22,000 people replace lost or defaced voters cards

A TOTAL of 22,000 people have replaced their lost or defaced voters’ cards in Lusaka, Kitwe, Ndola and Chingola since the exercise started.

Lusaka electoral officer Alex Mwansa says 13,934 people in the city managed to have their lost or defaced voter’s cards replaced.

Mr Mwansa said in an interview yesterday that the response from members of the public exceeded the expectation.

The replacing of voters’ cards started on December 28 last year and ended last Saturday.

In Chingola, 1,558 people had their lost or defaced voters’ cards replaced.

“The exercise went on very well, publicity was adequate. Only one man who came for a card replacement a day after the exercise closed on January 4 was turned away,” district electoral officer George Mulenga said in an interview yesterday.

He said Chingola constituency recorded 787 people turning up to replace their cards of which 591 were men and 196 women.
For Nchanga constituency, 586 were men and 185 women.

The district has 96, 941 registered voters – 56,316 registered voters in Chingola constituency and has 40,625 registered voters in Nchanga.

In Ndola, the district had 2,921 voters’ cards replaced.

“Kabushi constituency recorded 968 people who had their voters’ cards replaced, Bwana Mkubwa constituency 434, Chifubu constituency 913 while Ndola Central constituency recorded 606,’’ Ndola electoral officer Ernest Sumani said in an interview yesterday.

And Kitwe electoral officer Bornwell Lwanga says 3,885 people managed to replace their voters’ cards in the mining city, reports Alex Njovu.

Mr Lwanga said in an interview yesterday that his office is not fully satisfied with the number of people who turned up to replace their voter’s cards.

Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) spokesperson Crispin Akufuna said the commission is still compiling the total number of people who have had their voters cards replaced.

“We are still compiling the list but I am sure we will be done by tomorrow [today],” Mr Akufuna said.

  1. Why is it that the new cards issued showed wrong dates on them?

I doubt that the cards with wrong dates were only 480. They should be more than that. This should not have happened at all in the first place.

What guarantees are there that these voters with wrong cards will be allowed to vote.

When voters registers are sent out please UPND tell people to go and check to ensure that their names are there before voting date.

UPND voting agents and other voting agents should ensure that voter registers sent out are the correct ones.

I think this Akufuna is a correct guy to be part of the ECZ. In future such people should not be political appointees because they easily get compromised.

    Has ECZ agreed to PVT?

Vote HH for a better Zambia.

    • Solwezi resident how many NW in foreign service or have cabinet posts. PF is the most devisive party in Zambia since independence . That’s why they will not be voted for by all peace loving zambians from mpulungu to sesheke
