bare with the sand as there was no land for farming. So they asked the Litunga to let them settle in Kaoma (around 1754). It should be noted that this Litunga was under pressure from the Mambari to sell the Luvale, Mbunda and Nkoyas. His response was that: (in Luyana) “Mu ule ambwa, mwi ula anu.” English “You go and buy dogs, you can not buy human beings”. So he protected them and they nicknamed him Mulambwa. He gave them Kaoma to practice their traditions and a Senior Chief at Naliele to help repel the Kaondes if they try and attack the Nkoyas in Kaoma. Nkoyas are Lozi. Bakaushinda, bihii?
A Lozi is every one who is settled in Bartseland. There about 30 tribes who are called Lozis, Nkoyas included. am a mixture of Kwangwa and Luyana.
The Issue of those who claim to be Nkoyas and not Lozi is like that of Israel and Palastine. The Israelis have history on their side, including the Bible, but the Palestinians have nothing, its just claims, they don’t have written proof. The Lozis have written proof but the Nkoyas have nothing, same with the Zambian government. We have been learning European history and ignoring our own.

The Nkoya Vs the rest debate in Barotseland can only be settled by a referendum. Only the referendum will assure us as to who are numerically superior – the Nkoyas or the rest of those who make the Lozi grouping. Many in Barotseland are of mixed descent, especially the Luyi, Nkoya and Mbunda mix (all referred to as Lozi). I doubt that Nkoya (and that is Kankoya full) can marshal the numbers required to defeat the rest in a referendum,

The Lozi`s never ruled the Lambas, there are no facts to that effect. The Litungu when he showed the colonialist his boundary he was not specific, but the British took advantage of this to include Lamba land because of the minerals it had. The British are known for such mischief, for example the issue of Falkland Islands!

When it boils down to only two groups or tribes as in this case, chances of escalation and deterioration into violence are extremely high. We have to tread very carefully, and be mindful of every single word uttered as this situation could only be compared to dry tinder on a hot summer and any spark could lead to uncontrollable wild fires.
