South African-based Zambian television and radio presenter Chilu Lemba, has released a single titled “Tota Maja”, featuring Ruff Kaida and Slap D.
The song, translated as clap your hands, has been produced by TK of Romaside Studios, who he also worked with on his previous hit song Njota.
The song is already enjoying airplay on some radios and is being downloaded on various platforms online.
It is proving to be another house club banger.
Chilu says his passion for music has been with him from a tender age, following him through to high school, where he was the star of the school choir, evidenced by the Chengelo Music Award he was given in 1992.
However, in the mid-80s, rap music became his main obsession, resulting in him belonging to a succession of rap groups such as The Fabulous Four in 1988, BoKab in 1991, Capellany in 1993 and the Man X Crew in 1994.
Although his early musical compositions where highly influenced by United States-based hip hop artistes, in the early 90s, he aligned his music with his African identity, adopting the name King Bongo in the process.
He says although hip hop performed in indigenous languages is now commonplace, Zambia’s first rap hit containing verses in local vernacular, was performed by Alan Mvula formerly MC Suicide and him back in 1995.
Then radio presenter Nkweto Tembwe was the first disc jockey to play the song on radio in early 1995. Chilu had written the song two years earlier infusing Bemba and Nyanja into the lyrics.
In 2000, Chilu contributed the song Shibuka to the ambitious. The Rhythm Nation Project released by the Mondo Music Corporation which had other artistes like Black Muntu, Beige, Shatel, Just Close, Zion Dub Squad, Serious K, Lindi, CRI$I$, Tribal Cousin and Meltdown.
In 2006, he launched his debut album titled Sound Legacy, featuring music written and performed by Chilu with appearances by Thiwe, Adam Lomas, rapper Jon Woo, Afrokun, Mainza and Joe Chibangu among others.
His sophomore album Flowers, Needles & Drumbeats followed in 2012, with the single Njota proving a major hit.
On the album, he worked with among others Pompi and JK while the producers included James Mulenga, Timothy Siame and TK.
