Center for Reproductive Health and Education (CRHE) has opposed the call by the Chinese Ambassador to Zambia Yang Youming urging Zambia to increase its population in order to grow more opportunities in the economy

CRHE Executive Director Amos Mwale has explained to QFM News in a statement that it is inappropriate to increase the population with the current social and economic challenges in the country.

Mr. Mwale has furthermore explained that Zambia’s population rate stands at 2.9 percent which he says is not sustainable because it does not match with the enrolment levels of school as well as the health sector where most people depend on government services.

He says if there are ways and means that the Chinese Government can help Zambia to sustain the population they will do well to tell the nation rather than advocating for population growth amidst these social and economic challenges.

  1. What is shocking in the days of economic hardships, is seein couples with 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 children. In addition to that they’ve added responsibilities of taking care of orphans left by close relatives Ladies and gentlemen, that’s not sustainable. Four is the optimal number. I know someone will say that, nanga ni ndalama za nyoko

    • Your brain has not travelled enough, it needs to. Leadership is the problem, not population. Health care and life education as well.

    • I think the ambassador has taken too much Jameson, advice like that coming from a country who for decades have had a ONE CHILD POLICY!!! The Ambassador risks the Gulag should his bosses hear about this – never thought this was Chinese foreign policy!!

  2. ..the Chinese envoy may have a point….look at economies of Japan, India, Brazil, UK, USA, Nigeria RSA and China itself…..vis-à-vis their population…..the only thing we would lack of is high average IQ among the people and work culture of seriousness….may be to some extend….corruption levels

    • Not may, he has a point. The more people, the more workers, the more markets to invest in. The important point here is leadership of the wise order. All shall be well.

    • Not true, USA has about 350 million people with such a vast land scale, yet the largest economy. China and Japan have more people per square mile. Do the math. It’s the economy silly!

  3. The Chinese envoy is correct. A larger population, means a larger economy. Nigeria’s economy is now the continents largest, guess what? Their population is the largest on GOD’s mot blessed continent. China is about to take over the world’s economy because they are five economies in one nation.

The Key! Here is that the people should have larger families are the healthy are wealthy Zambians.

  4. Don’t be stupid people. Economy is defined by the productive capacity of each citizen. That capacity requires education and training to equip citizens with skills to process and produce goods for the world market. Higher participation in the world market is what makes an economy strong. We need to create jobs which result in products which earn foreign exchange. At the moment the Zambian population is increasing faster than we can provide services including education and health. That means we are getting poorer and poorer by the day. If Zambians are getting poorer it means only foreigners will have money to invest here. Guess what -we headed for a second economic colonization – this time it is the Chinese. Soon it will be by other African countries.

  5. Amaka yabwingi. It was numbers that defeated the British Army, with far superior weapons, at the time against the Zulu’s.

  6. The China man just wants Zambia to increase it’s population with more Chinese whom he thinks will bring in more development. We just need right leaders to have development

  7. Investors first look at the population size then other things like peace follow. Mind u 60% of manufacturing firms are foreign they ve gone there bcos of cheap labour, ready market etc policy & policy follow later. Zed is attracking co bcos of gud pf marketing outside previously others took to be land locked but now we are sold as land linked surrounded by a ready market in the neigbourhood
