OFFICIAL STATEMENT
9th May 2015

Remarks attributed to newly appointed PF Deputy Secretary General Mumbi Phiri are very unfortunate for a senior person in a ruling party. She was quoted as having urged Zambians not to vote for “ba kachema”. Mumbi Phiri’s apparent derogation was aimed at majority Zambians that earn a living by raring livestock. Our problem is not so much “bakachema” but the inherent discrimination against what the PF consider are low class citizens in this country.

From Mumbi Phiri and her PF’s message, it is wrong for marketeers, toilet cleaners, fishermen, bus conductors, janitor, kaponyas and many other blue-collar jobholders and their children to aspire higher in life.

Apparently, the same remarks were uttered by President Edgar Lungu, during the Chawama bye-election rally which to us in UPND is worse than xenophobia. It is now clear for all to see that even when Lungu and his PF government claim to be fighting discrimination, they are actually openly promoting it making the whole motto of ‘one Zambia one Nation’ meaningless and a sham.

It is surprising that Lungu and his people in PF have so much hatred and low regard for fellow Zambians who earn a living through toiling in the streets, keeping livestock such as cattle, goats, sheep, pigs, etc, when they are leading a country where more than 70 percent have no decent jobs.

We now understand why Lungu and his PF government have failed to create jobs and have so much contempt for farmers in the country. This is why we have rising food costs due to poor agriculture policies which include paying farmers late kabili nibakachema fye.

As UPND, we are not shy to say agriculture, which includes livestock, will be one of the engines of our economic agenda that will reduce hunger and poverty and reduce the cost of living for our people and create decent jobs and wealth through value addition.

At a time major industrial sectors are declining in Zambia, the UPND will prioritise Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) sectors for job and wealth creation which, Lungu and his PF just consider as mere ‘bakachema’.

Economically booming countries even neighbouring Botswana, which is basically a desert, are thriving because they offered economic opportunities to these sectors PF consider as ‘bakachema’ to be the creators of jobs and wealth.

But to Lungu and PF, Zambians doing Small and Medium economic activities are basically sinners who should not be assisted to even aspire higher and be eligible to rule the country.

Zambians should now judge for themselves who are bent on discriminating and dividing the country.

As UPND, our campaigns are always inclusive of all citizens and issue-based hence dubbed ‘Zambia United”.

    • HH calls himself kachema so what’s insulting about that. People who are still hurting about what mumbi said should ask HH about his life before he dribbled Zambia on privatization.

    • i am sure this bakachema would not have created so much hullabaloo if she had said it in english.

The fact that she said it in one of the local languages(bemba) meant different things to different people.

instead of bakachema, it would have sounded more respectful if she said Shepperd or janitor instead of namazai….. etc and I am sure UPND would not have felt offended by such sweet and flowery sounding names.

    • @ Sponge job, only a kretin tells lies and and is comfortable with him/herself. Just for the recored HH was an adviser and not responsible to the decisions government made on privatization

  1. A case of the pot calling the cattle black….talk about discrimination, and the UPND should be crowned champions. They went as far as forging a medical report which said that Lungu is HIV positive and should have not been president because of this disease(not that Lungu is). Isn’t that preaching discrimination against people living with HIV? Don’t preach tenets of non discrimination that you as a party have failed to live by.

    • I ll now vote upnd not the njala pf party of belly and triblist politicial who always talk tribe not development which is not in their foolish heads.am real bemba mind u I hate pipo who shrive on trible talk like the pf and to make things worse they are even including all bembas or speaking for us all bembas as if we all support triblism.chama and mumbi should speak for themselves not us because they have being given jobs by ka lungu and they think we are all employed or all bembas all eating together with them, big no as bembas we are suffering together with our fellow tongas, lundas, luvales, kaondes but these fools chama and mumbi want to use us for them to loot and prepare their children’s future and family leaving us lost in poverty big no to me.these are the willie sandas who are…

  2. New Zealand, a small country has probably a tenth of Zambia’s mineral wealth ang land mass, but is more then ten times richer. This is the paradox that HH was talking about and trying to make you understand.

Over there in New Zealand almost everyone is a so called Kachema.
There are more sheep and cattle than human and they are swimming in
riches as a result,,,,,, even giving you AID and you shamelessly taking it!

  3. Who is disputing that UPND are not “Bakachema”? You now feel what it feels to discriminate others?
Anyways, as far as we are concerned, since you run a tonga party, only tongas keep cattle and only the person who looks after cattle is a kachema. So what’s your problem????
    Tonga party!!!!!!!

  4. To me, Ba Kachema is not a bad word. It means that we care for all Zambians. We are the shepherds of this land called Zambia. PF is campaigning for us. Bravo!

  5. Seem Mumbi ‘s lack of education is a problem. And her hallucination is also lack of proper good sex.
This must not be brought in politics.

  6. Ba Kakoma, trying to get sympathy from the street vendors et al those people toiling in the streets. Forget it,those people credit PF for giving them a livelihood. No wonder they are ever in a state of euphoria. No matter what you call Lungu and PF. Try another strategy, there will be a fuss about this kachema remark but it will die down and people will move on. I have never heard anyone from UPND condemn the hate speech that ZWD spews against EL indicating so called medical reports but you are quick to issue statements against Mumbi Phiri’s statement. Get a life, all those call low class will still vote for PF in 2016 as they deem the party to be for the poor. You have already branded yourselves as a party for intelligent and reasonable people whilst those who support PF are stupid &…

  7. Bembas dont know that herding cattle is a richmans pastime, they have not even heard that Reagan,Bush etc are ranchers, one bemba servant we had used to refuse eating sour milk ‘ati fishina fyangombe’ lol

  8. I have always said it and I m saying it again. Zambians are blessed and endowed with STUPIIDITY and DOCILITY especially the type of mumbi phiri the Mickey mouse. It is shameful to be a Zambian with pipo like mumbi phiti being close to power. Wanza wenu.

  9. I am a kachema. Pigs ngombe nkuku and soya beans have made this international engineer enjoy free amabishi. Mumbi try being a kachemaress!!

    • Chi colour ati international engineer, go and bath. When you are busy insulting other people you are always happy. Dog

  10. THIS IS OVERBLOWN AND THE TROUBLE IS ZAMBIANS DON’T ACCEPT THEIR VERNACULAR WORDS. HAVE YOU EVER HEARD AN AMERICAN GOING BALLISTIC BY BEING CALLED COWBOY? HERE PEOPLE ARE CALLED DRIVER, CLEANER, COWBOY, COOK, PLUMBER AND THEY ARE PROUD OF THOSE NOUNS. A ZAMBIAN WOULD RATHER BE CALLED MANAGER INSTEAD OF NYAMASAI, CATTLE MANAGER INSTEAD OF KACHEMA (IN FACT KACHEMA SOUNDS COOL TO ME), ENGINEER INSTEAD OF PALAMBA OR WHATEVER. ZAMBIANS, ACCEPT YOUR LANGUAGES AND THEIR WORDS AND BE PROUD OF WHAT YOU DO. DON’T BE ANGERED FOR ADDRESSING YOU BY WHAT YOU PROFESSIONALLY DO IN BEMBA, LOZI, TONGA OR ANY OTHER LANGUAGE. AND BA KAKOMA, DON’T MAKE POLITICAL CAPITAL OUT OF THIS SILLY ISSUE.

  11. Get a job!get a life type, she lives on politics so what name will you give her?Thugness mayb in venacular,,oop!

  12. In every corner of the world be it the USA, the UK or elsewhere livestock farming has been and still is part of civilisation but it so sad that the Bembas think that when one rears cattle he is primitive.
The president of Zambia himself mouthed similar sentiments directed at HH. How sad! They often spew out this nonsense after stuffing their bellies with steak roasted in a pub.
The oldest key industry in Botswana is livestock and a Motswana can never sink so low to utter such nonsense and I know what I am talking about. Why can’t these people talk about what the know best, monkeys?

    • Exactly @London eye. These same Mickey mice go to buy the same inama without shame and ridicule the wise herdsmen who bring them food for their hookworms. Cattle ranching is big business in Argentina, USA, Brazil, Botswana, and countries were u borrow money. That’s why such stupidity from lungu downwards is pathetic. I own cattle and goats and for me that’s wealth as it was in the bible times. These clueless orangutans are a STENCH! Sies!

    • Whatever profession one engages in should be respected and dignified because it sustains families and it is honest livelihood gain.

  13. Kakoma is taking the kachema issue out of context. Why do we have so petty politicians really, crying ovet little things every now and then. UPND should have already gotten a thick skin and not care about simple rhetoric. Last election HH was filmed in Bauleni telling people he will create real jobs implying that odd jobs ate not good for the people, now we have this nonsense from Kakoma. Trying to gain political mileage on every small issue will not usher them into government!
