Mice hunt ignites forest fire in Kasama

Share

A fire has swept through 140 hectares of a forest on the outskirts of Kasama district.

Northern Province Principal Forestry Officer Catherine Nguvulu confirmed this in an interview with ZANIS in Kasama today.

Ms Nguvulu said the plantation caught fire after a group of young boys ignited the forest while digging for field mice.

She said the fire scorched compartments of young trees that were mostly planted four years ago.
The Officer said the development was unfortunate and a big loss to the department which had invested a lot of resources in protecting the plantation.

She warned members of the public to stop digging mice from plantations saying those found wanting will be dealt.

Ms Nguvulu further warned people tempering with forestry plantation in the province that will equally be dealt with .

Meanwhile, Ms. Nguvulu bemoaned the lack of firefighting equipment in the forestry department.

  1. easterners (Ngonis and chewas) have infested our bemba land. You have finished your mice in the east and now you are following our rats. yashani!!!!!!

    • What is in Bemba land that Easterners with the other bread basket of Zambia would want? Their is cattle, rice, corn, and other agricultural produce in the East. Lie to yourself some more. Try Luapula.

    • Vi bemba vi na chinto lol, busy calling us names ati mice eaters lomba usiku vili busy chasing rats with the entire village surrounding the forest ya, ati children bla bla-ma rabishy, am sure ma koswe ya ku ubemba ni ma nkwala ya Sata lol, get well soon mbuya 🙂

    • @s zulu

When did the congolese ever own ngombe? I thought you should have been candid and said the kasai have finished all primates (monkey and baboon) and have now turned to rodents. Shameful lazy bunch of thieving congolese these…..

  2. Awe you bembas just scandalize easterners during the day but @ night you are mice hunters. Now because you don’t know how 2 hunt mwashoka sanga….ninjala ya bwanji ba kolwe bami vuta?

  3. @ Siamanengo, Go back to grade 5 social studies lessons. Congo is not Zambia. Northern part of Zambia is not in Congo. The colonial name for Zambia is Northern Rhodesia. Congo was colonized by Belgium, Northern Rhodesia was a British Colony. These few basic facts can make you understand better the difference between Zambia and Congo. I therefore, warn you never to refer to the people of northern Zambia as Congolese.

  4. The Bembas have now switched to eating mice after being told that Monkeys carry the Ebola virus. Dear Bembas you don’t need to engage in Chitemene i.e Slash and burn just to catch a mouse. Careful dear Bembas Mice are equally unsafe. Ever heard of Bubonic plague?

  5. @ Mwanawakwitu, don’t lie to the world with your eyes open. Zambia has never been a protectorate. Protectorate concessions and colonialism have never been political features in Zambia. For your own information, Zambia was born in 1964. The first president of Zambia was Dr. Keneneth David Kaunda. The second president was Dr. Fredrick Titus Jcob Chiluba, the third president was Dr. Levy Mwanawasa, the fouth president was Dr. Rupiah Bwezani Banda. The fifth president is his excellence Michael Chilufya Sata. From this illustration where do you see a name of a protectorate or colonial governor of Zambia?

    • Northern Rhodesia had Governors, the last being Roy Welensky. They British overstayed their agreement of help in defense against the south, Boers and Germans. Our blood was shed back then to cleanse the land of usurpers and a kingdom trying to hold on to its last straws fighting against what Nebuchadnezzer saw in Babylon. Kingdoms of the future being fractured. Even protectorates get presidents. They had Kings before then.

  6. Finished MONKEYS moved to Kwiindi and burns the sanga. Awemba niba nchito! We don’t eat kwiindis we eat mbeba and don’t hide when doing it. Shame on you, come to Chipata for crash course

  7. @ Siamanengo do not get involved in our banter with our mbuyas. You have got your own.

To my mbuyas, I blame that Phiri who has bought a large portion of my beloved Chitamba village in Kasama . He is the one sending these kids to dig bakwindi (mbeba) for him!

  8. I thought the topic was about 140 hectors of forest being burnt. Cant see a single comment about the lost trees, only bemba and ngoni hogwash.
Any way let me stick to the topic least i join the band wagon. This is really a sad development. At a time when the world is grappling with the effects of climate change and global warming, we should actively invest in our forests and protect our precious resource. I strongly feel that successive governments have lamentably failed to invest in forestry. This could be a money spinner if well managed in years to come as the worlds natural resources deplete. Other than that I strongly feel we have an obligation as human beings to take care of our resources.
It is my hope that this sad incident will not repeat in the future.
