A 28-YEAR-OLD Chisamba polygamist has been jailed for five years by the Kabwe High Court for killing his pregnant wife last year.
Judge-in-charge Dominic Sichinga slapped the sentence on Regan Moonga yesterday after he pleaded guilty to manslaughter.
In mitigation, Moonga told the court that he had suffered great loss following the death of his wife and was remorseful for his actions.
“I have a wife and two children, and one dependent under my care. I am asking the court to forgive me and give me a second chance so that I can contribute positively to society,” he said.
Particulars of the offence are that Moonga caused the death of Dainess Banda on January 2, 2015, in Chisamba.
Ms Banda, who was Moonga’s second wife, died a day after she was beaten and injured by her husband after he returned home drunk.
The incident happened after the two picked a quarrel on New Year’s Day and Moonga started kicking and punching his wife. The wife, who was seven months pregnant, sustained injuries during the fight and she died the following day.
Mr Justice Sichinga told Moonga that it was unfortunate that he caused the death of his wife.
“The death of your wife will haunt you for the rest of your life,” Mr Justice Sichinga said, “That is punishment enough, and in exercising my leniency, I will sentence you to five years imprisonment with hard labour.”

    • It’s better to be led by a polygamist than an unrepentant thief. Thieves have put us in a $10 billion debt trap with nothing to show for (roads with thin coats of tar paint? ).

  1. Comment: Ichi Chigananga chikuyenera kukhala ku Ndende moyo wake onse, Tumakhothi tamuja mwathu mu Zambia natonso takhuta Kachasu, 5years only Imprisonment for murder, Chisoni ku Matenda Kuja ku Maliro kumakhala Nkhani

  2. Compare this sentence comitted by this murderer and the sentence General Kanene was given for the defilement case and the useless NGOCC & other lobby groups are quite and happy with the murder sentence and still want General Kanene to go finish sentence for which he was pardoned…

  3. The wife was 7 months pregnant and yet no mention of what happened to the baby. If the baby died as result of this crime, then it is double murder and he should be convicted for the baby’s death as well. 5 years is too little for such a crime. I sure hope the baby did not die.

  4. Very sad story indeed. court sentences are not fair at times. Poor farmer grows mbanje he gets10years, kanene does a mwambo on a minor 17 years, a murderer gets five years! Atase! I am told a certain lawyer ate a clients ma ngwee he is “state of the head” of a province called mbiaza. Dziko ilu

  5. INJUSTICE MU CHALO MWEBANTU,THIS MAN HAS BEEN SENTENCED 5YRS FOR MURDER OR MANSLAUGTHER,WHILE MY SON A FOOTBALLER IS SERVING 15YRS IN KABWE MAXMUM PRISON FOR INDECENT ASSAULT . SO AM APPEALING TO RELEVANT AUTHOURITIES TO HELP.

  6. These guys where they come from, have a serious temper problem…How do you beat your friend to death..The judge in charge was also a joker and a big fool…Child defilement is 25year and above, murder ba judge in charge it was supposed to be 45years imprisonment with hard labour or even life imprisonment.
