Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) Copperbelt Province Information and Publicity Secretary Mr Peter Phiri has challenged MMD Lunte Member of parliament Mr Felix Mutati to come clean and clarify recent media reports suggesting that Mr Mutati was asking MMD President Dr Nevers Sekwila Mumba to step down.
Commenting on the recent Radio Phoenix interview the Lunte lawmaker had earlier in the week in which he was quoted as saying that he is ready to run for the MMD Presidency and that there was confusion in the MMD, Mr Phiri said that Mr Mutati should publicly apologize to MMD members for playing a very big role in the destabilization of the party by supporting and vigorously campaigning for the United Party for National Development (UPND) president Hakainde Hichilema in the January 2015 Presidential elections.
Mr Phiri said that Mr Mutati was welcome to work with the MMD in the spirit of unity and reconciliation but must be sincere in his efforts and should be seen to be supporting the party. He said if Mr Mutati was quoted out of context in his interview, he should silence his critics by not only publicly setting the record straight, but by showing his support for the party by traveling with his president Dr Mumba all over the country and campaigning for the party during by-elections.
“Where was Mutati during MMD’s darkest hour? Where was Mutati when then Registrar of Societies, Clement Andeleki slapped a K400 million bill on the party with 7 days in which to pay? Where was Mutati when NAPSA sent bailiffs to the Party offices for a K279 million rent debt or when ZNBC, Times of Zambia and Daily Mail came with bills totaling over K500 million? Where was Mr Mutati when the party was lumbered with a K900 million legal bill?” asked Mr Phiri.
Mr Phiri has further challenged Mr Mutati to make a public statement to the MMD structures and the entire membership countrywide on what personal efforts he has made to strengthen and rebuild the party since it lost power in 2011.
“Mr Mutati was forgiven after appearing before the MMD Disciplinary Committee this year and should be grateful that he was not permanently expelled from MMD. We are now hearing disturbing reports that he is having dark corner meetings in the Copperbelt, in Eastern, Northern and other provinces. We are told that he is now trying to sell himself as the only one who can save MMD. We challenge him to publicly refuse if this is not true and set the record straight,” said Mr Phiri.
surely ba mmd, you have a small number of members and are forcing people to resign from the party, i was one of the people that fought hard for the mmd to come into power and it is sad to see it go to ruin now.
MMD became divided into two before the presidential elections – won’t go into the details as we all know about the court case. Anyways, the faction led by RB was to support ECL in what was being termed the wako-ni-wako whilst the other faction led by the duly elected presido Dr.Mumba was to support #ZambiaUnitedTeam aka UPND. I don’t know why Dr.Mumba backtracked, but the others members decided to go ahead Mutati being one of them. So I want to advise Mr.PPhiri to just address the debt issue and not that he campaigned for UPND.

You have just contradicted yourself. Firstly, you start off being diplomatic and asking Mutati to explain himself but then you start accusing him of holding dark corner meetings. Can you just be upfront and bring charges against him?
Must admit thoughts of “no serious prodpects in UPND” and heading back to Nevers Mumba a soft target in a sense (and my personal view) quite a formidable punching bag given the number of hits his taken – came to mind when i read the story. I am betting UPND have made it clear he is not being considered on their ticket…Zambian politics can be depressing
Only people like Mutati , Milupi, Chipimo and HH can save Zambia from Anyandule!

Its sad that we can post comments without understanding the genesis of the topic at hand… firstly felix mutati was never in upnd he was with them he has said this time and again that he is MMD and this can not be changed by any association he has had with other people from different parties… research on how the pact between upnd and some mmd leaders came about… understand the topic before you start criticising and accusing… whether you like or not felix mutati is a political factor and he has always given pf checks and balances some of his opinions have actually been adopted by the government the only difference between him and other leaders is that he is not a rattle mouth who talks unnecessarily. . You will kill or drown MMD if you think Nevers can win the presidency of Zambia. Nevers is a failure. Come 2016 if MMD does not sort itself out, MPs will continue supporting PF and UPND. The MPs already threw in the towel when they were told by the Supreme court that Nevers was the official MMD candidate in January 2015. For 2016, MMD needs to change its strategy otherwise it is headed for oblivion. My advise to Mutati and company if MMD continues to bury its end in the sand, then the time to create a new party is now. If the new constitution becomes law, then 50% + 1 will kill parties like PF and UPND, then this new party led by Mutati or Musokotwane or Chituwo or Lugwagwa may stand a chance.
Mutati is power hungry. He is calculating where he can be made vp since in the UPND GBM has taken the position he was promised during the by election. It is unfair to treat Mumba who has saved the MMD from strong forces since it lost power in 2011. His constituency is suffering and he knows very well that the guy who has been campaigning under PF is taking Lunte Seat in 2016. He is in a dilemma. We wish him all the best in his quest for power.

Pretty, maybe Dr Mumba backpedalled if he quickly saw through the Upnd deceit, just like GBM will soon backtrack on his convenience with HH. Intelligent people like Mutati have seen through Upnd.
I used to underate Nevers Mumba,but with what the man has gone through, he is man indeed. They abandoned him, they campaigned for other parties, they let him sort out bills on his own with bailiffs all over, Rupiah Banda even aligned MMD mps to PF, virtually leaving Nevers Mumba isolated. PF has usual dramatized fake defections, with MMD fake defectors making news headlines daily. For those who have stood with this man, I salute you. This is a president who was even arrested for merely visiting a chief in Lufwanyama, Bwana, you are a man
Is Mumba running a once vibrant political party or has he driven it or driving it into oblivion like Kaweche has done UNIP? MMD is surely a shadow of itself. Mumba must be skweezing a back out of the party somehow to be holding on. Mutati can rejuvenate the party by breathing in a new lease of life. Ten thousand votes Mumba won the party was a disgrace. He should have resigned without being asked. What is he waiting for?
