Opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) president Hakainde Hichilema has called on the Ministry of Education, Science, Vocational Training and Early Education to rescind its decision to deny over 4,000 first year University of Zambia students a bursary scheme.
Mr. Hichilema said it would be wrong to throw away such a large number of students into the streets simply because they cannot afford to pay university fees which their parents cannot afford.
He said this today during a programme on Millennium radio.
He said education for all was one important right thing which one should not be denied on the basis of being vulnerable or poor.
The UPND leader urged the ministry to reconsider its decision so that those over 4,000 first year students can also be considered for the bursary scheme being offered by government.
Mr. Hichilema noted that most students, who have failed to access the bursary scheme to study at UNZA, come from poor families.
He added that these are students who are brilliant but will not access their education because of their economic status, a thing he said was wrong.
PF answered that its IMPOSSIBLE. I don’t know what next HH will do about it.
She was accepted & that was enough.May be she killed herself coz parents failed to pay for her which is their duty to pay her fees.If I fail to buy a Lamborghin in an autoshop do i have kill myself? If so poor she could join as a secuiry gurad then pay thru part time or distance @ Zambia Open University /Copperstone fimo-fimo.
I am sorry guys but you were born in a fcuking wrong country. That’s your only offense. At the same time these same students were the ones who were throwing stones at us when we were trying to educate them that they need to vote for educated leaders. They were busy singing donchi kubeba. I hope you keep learning your lessons….and yes learning you will do but in a really hard way
HH, IT IS NOT REALISTIC FOR GRZ TO PAY FOR SUCH A LARGE NUMBER OF UNIVERSITY STUDENTS BECAUSE THE GOVERNMENT OBVIOUSLY CAN’T HAVE THE CAPACITY. THE BEST WAY IS WHAT A FORMER UNZA (white man) PROFESSOR ADVISED THE GOVERNMENT- TO BE GIVING STUDENT LOANS WHICH ARE REPAYABLE WHEN THE STUDENT COMPLETES THE UNIVERSITY PROGRAM AND STARTS WORK THAT EARNS HIM/HER EQUAL TO OR ABOVE A CERTAIN SALARY. STUDENT LOANS ARE WHAT CAN WORK BECAUSE LOANS CAN INSTILL RESPONSIBILITY INTO GRADUATES AND BECAUSE THE GOVERNMENT WOULD WANT TO RECOVER THE MONEY IT WILL BE IN A HURRY TO CREATE MORE JOBS.
@PETER: You went through free education, did you get a loan??. HOW MANY BY-ELECTIONS HAS THIS USELESS GOVERNMENT INDUCED??? ON AVERAGE, A SINGLE BY-ELECTION COSTS K6MILLION. WHERE IS FUEL SUBSIDY MONEY??? WHAT IS PF MANIFESTO SAYING????STOP HALLUCINATIONS
Valid point there hakainde. @Peter, yes that was Sepel deputized by that fat mp lungwangwa. My thoughts would be that govt considers bursaries for students at second year or second semester as applicable. The reason is that most of these freshers are UNZA tourists who flank at the first huddle due to leakages
This should be supported and a constraint optimisation be made to support Zambia’s Growth
Say USD 50 from savings or some rescheduling of not so critical cash lows to meet such a budget will be a good thing for Gov. Its all on GRZ accounts and only a swap spread that can be recovered whether from savings or moral obligation
The externalities and costs in parents borrowing still translates in the same and far outweighs the economies that Gov. achieves with funding the same
HH on this one we can marry your daughter Keep it Up
Lets also lead ship by supporting one of those distressed students also then will say yes that is the way
Budgeting for bursary should start way back at Grade twelve no’s not at application at higher education or admission
In most countries NDPs ranks education highly as it complements the same as a pool of educated cadres acts as a savings in FDI and excess exported attracts further forex
Even now with Zambia’s structural stiff economy, the number of educated is inadequate assuming that Gov. programmes to n wind works removing the widely held belief that their is no employment to help run the bursary scheme effectively
No need for politics, you want your child to go to Uni, you have to pay for it full stop.
GRZ should not be footing bills to educate peoples children at UNI.
Colleagues, the University of Zambia is not the only learning institution in Zambia, How many students fail to get government support to entre CBU, Mulungushi, Evelyn Hon, NRDC, ZASTI, etc. Government cannot afford to give scholarships to all students in these institutions. Lets be broad minded. Let Parents and the Private sector come on board as well
