A MANSA magistrate’s court has jailed a man of Chikaya village in Chipili district to one month imprisonment for insulting a woman.

Stanley Mulenga, was sent to jail for calling a woman a vagina using the Bemba language.

Appearing before magistrate Sibaleya Chikuba was Mulenga of Chikaya Village in Chipili District who pleaded guilty to one count of using insulting language.

On August 18, 2015, Mulenga approached Catherine Chanda’s house in Chikaya Village around 01:00 hours and begun using obscene language.

This prompted Ms Chanda to go outside to investigate who the person insulting her was. She found Mulenga and proceeded to report him to the community crime prevention unit that apprehended and took him to police.

Mulenga wept loudly before he was sentenced as it became clear he would go to prison for telling Ms Chanda ‘cinyo cobe’ in iciBemba.

He pleaded with the court to be lenient as it was the devil that had taken hold of him when he committed the crime.

“My lord I have not even built a house for my children and if I go to jail they will suffer,” he said in mitigation.

The magistrate sentenced him to one month imprisonment which he hoped would act as a lesson.

    • But Mumbi Phiri openly call us “Ba ffikala”. I wish she had said that to Mulenga, he could hit back ati “

    • Ba LT; what kind of reporting is this. How do you repeat the same “insult” that just landed a man in jail? You are the same people who have rendered words like $atani$t, r.ape, tribali$t, f00l to name but a few as deragotary and yet you have the audacity to “insult” all the women folk on here by your careless reporting!

  1. This could be the beginning of the hate speech legislation I have been advocating for. There is too much of it in Zambia.

  2. Surely is there no community service sentences in Zambia…can’t the judiciary and the respective councils work together for a “Payback” scheme in the form of street cleaning instead of spending people to already full prisons for petty offences.

    • Community service sentence or better a “Payback” in form of Stanley Mulenga collecting fuel wood, water, doing all laundry and, cleaning Catherine’s compound for a month! To cap it all repair the roof of Catherine’s house!

    • I suspect there’s no one to supervise such sentences so the system prefers the easy way out locking them up

  3. Should have added a few strokes of the cane too! How do you go and start insulting someone at 1am. His mitigation alone should have seen him do 12 months with hard labour!

  4. How do you someone for referring to another by part of their bodily organ?

When we talk about insults in zed such as this one, we laugh and wonder why we ever did get worked up by these words.

    The courts have gone mad.

  5. …drama…drama pa Zed….in comparison to the crimes committed, he will do more time relative to what Liato and Kanene did……fine with a month jail sentence but should have been suspended for six months…..that could still have been enough lesson for him…

  6. Imwe ba LT have dome ethics. Kids read your page. You can’t be repeating such despicable insults in the guise of reporting. All of us who are well read know that nowhere in the world are insults repeated by media. The insults are usually covered by other letters. Remove the insults above unless you are misogynists

  7. Ba LT stop ignoring your readers! Remove these insults you primitive pretenders to journalism. People let’s boycott this website if it doesn’t want to behave!

  8. The man was wrong, how can he go to a woman’s house at an alkward hour.i think ther’s something else he wanted to do besides wat he did,****is he married?
