Copperbelt University (CBU) Vice Chancellor, Naison Ngoma has gone on an indefinite leave, effective today.

And the University Deputy Chancellor, Shadreck Chama has since been appointed to act as head of the institution.

The Council of the Copperbelt University has made the decisions, after a special meeting called yesterday.

The decision comes amid the impasse, which has rocked the learning institution, resulting in the closure of the university by Education Minister, Michael Kaingu.

The council has also resolved that all university members of staff, who were involved in the labour withdrawal from June 24, this year be charged in accordance with the disciplinary code.

In a statement availed to ZNBC news, the university council says its decisions are part of several measures, aimed at resolving the impasse at CBU.

The council has also appointed a team of independent experts to examine the grievances of the CBU Academic Union, and is expected to complete its task by July 31 this year.

The university council has also agreed to meet on Friday, July 31, this year to deliberate on the recommendations of the appointed team of experts, at which it will also determine the re-opening date of the CBU.

Dr Kaingu announced the closure of the university last Wednesday.

Recently, he Copperbelt University Students Union (COBUSU) and the Copperbelt Students Council petitioned government to remove CBU Vice Chancellor Naison Ngoma.

COBUSU President Humphrey Mwenya told ZNBC News in a walk-interview in Kitwe that peace will only return at the institution once Professor Ngoma is removed.

But last week, Professor Ngoma told ZNBC news that he will not vacate office.

Professor Ngoma said he was committed to ensuring that the academic standards at CBU are improved.

    • lol a naisoni boxi ya tenta ka? Go lay down return to the centre for peace studies you have zero management skills

    • Let him go and lead his fellow soldiers.

Chama is not bad for CBU. But uleke kunenanena banzako. Anyway, each one of us has a weakness.

    • this man naison whatever has a very low intellect despite him being very educated. last time he came on znbc question time, he was very pathetic.

  1. Let him go and lead his fellow soldiers.

    • Imwe ba jay jay…have you even been to the university. Don’t talk about things you don’t understand. The position of chancellor is just for ceremonial purposes like graduations, not administrative. You can only see the chancellor Prof mwanalushi during these functions. Trying to sound wise when you actually don’t know what you are talking about…

  3. Hmmm…so these guys listen. Thats good. Let the VC go but don’t do it again. Appoint someone to VC who has the credentials and the capability not a cadre. Even the acting VC needs to go thorugh the interview process if he really wants the Job. This is an academic institution and a lot of money and votes are at stake. Run it properly.

  4. that’s y education wont improve in Zambia ,wen someone wants to improve the standards u raise against him, Mr.Ngoma wanted serious recturing not someone to come for work drunk bt ifyofine fyamuletelela kanofye balepoleka elyo balefumya reckage kuma students

  5. I AM FOR THE IDEA OF HAVING A BUSINESS MANAGER RUNNING THE BUSINESS AND ADMNISTARTIVE SIDE OF THE UNIVERSITY. THESE PROFESSORS ARE NOT SUITABLE FOR THIS JOB. LET THEM RUN ACADEMIC LIFE OF THE UNIVERSITY.

    THE FOLLOWING ARE PRIORITIES IN ORDER;
    1. SECURITY OF STUDENTS/LECTURERS AND PROPERTY
    2. STUDENT/ACADEMIC WELFARE
    3. ACADEMIC – CALENDER

ANY OTHER ORDER, LEADS TO VIOLENCE AT THESE INSTITUTIONS.

THE ENTIRE UNIVERSITY MUST BE SEALED OFF. THERE SHOULD BE NO ANAUTHORISED ENTRY. ENTRY TO SPECIFIC PLACES AND HOSTELS AND ROOMS MUST BE RESTRICTED AND RECORDED IN A COMPUTER SECURITY SYSTEM.

WITH THIS SECURITY IN PLACE, YOU HAVE SOLVED EVEN SOME OF THE ACADEMIC AND STUDENT WELFARE PROBLEMS.

MONEY RAISING VENTURES. 100% PAYMENTS BY GRZ ON A COST PLUS PROFIT RECOVERY BASIS ON GRZ…

    • ofimba, you want cbu to become a gazetted prison on 29th June ,one Naison Ngoma called the police to come and beat innocent children the police feasted on clothes, laptops and money especially in female hostels and your funny Govt was asleep when they awoke up the institution was closed using a statement drafted for minster from cbu.

  6. Yaa he should go forcing young ones to enter lodges and boarding houses for his friends in exploitation

Then his farm next to CBU research facility in a tent for CBU to rent his lodges He should Go

He is the one carrying a Board and being assisted by a CBU chola Boy

Elder Chama is a better option

God sees You are now being punished for being a sinner

  7. Offering loans to students and distressed students sponsoring parents and you increase terms and fees and repose houses when they default shame on you lecturers what a burden you put on parents and students in the name of education

students who will not be refunded by landlords for missed period of learning for rentals in boarding houses paid when parents borrowed to sacrifice shame on you fake lecturers drowning Zambia’s intellectual fortunes No wonder Student react in distress

  8. Its a scheme with bankers then they fail students to milk parents

That is why students are committing students when they are failed by these conning useless lecturer because they cannot put up with It

Its a scheme here at UNZA and Government should move in and charge people for racketeering

  9. 31st July, wipe the slate clean and be rid of these people!!

We want responsible Educators who understand the most important element in their jobs (which should also be a vocation), are the young brains that will lead Zambia to a brighter future.

They showed derelict behaviour and wild abandon of their trusted positions in our nations’ needs.

Please let them go and get a new lot with the right mind. Disciplinary measures will fall short if they are allowed to remain so they can poison future disputes with same behaviour, as they will feel they got away with this conduct. It’s a threat we cannot ignore.

  10. Professor Ngoma was my classmate before he became professor. He was a serious minded student when it came to studies and he could speak the Queen’s language as if it was his mother tongue. Well he was also a dedicated cadet officer.

  11. In Zambia a manager who steps on the toes of juniors because of following principles will not be popular with the juniors and they will do everything to remove him/her. It was recently found that some lecturers at CBU were fond of ‘drunken lecturing’ and management wanted to put an end to this by introducing breathlizers. This didn’t go well with a lot of staff!

  12. It is interesting to read comments from people who are very far from CBU… I wonder if any of you have sat in a meeting with the prof? He really loves hearing his own voice!
