Five people have died in a fatal road accident around Ibis Gardens area on the Great North Road in Chibombo District.

ZANIS reports that the accident occurred around 03 hours this morning when two trucks collided head on.

One of the trucks with trailer registration number AAR 7747 which was loaded with bags of charcoal was heading for Lusaka while the other truck with trailer registration number ABN 8122 was moving towards Kabwe direction.

Medical Officer In charge at Liteta Hospital Natalie Simakoloyi confirmed the incident in an interview saying that nine casualties were brought to the hospital from the accident scene.

She said five were brought in dead, while one has been referred to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) in Lusaka and another to Kabwe General Hospital.

Ms Simakoloyi said two other victims are in a stable condition and are receiving medical treatment at the hospital.

A check by ZANIS at Liteta hospital found police officers and health workers trying to identify the bodies of the victims.

And one of the survivals, Bedwin Machilika, who was on a truck which was loaded with bags of charcoal, said there were seven people on the truck.

Mr Machilika could not however recall anything about what happened but said he was sleeping when the accident occurred.

And a check by ZANIS on the accident scene found the two trucks had blocked the road forcing other vehicles to use the side roads.

By broadcast time, officers from the Zambia police and fire Brigade had started removing the bags of charcoal and the truck wreckages from the road.

Police are yet to establish the cause of the accident.

  1. Too bad MTSRIP . What about ka Photo ba LT? Police , Ratsa must be serious with road patrols , how could charcoal be allowed to be carried in a truck with pipo on top of bags? UPND will never win in 2016, with such acts, remember that is the home town for HH wife

  2. Police are yet to establish the cause of the accident: The causer of the accident is the driver of the tuck carrying charcoal. These guys are always dangerous on the road. Their vehicles are defective with poor lighting system nor breaks, no nothing

    • That vehicle was very much road worth, in case you don’t know out was on its way to Hazida Motors for service. That charcoal was carried by the driver who wanted to make quick money minus the knowledge of the owner. The vehicle belonged to Teja Executive Lodge in mansa it was not for transporting charcoal.

  3. We still have a long way to go in terms of curbing such accidents! We have so many vehicles which are not worth to be on the road but nobody is doing anything about it, those Ifas and charcoal carrying trucks they only need a few kwachas to give our poor traffic officer and they are let off the hook, and these are the results! Just ban the whole charcoal business altogether!

  4. iwe ka ogi are you insane?bannin movement of trucks will reduce production u fool, some international trucks carry very important things, ogi ur a villager

  5. Mushota please; May you suffer some disease that can not be cured, your comments are always bad. You should not have been born I wish you could have rotted in the womb. Grow up Bit….ch

  6. Please ba Sata ensure that you make that road a dual carriage way. Too many lives have been lost for heaven’s sake. That can be a good legacy for you.

  7. The government claims to have money to start another loss making IDC/INDECO company when it can’t fix the Kabwe-Chibombo-Lusaka road. What priorities are these? Why must people keep on voting for a government like this? That stretch of the road is finishing people. If this stretch of the road was in Muchinga, Northern, Luapula or Copperbelt Province, a move would already have been taken to make it a dual carriage road.

  8. corrupt officers at Manyumbe police check point in Kapiri allowed this defective Truck to pass through the road block risking the life of charcoal traders because of kick back.Fifyakulya ubushiku that is the result. RATSA

and traffic police officers please do your work and do not comprise your positions.

  9. That truck wasn’t for transporting charcoal, it left mansa for Lusaka literally empty it was going for a routine service as it was due for service. When something happens like this let’s not jump into conclusions. Yes the driver could have been careless but the vehicle was very much roadworthy.

  10. THERE ARE JUST TOO MANY WITCHES IN CHIBOMBO WHO ARE BEING SPONSORED BY JONAS SHAKAFUSWA TO WIN A BYE ELECTION, ITS A CRUEL WORLD WE ARE IN.!!

  11. Zambian ‘roads’ are too thin and narrow.Theres need to widen them up and also construct multi lane roads.Vehicles too are defective. These ‘roads’ are killers and people dont see.Theres need to sue the state over these poor roads and deaths they cause.MSRIP.GOD BLESS ZAMBIA.

  12. But why are these fatal accidents happening so frequently in this area? After the bus accident last year, some Pentecostal churches conducted prayers in the area. Does it mean their prayers were not answered by God or did they just want publicity?

    MSRIP.

  13. DOES IT HAVE TO TAKE ONE TOP GOVERNMENT OFFICIAL TO DIE ALONG THE CHIBOMBO STRETCH FOR THIS PF GOVERNMENT TO CONSIDER SERIOUSLY TO BROADEN THIS ROAD.IF SO THEN LET IT BE. SO THAT THE POOR ZAMBIAN CAN BE SERVED,ESPECIALLY WHEN THE PF GOVERNMENT HAS NOT SERIOUSLY HELPED THE DECEASED FAMILIES OF THE CHIBOMBO POST BUS ACCIDENT.WHAT IS K15,000 PER FAMILY OF THE DECEASED .MR LOUD MOUTH YOU WILL NOT CHEAT THE DEAD.YES ZAMBIA ..THANK YOU FOR THE NATION MORNING.REMEMBER ONE DAY WE SHALL JOIN THEM.
