The National Revolutionary Party-NRP- has appealed to President Edgar Lungu not to assent to the Zambian Constitution and Constitution Amendment Bills.

NRP President Cosmo Mumba says his party is opposed to the ‘50 percent plus one’ clause in the constitution, as a threshold for the winning Presidential Candidate.

Dr Mumba says the ‘50 percent plus one vote’ clause poses a political challenge not only for the opposition parties but also the ruling Patriotic Front-PF because the country has various ethnic and religious groupings.

He has proposed that the 2016 General Elections should be held under the current 1996 Constitution.

Dr Mumba says the new constitution should be reserved for the 2021 General Elections.

He said this at a press briefing in Lusaka on Thursday.

Dr Mumba however has welcomed the Vice Presidential Running Mate Clause.

Dr Mumba has further welcomed the Grade 12 Certificate requirement for those seeking public offices.

And Dr Mumba has announced that his party will hold a convention in February, 2016.

At a press briefing in Lusaka,Dr Mumba signed a cheque of 30 thousand Kwacha as nomination fee for his candidature at the convention.

He said all party’s positions will be up for contest except the two Vice Presidents who are appointed by the Party President.

Meanwhile, Dr Mumba has praised President Edgar Lungu and ZESCO management for maintaining power supply in the country despite the national deficit.

Dr Mumba said President Lungu and the ZESCO management have effectively managed the power crisis.

He has however, called for massive investment in the power sector to maintain normal electricity supply in the country.

    • ”Doctor” Cosmo Mumba, the long-time PF clown who claims to be a politician; this chap used to survive on money from the late Michael Sata. Now he wants to attract Lungu’s attention; Zambian politics do not need parasites like Cosmo Mumba.

  1. Cozmo, where were you when your MP was representing you in Parley? When the Technical Committee was sitting? When the Provincial assemblies were sitting?

  2. Mr Mumba just join PF don’t hide in the opposition. What credit can we give Zesco? Tarifs have been hiked, inflation at over 21.1%, job losses order of the day, tribal talk every hour, banks have stopped lending loans, president Lungu annual balling every week with prostitutes, voilence deep rooted in pf, prices of essential goods beyond common man, the list is endless. Shame with your sponsored masters.

  3. Mr Cosmos what are you fearing? the ECZ has already announced its readiness to handle the re-run in case no one attains 50+1 votes. i thought the rulling party should be the one to fear the clause and not you. ECL must sign to show them that is not a coward presdent and can stil win 2016 elections.

  4. @ Jano, … Assenting to the Constitution makes someone the ‘greatest President ever’? You and a good number of Zambians, it seems, are very easy to please – might I add, to deceive as well. That is why we are where we are. That is not the President’s Constitution and eventually, procedurally he can still be compelled to assent to it.

  5. Cosmo Mumba needs his head examined! And how has ECL and ZESCO management managed the power crisis? Some people are sad, trying to please the govt of the day by saying untruths. Does Cosmo want a job?

  6. ‘Dr’ Cosmo Chifentelo Mumba, Le’ Generale’ wa zabanga Miyanda, Jameson kadansa Chagwa-Kaale in the same basket? How gratifying.

  7. “Dr Mumba signed a cheque of 30 thousand Kwacha as nomination fee for his candidature at the convention”. What rubbish is this? Anyone with a cheque book can sign one.

  8. No wonder the political circus never end in Zambia..! Where were these so called political leader when the draft constitution was in circulation?
