Zambia beat Ghana in Cosafa ‘leftovers’ semifinal clash

Share

Zambia made up for Sunday’s 2015 Cosafa Cup quarterfinal loss on Wednesday when they beat Ghana 3-0 in consolation Plate semifinal at Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg.

All three goals came in the first half of the match as Zambia redeemed themselves for their 5-4 post-match penalty loss to Namibia after a scoreless draw.

Striker Bornwell Mwape blasted in the first goal from close-range in the 24th minute after Ghana’s defenders failed to deal with a Jackson Mwanza corner.

Defender Aaron Katebe side-footed the second in the 29th minute when he turned in a downward header from Mwanza.

The goal was the ex-Afrisports defender’s first in a Zambia shirt after nine caps for the player from FC Platinum in Zimbabwe.

Captain Nathan Sinkala marked his debut Cosafa Cup match with a goal when he whipped in one of his trademark rocketing shots in the 41st minute.

Ghana stepped on the gas after the break but Zambia held on to ensure they saved face after failing to defend the Cosafa Cup.

Zambia will face either Malawi or 2015 Cosafa Cup hosts South Africa in the Plate final on Friday at the same venue.

Bafana and The Flames were in action in the second kickoff at the same venue for a place in the May 29 Plate final.

  1. I do not comprehend this cosafa plate thing. I thought we lost the again against Namibia.

What was the line up for Ghana?

    • There are too many competitions i think. We had AFCON just 4 months ago, the Zambian league is under way. Players are tired playing the same boring teams in the region. Cosafa should be club level. CAF should bring together south american and African countries tournament, we are better off leaning towards our comrades there.

  2. I know the Black Stars national team players, but today’s line up, sorry I couldn’t even recognise any. I just watched for ten minutes anyway when it was 2:0

  3. They hav won but wat they shud realise is that zambia featured experienced players frm the senior team compared to ghana so we stil hav a lot learn and put things in order

  4. if Zambia had lost will you have forgiven them becoz it was a leftover? you are like kakoma who said kapita never contributed anything to UPND for 17 yrs. Go boys go go boys

  5. Congratulations but…..For purposes of records, it will go down in history that Zambia beat Ghana but as they say the devil is in the detail. This inconsequential win says a lot about what is wrong with our team – inconsistency. When you have so much hope, the lads play badly and when you least expect their raise their game.
In this particular game, though, Zambia looked better because Ghana was too bad. Our defense was disjointed especially for much of the second half and they were lucky that the strikers for Ghana found it easier to miss the target than score.
On a positive note Allan Mukuka has proved that he has what it takes to make that position his on. His contribution in all the games he has played has been immense. Congratulations once more but a win for “left overs”?

  6. I am waiting for the FBI to pounce on Sepp Blatter, Issa Ayatou and Kalusha Bwalya. The sooner the better for our soccer.
