United Party for National Development (UPND) President Hakainde Hichilema, who accompanied his Vice President Godfrey Mwamba to Woodlands Police station this morning, was teargassed by the police offices together with other senior party officials that included Vice-President Dr. Canisius Banda, several MPs, and supporters that went to offer solidarity.

GBM, whose interrogation lasted for over 3 hours, has been detained at Woodlands Police station and was scheduled to appear in court later this afternoon.

In the course of the interrogations the police wanted to take GBM for a search at his Luanshya road premises where some UPND youths were picked up and arrested for unlawful training.

But the lawyers insisted that they could not allow their client to have his premises searched because they have been under police security and guard since Saturday.

Speaking shortly after escorting his Vice-President for Administration to the holding cells, Mr. Hichilema described the action as suppression of human rights.

Mr. Hichilema has since appealed to all UPND members and sympathisers to remain calm as the UPND is a peaceful party.

Police threw teargas canisters when the UPND President was still conferring with his lawyers outside the police station.

The UPND leadership and lawyers were conferring on how to quickly obtain a police bond for GBM.

Mr. Hichilema, who could hardly speak after inhaling teargas smoke, was heard describing the situation as unfortunate.

  1. This a failed country…Edgar is a failure and unfortunately his use of force will not help his rapidly dwindling fortunes. He is the worst president this country has had. I shudder to think this man is a lawyer!!

    • The only reason GBM is being victimised is bcz of the huge crowds he has been pulling wherever he went especially in the so called pf strongholds. PF failures have realised that the issue of qualification won’t work to bar GBM from standing and hence this ploy to slump him with a court charge which would see him not stand as VP to HH. To Chagwa., GBM is seen to be a bigger threat, actually a threat more than HH himself due to the damage he causes in the pf strongholds, but what they do not realise is that they will simply end up making the man even more popular as their ploy will soon badly backfire.

    • Evev in America people are teargased for very trivial issues. A policeman kills an inocent black American and the police goes to supress demos. Dont pretend that our police are the worst just bcoz u are in the USA or Britain. Infact if you are in USA try to play loud music just now as u are reading my posting and u will see how the police will handle. you in the next 10 minutes. you will regret having gone there for greener pasture. We have been there. There is nothing so special abt their democracy. It stinks. Iam better of pa Zed.

    • Pa Zed u are free to move in street but not in USA. you will be arrested or be suspected and police will be called. recently an Indian old man was manhandled by the police in the USA for taking a walk.its like being in prison. Pa Zed we mingle with our neighbors. Enjoy parting with our families in home without being visited by the police. We walk any where at any time. Pa Zed pena ni super as long as you are not insulting your leaders or training militias

    • “Mr. Hichilema has since appealed to all UPND members and sympathisers to remain calm as the UPND is a peaceful party.”
THIS IS A SERIOUS JOKE- UPND A PEACEFUL PARTY. ANISEKESA. WHAT WERE ALL THESE VILLAGE BUMPKINS DOING AT POLICE STN? AND DID GBM THINK HE’S ABOVE THE LAW? IF GBM IS TRULY FROM THE ROYAL FAMILY, THEN, HE’S JUST EMBARRASSING THE ESTABLISHMENT. AS A PRINCE OR WHATEVER HE WOULD LIKE TO BE CALLED GBM SHOULD BE HUMBLE AS HIS GRAND FATHER CHITIMUKULU. IS IT DUE TO LACK OF EDUCATION THAT HE DOESN’T SEE ALL THESE ISSUES?

    • Aba ama guys fipuba sana!! How on God’s earth are you going to be escorting someone to the police stations as if you are also charged???????!!!!! On top of that, you have a group of militia already detained with:

      Exhibit A – Pangas
      Exhibit B – 8 Rounds of amno
      Exhibit C – Military gears
      Exhibit D – A Gun

All these are shameful things and the whole lot of an aspiring President calls his teargasing unfortunate???!!! First of all, wrong place, wrong timing … second of all, He who comes into equity must come with clean hands … all of you bastards have dirty hands.

I have been asking ECL to revoke POA, I now repent!! Keep the damn law in place!!!

    • In America HH and all his minions would have been locked up for a Class B misdemeanor called “Interfering with police duty”. Ubu ebututu bane … teargas them some more and keep the stupid law in place due to these stupid leaders.

Once we retire stupid leaders like these we can then repeal POA so that the smart people of the Zambian Enterprise can enjoy their liberties. I can see that the problem is not with the smart people themselves, the law is to curb fool1sh leaders like HH, GBM and the like.

Just for the record, the more negative votes, I get on my comments the better I feel about them as most UPND Id!ots can’t handle the truth!!!

    • This is a sign that these guys have already lost the election nomba balefyaya ukufilila mu nsenga!!

    • Lungu, when one is incompetent, there is nothing wrong for the to fail. Your excellence you are incompetent and have no vision as stated by you, hence just step aside and allow this country to remain peaceful with itself.

    • B R Mumba Sr., stop over rating self. Look at the language you are using, in itself shows that you have little substance to debate on. If POA is a bad law now, it means the ones depending on it or using it are bad too, next time try to be a bit wiser than this, though that is expecting too much from people of your standing.

  2. Zambia is the next Zimbabwe . Ba Lungu you have failed the Zambia economy , useless Kwacha , $15 billion dedit , load shedding , poor medical facilities , poor education .

    • @jacob,
you should have said, “at the rate upnd leaders are going, in terms of daring the law and its enforcers, tongas are potential refugees”. LOL!

  3. New word added to the ox ford dictionary
    WRUNGU ————– MEANING clueless,visionless,useless,brainless and a drunkard
    pronunciation as ——— LU–NGU.
IN KAZENIAN AS LUNGUSHA KALOBA CHAKOLWA.
IN JAY JAY ——— LAZY BUM.
WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT HH IS THE INCOMING PRESIDENT. VIVA HH VIVA UPND.

  4. This is way too primitive. I am fully persuaded now that an African is just an inferior species not capable of ruling himself. It was Uganda, now Zambia then etc. Shame on all police and those that give them instructions.

    • Violence begets violence, being unreasonable begets unreasonable, negative action begets negative reaction ad infinitum on these views, PF are purveyors of violence, being unreasonable, promoting all the negatives against peace between citizens as individuals in communities and opposition parties. President Lungu has all instruments of power to bring sanity to bear on how peace can reign over the nation but for lack of willingness and caring coupled with selfishness as he contemplates the humiliation of being the shortest reigning president he doesn’t want to man up! The opposition who have no access to powers vested in Lungu can not bear the blame when they react to provocation by PF actions which Lungu only needs to pull his pants up and take leadership! Whoever takes over from Lungu…

    • contd….. will also get the same criticism if they don’t step up. As citizens we should with level headedness open our eyes and see what is happening than rush to blaming those that have not had the benefit of using governance instruments to inculcate ubuntu! What is difficult for say police to use tact and advise those that escort their summoned leaders to police stations to be peaceful and maintain order as after interview the police would allow their leader to make a statement as to whether during the interview their might have been undue harassment! Moreover police must employ user friendly terminology as “report for interview” and not “questioning” and/or “interrogation!” Lungu can not be spared the brunt of criticism for we all know in the communities we have grown up in and…

    • contd….. and live that always the misdeeds of children are attributed to parental guidance and always referred to “Mwana wabacite!” The police are busy referring to Hon. Dr Mpombo’s son for criminality when its not Dr. Mpombo! Please let us as citizens move a step up in how we politick under a democratic system!

  5. tabalati no one is and will ever be above the law………………until proven innocent even the bond he has be given is actually not enough with a case of this magnitude……wat is 50pin compared to the security and harmony of this country……….th only gud thing is that hes not going to contest on any ticket…..gbm is a shame to the upnd hes a disgrace and he will make hh loose these elections, he has come from nowhere and u give him vice president surelyyyyyyyyyyyyy………..this guy has brot confusion and division in yo party……this is jst a friendly warning…….#ECL

    • Makasa are sure you understand what what you talking about? Are sure GBM has come from nowhere? If you memory was sharper than a goat you would have remembered that he was minister of defence number 3 in the nation to Michael sata and he resigned out of principle. You underestimated him at your own peril, and this is haunting you PFools.

    • @magaba ask any foreign coming from countries where you find militiamen, they will tell you HH and GBM have no militia, because if they had one, they wouldn’t let police humiliate them like that, just advise changwa to stop this militia talk, he is just scaring potential investors, Zambia needs investment real big.

  6. Why are the police campaigning for UPND? PF wake up and start thing correctly. Just a non partisan advise. Good lucky to all in August 2016 polls

  7. Are we in democrat country or dictatorship ?Looks Lungu is the next Mugabe of Africa . International countries are watching Lungu and soon Zambia won’t have any currency . That’s when poverty will be everywhere

  8. Just be specicific and say shame on WRUNGU—–MEANING: clueless, visionless, brainless, useless and a drunkard. Lungu the lawyer who used to swindle his client.

  9. Perhaps usage of tear gas in the police manual is interchangeable with rear gas. An easy mistake to make. They both stink.

  10. In U g a n d a a top female opposition leader was stripped naked while being arrested in broad daylight. Welcome to African jungle politics!!

  11. The only positive is, zambians should finally realise what THEIR 9-11 was…this is changing the zambian political psyche, just as 911 changed americans. Now you KNOW what MCS meant with “don’t tell them”, this country is de facto on the brink of civil war – MANY WARNED, dead ears !! When Kabimba sent 100s to Sudan, HH got a court-call; when our president takes one RGM as mentor, one that ridiculed our very own LPM, no one cries foul.
IT’S HIGH-NOON pa Zed – time for the small axe against the big-tree !!

  12. ZP GOOD WORK BUT NEXT TIME ARREST ON FRIDAY AND LET HIM APPEAR IN COURT ON MONDAY.HH & GBM IFYAMBA FILEMIFULUNGANYA

  13. So much Ado About Nothing! Let the guilty dance to their own whims and their supporter goons twist with envy!

  14. #Last kicks of a dying Chagwa!!
2016, Chagwa will surely fall, back to Chawama.
I’m NOT U.P.N.D, but I sympathize coz Chagwa & his Corrupt Party have ruined Zambia.

  15. Ba buju, Zelu Palibe! They teargas people out of excitement ..They are the ones who trigger violence even amidst peace ..Was there any threat or indication to teargas HH? There is a cost involved in purchasing those teargas canisters you are misusing.

  16. Ba buju, Zelu Palibe! They teargas people out of excitement ..They are the ones who trigger violence even amidst peace ..Was there any threat or indication to teargas HH? There is a cost involved in purchasing those teargas canisters you are misusing. THINK before you act.

  17. The police is not campaigning for upnd.WE NEED PEACE AND NOBODY IS ABOVE THE LAW!!GBM AND HH DARE THE POLICE OFTENLY!!SO BRAVO TO THE POLICE FOR CAGING THESE VIOLENT LEADERS!!PLUS UPND STOP PUTTING ALL YOUR HOPES IN GBM BCOZ US BEMBAS CANNOT FOLLOW THAT FAT MAN TO UPND-NEVER!!WE SHALL VOTE FOR OUR BELOVED PF IN LARGE NUMBERS!!!GO PF GO!!

    • @Eddy,
I think you are worse that ECL and you must be bin material.
Tell the ‘us Bemba’ to get lost. Zambia is going forward you faggot.

  18. In zambia the police are above the law, they arrest and teargas people at will, it happened to Nervous Mumba. . Anyway their days are numbered.

  19. I pity this HH guy. He just wants to force his way Into everything Sata went thru thinking that will make him president. Fortunes are different badaala. Daring the police just to look like a victim……nonsense

  20. THIS IS THE WORST GOVERNMENT AND WANTS TO BRING CHAOS IN THE PEACEFUL NATION. I THINK THERE MUST BE SOMETHING INTERESTING WHICH CHAGWA IS HIDING. ALL THE PLANS HAVE BEEN UNVEILED AND NO WAY WILL WE SEE PF AGAIN COMING INTO POWER BECAUSE THEY HAVE DE-CAMPAIGNED THEMSELVES.

  21. Worst country simply becoz HH who sold our companies was teargased? our police advised you not to go there but you wanted to challenge them. PF goes to chinese embasy you also want to go to USA embasy. The difference between sata and HH is that, sata was willingly suported while the other wants to force matters

  22. In Zambia we have educated illiterates. Lawlessness is called democracy. Who doesn’t know how GBM’s supporters and Wynter’s supporters clushed at the airport? Now that GBM is in opposition you want us to believe the man is not violent. Is this not the same man who is fond of beating his wife?

The UPND presidential adviser William Banda is known for political violence. UPND calls violence Mapatizya formular.

  23. I would imagine the revenge from who what soever will take over from PF. I pity PF leadership and their cadres. It might not be too soon but it will be sooner than later, and I pray that I live to see this.

  24. Why this desperation to go to state house by HH. HH is playing to the gallery and thinks the diplomats whom he invited for lunch to his house will help him win the elections.

  25. This was the work of UPND itself planting all sorts of offensive weapons at GBM’s premises so that he does not become HH’s running mate. Wapya munzi!!!!!

  26. The all lot of UPND top leadership some even absconded parliament to go and dare the police after being warned! They deserved the tear gassing because a normal aspiring presidetial candidate should have heed police advice but because they wanted cheap political capital out of it, they were treated with what they deserve, tear gas!

  27. I will cut Lungu into pieces. Most of you believe in democracy. I don’t and I don’t even want to know it. Mwila is saying he will ban sale of machetes but I have over 1000 all to use to cut Lungu and his girl-child girlfriend whom I know very well into pieces.

  28. From some comments you can tell that some bloggers seriously lack self esteem… we have a confidence problem as a country.

  29. Leadership without character is a as well as a dead leadership.People who aspire to lead others should be people with character. The best virtue every leader should have is intergrity.Without this virtue, ones character is impaired. It is an exercise in futility if you want to be a leader but morally you are bankrupt.A citizen of character will have respect for the laws of the land.A person with intergrity does not need laws of the land. His or her imprisonment,is the character on which he has built his or her morals.Leadership devoid of character is not worth being called leadership.People who are aspiring to be candidates should be people who are above reproach and are morally upright. One cannot claim to be a leader when his image is dented and is full of skeleton in the cupboard.

  30. Zambians let us remember that Zambia is the Christian nation and peace is our motto. My appeal to all Zambian Christians to come together and pray for peace and for our leaders who are in power and not in power that God may grant them wisdom and knowledge to rule this nation. Christians let me warn you about the dangers of supporting the party that causes confusion in the nation let us concentrate praying so that God can intervene.

  31. Police everywhere r above the law, GBM madunkunya is not above the law, HH is a true MumbwaMumbwa how on earth do u escort some one to the police station to be questioned, u r not his lawyer or relative. All what this power starving losers is trying to bring confusion in the country, shamboko should land on them

  32. The only reason why Sunny Hichilema went to the police station is because of desire for state house, he is knocking at every door that might seem to give him some publicity to win a sympathy vote. Unfortunately for him (Sunny), he is unlike the late Sata (MHSRIP) who had a solid grass root following. I have nothing against the so called GBM but what we need is not to politicise this alleged criminal activity, if violence breaks up as a result of illegal militia all Sunny’s cows will be killed and many people would lose their lives.

  33. Ukutumpa… When Sata was summoned on such rubbish charges (“terrorist” acts) all kinds of people attended Central Police such that police were even afraid to use teargas. Anyway it’s looking better than Nevers Mumba’s pretense of being “teargassed”, at least HH knows that you need to cry and use a cloth if you are claiming “teargas”, not simply run out of the building in Chipata frowning a bit while you look at your mobile phone
