THE Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) is targeting to capture 1.7 million new voters during the voter registration exercise which is scheduled to start on September 14 this year.

The number of registered voters in Zambia currently stands at 5,166,084.

ECZ public relations manager Cris Akufuna said in an interview in Ndola that the voter registration exercise will provide an opportunity for eligible citizens to be included on the voters’ register.

Mr Akufuna said the mobile voter registration exercise will be done in phases and will run from September 14 to November 11.

He, however, said registration of voters at civic centres will continue up to March next year.

“Preparations for voter registration are progressing well. Our target is to make 1.7 million new registrations. All first time voters have an opportunity to be included in the register by participating in the exercise,” Mr Akufuna said.

He said ECZ will clean the register when the voter registration exercise comes to an end by removing names of deceased persons.

He called on members of the public that have lost their relatives to provide the necessary information and documentations to ECZ teams that will be undertaking the voter registration exercise.

“Those who want to transfer and relocate should use the voter registration to have their particulars amended,” Mr Akufuna said.

He said ECZ will soon start sensitising members of the public on the impending mobile voter registration exercise.

  1. Please, make this target as evenly and as wide as possible, keeping in sight the population demographics so that we avoid some losers to say that they lost because only 10 new voters where picked in their “Strongholds”.

  2. can’t believe this, less than 6 million registered voters out of a population of more than 14 million and we have dead people in the same less than 6 million. umuntu needs to register full stop

  3. It’s due to the ineptitude of the political system. Otherwise, Zambia should have had a voter roll of 8 million plus.

  4. ECZ MUST WORK WITH THE REGISTRATION OFFICE VERY CLOSELY BECAUSE WE HAVE SEEN WHAT IS CURRENTLY ON THE GROUND IS NOT NOT GOOD. WE HAVE NOT HEARD COMPLAINTS FROM NORTHERN, MUCHINGA AND LUAPULA BUT THE PROGRESSION IS THAT THEY MANY PEOPLE HAVE REGISTERED.
COMING TO CENTRAL PROVINCES WE HAVE A LOT OF BIASNESS WHERE THE REGISTRATION GUYS ARE DOING HIT AND RUN. THIS IS NOT HEALTHY AND WILL JUST BRING COMFUSSIONS IN THE COUNTRY BECAUSE MANY HAVE BEEN LEFT OUT. WESTERN, SOUTHERN AND NORTHWESTERN PROVINCE WE HAVE NOT HEARD AS TO WHEN THE EXERCISE WILL COMMENCE KNOWINGLY THAT RAINS IN N/W STARTS EARLY. THIS IS NOT FAIR TO START IN NOVEMBER.

  5. This is an opportunity for the young generation to retire the old generation who are increasing retirement age, instead of giving the jobs to the graduates. Young people, let us speak NOW!
