University Teaching Hospital (UTH)

University Teaching Hospital (UTH) Public Relations Officer, Mwenya Mulenga has revealed that  K66.7 million has been put aside for the modernization of the UTH.

Mr. Mulenga, says thirty three million kwacha has been put aside for the demolition of the Filter clinic, twenty two million kwacha for the rehabilitation of the road network within the institution while eleven point seven million is for the construction of a four hundred capacity car park.

Mr. Mulenga has told QFM News in an interview that the rehabilitation of the road infrastructure will commence on the 20th January.

Mr. Mulenga says all is set for the works and that the filter clinic will be demolished and moved next to casualty department.

He explains that the parking space for vehicles at UTH has been a nightmare and that it is for this reason that management saw it fit to construct a two storey car park where people can conveniently park their vehicles.

  1. We have no priorities in Zambia. Kenya has built a new terminal building the Airport handles 5m+ passengers cost 110$m Kk airport handles 1m passengers per year GRZ is building a terminal cost 360$m this is madness that kind of money should be spent on UTH why are we so wasteful as a Nation?

    • And you think the airport will ba handling the same number for the next 50 years? Government is foward looking on the airport project and should be supported.

    • The modernization process must go beyond what has been mentioned in this story to include modern equipment and patient handling and processing.

Going to UTH in its current state is more, one is more likely to acquire a super bug like MRSA, or C. diff because of the decayed nature of the hospital

    • Rashid , to put your statement into context and differently, OR Tambo was refurbished at twice the amount they want to spend on KK airport. Does that mean that we will have half the facility at KK airport.

  2. GOVERNMENT AT WORK?

    UNIVERSITIES!
    STADIUMS!
    NEW AIRPORTS!
    TRADES TRAINING SCHOOLS!
    PRE – PRIMARY SCHOOLS!
    NEW CLINICS!
    NEW ROADS!
    TARRED ROADS
    NEW DUAL CARRIAGE WAYS!
    NEW BRIDGES?
    URBAN ROAD UPGRADES
    ETC.

    SUBSIDY MONEY WELL CHANNELED….

    • @kingfisher ,,drive to Livingstone you unappreciative cadres see how much road network, clinic renovations, street lighting projects, three story market place the first in Zambia the first big intercity bus terminus all these projects costing millions,PF Welldone …forgive the cadres.

    • Development is not roads and buildings. Development is what happens the brings improved GDP and GNP. If you borrow money to build a flush toilet are you developed? No! Development is when you use the flush toilet properly and avoid acquiring cholera. How many quality lecturers have been recruited? Look at graduates that cannot even speak like they’ve been educated.

  3. @rashid

THERE IS A BIG DIFFERENCE BETWEEN UPGRADING AN EXISTING AIRPORT TERMINAL AND BUILDING (STARTING FROM THE SCRATCH) A NEW AIRPORT.

MODERNIZATION DOES DO NOT COME CHEAP WHICHEVER WAY YOU LOOK AT IT. THIS GRZ IS ON TRACK. JEALOUSY ASIDE…

PLEASE GAUGE ITS PERFORMANCE WHEN THE VOTES ARE COUNTED IN 2016.

    • when you say on track you must be referring to a 20-25 year old master plan that they are rolling out. As it is BAMUMBWE have no plan at all.

  4. Imwe ba bwana rashid, kk airport plans are ok. uth plans are ok. money is there and more could be spent on uth. what we should be telling this pf is to stop wasting money on useless bi elections and use the money to mdernize uth more.

    • @Mama Rashid
Where is the money? Last time I counted, Zambia was over $3b in debt and Chikwanda has added more from Europe and China. Don’t continue to think that all is well in Zambia and wake up to reality

    • @mama rasid congratulation for ur objective blogging,if the opposition stop being childish in parliament there will be no need for numbers currently numbers are required for approval of developmental projects…

  5. @Rashid

Kenya – The new terminal dubbed the “Greenfield Terminal” with a capacity of 20 million passengers was held on December 3, 2013. It is set to be the single largest terminal in Africa and is to be completed in 2016.
The estimated cost of 55 billion Kenyan shillings (US$ 654m AND NOT $110m as you quoted).

    Kenyan embassy

    • Thank you Zambians have issues with numbers and will twist them to make their point valid…correctional blogging required urgently…

  6. The priorities of this government are shocking. The we do not have the basic -we have no stationary,no gloves, patients have no linen,we jump over patients when doing rounds, we have no canulas,IV fluids, bandages, swabs, antiseptics, we use can barely afford first generation drugs (btw most countries on on 4 or 5 th generation drugs). The threatres ran out of spirit and iodine a necessity in preparation of the skin before operations – yes your relatives are at higher risk of infections when we operate on them, the Casualty wards stink, and are dirty and today all you can tell us is you are going to modernise UTH by spending half the money building a car park and improve road network? Seriously?

  7. It’s also a good move. But we need lots of Equipment,e.g it’s a shame that as a country we depend on other countries to do DNA tests.

    • Already speaking to china over equipment, bt DNA may not be priority, other equipment are more urgent, health PS should brief Zambians on how much govt spents on renovation UTH, some opp cadre bloggers are misleading Zambians.

  8. this is total nonsense.where are your priorities.look at the state of the wards, medical equipment, the general filthy of each and every part of UTH.have you mulenga been to the low cost filter clinic or the labour ward honestly can you start spending monies on the roads and car park for a hospital whose core structure is in such a state of disrepair.how many of the ordinary zambians who visit UTH in large numbers everyday want to use your car park.i think the entire management ought to be fire at UTH.you people have you priorities crossed and you should not be managers for any institution anywhere in the world.

  9. I was refering to unit 4. An addition to the existing terminal building, Unit 4, is under construction at a cost of 9.4 billion Kenyan shillings (US $111.8 million) and is slated to open in 2013. The new unit will have a capacity of 2.5 million passengers annually and will include 37,500 square metres (404,000 sq ft) of floor space and 1,500 parking spaces.[14]

In November 2012, KAA announced that Units 1, 2, and 3 would be renovated at a cost of 7.9 billion Kenyan shillings (US $94 million). The renovations would start after Unit 4 had begun operations[14] and add an additional level to Units 1, 2, and 3 to separate arriving and departing passengers.[15] It is unclear, however, if these renovations will occur on the previously announced timetable because the 2013 fire massively…

    • @Rashid:

Doesn’t what you have just said negates your first comment? You are talking about additions and renovations to already existing infrastructure and comparing that to what the Zambian government is trying to do at KK International.

At KK it is going to be a brand new International + Executive terminal, with renovations to the old one to accommodate local flights only. In addition, expansions/improvements to the overall airport infrastructure to be able to handle more flights and passengers. Things like new radar system, dispatch towers, runway lighting/navigation, etc—you know, stuff Siliya/MMD failed to do.

Be fair, lets not compare renovations/additions to building a whole new world class terminal. By the way, who said UTH can’t get more funding next year?

  11. @rashid

MY HOPE IS THAT I AM NOT COMMUNICATING TO A BIASED PARTY CADRE.WE NEED INDEPENDENT THOUGHT OF OPINION, HERE

YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT AN UPGRADE OF OR EXTENSION TO AN EXISTING TERMINAL BY A COUNTRY WITH A NATIONAL AIRLINE.

I AM TAKING ABOUT CONSTRUCTION OF A NEW AIRPORT BY A GOVERNMENT WHICH DOES NOT EVEN HAVE AN AIRLINE.

DONT YOU THINK YOUR GOVERNMENT, AN UPSTART AS IT MAY BE IN OUR REGION IS MAKING PROGRESS IN UPGRADING NATIONAL INFRASTRUCTURE AFTER YEARS OF NEGLECT?

HAVE YOU BEEN TO KENYATTA OR JOHANNESBURG AIRPORTS? SEEN ROADS IN SOUTH AFRICA? BOTSWANA? NAMIBIA? WHERE HAS ZAMBIA BEEN? 50YEARS ON!

  12. Take that money to villages as well. They have never seen such amounts you sink into Lusaka. No clinics since independence there. Greed has always blocked villagers getting good medical help, they remain only good for voting!

  13. @rashid
what are you talking about ?You think the airport is more important than the hospital ? If you dont have priorities yourself its not every zambian
    @Floyd Chitalu
The goverment in 2014 will start the construction of over 600 clinics in the country side.

  14. I am not too familiar with UTH nor with what its priorities are but from where I’m sitting I can intelligently state that finding parking space is probably the least of sick people’s worries when they are being rushed to the institution. I would also assume that find space where to sleep, with clean linen , fuctioning medical equipment, correct prescribed drugs both in quality and quantity and probably most of all, finding motivated, well trained and experienced medical personnel, is what is top-most in both the patients’ and relatives’ minds. Car Park, really?!!

    • You are indeed NOT familiar with the traffic situation at UTH, so you can be forgiven!

Also working in squalor can be a very demotivating factor no matter how well trained a doctor, nurse, midwife, etc, you are. Although these are other things are important, I think good, clean, well kept surroundings, and new buildings are just as vital/motivating to doctors, nurses, patients, relatives, etc—especially at a hospital.

  15. Supporting infrastructure is also needed. I developed a headache the last time i drove through UTH due to potholes..!

  16. What ever happened to the Euro bond money set aside for UTH. ..probably shared as there was no planning involved. ..its no wonder somr deputy minsters can now suddenly afford to give away $2000 to members of the public for ZWD info.

  17. The other ever opposing HH cadres are silent but when some minister urgues with a cadre it’s headline.where is ndobo ? PF is doing fine on capital projects.
