A survey around the fishing camps in Kazungula has revealed that some women involved in trade have exchanged sex for fish.

A Media crew working on an International Center for Journalists(ICFJ)HIV Reporting project has found that the escalating HIV/AIDS infections around the fishing camps may be attributed to the sexual relations between some women involved in the fish trade and the fishermen.

At Highland Fishing camp which Borders Kazungula and Kasani Botswana, the crew interviewed 8 fishermen if they have had sexual relations with women who buy fish from them.Three men agreed to have had sexual partners in the trade while four of them denied while one refused to comment.

Highland Village Leader Mumbuna Mayangwa confirmed cases of extra-marital activities between Fishermen and female fish traders.
Mr Mayangwa urged the Zambian and Botswana Government to introduce HIV/AIDS preventive measures such as Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision facility as well as HIV counselling and testing.

Meanwhile a number of fishermen around the camp expressed unwillingness to undergo Circumcision. Kamayoyo, one of the fishermen said he fears he can lose income once circumcised because this would mean him staying home for a number of days.

Kamayoyo said some of his fellow fishermen feel discouraged to go for VMMC because of the pain associated with the surgical operation.

“Generally we men do not like pain especially if it has to do with sensitive parts like private organs and if you go round asking I am sure most men will tell you the same,”Kamayoyo said.

PEPFAR and World Health Organisation(WHO)have introduced a Device that replaces surgical operation during Circumcision known as PREPEX which
is still a Pilot Project in a number of priority countries including Zambia and Botswana.

In Zambia clinical trials to introduce PREPEX started in 2014.As opposed to the cutting of the foreskin using the surgical instrument,PREPEX is a ring that is placed on the foreskin to cut blood supply and later the foreskin drops of by itself.

  1. So when the skin drops on its own, where do you dispose of it if it happens in a crowded place with no public conveniences? or ninshi uli nabapongoshi mu bus?

    • You Chaps, these “Donors, rather DONUTS” come & cheat you about CIRCUMCISION, YET THEY ARE THE FIRST ONES TO CONDEMN “GENITAL MUTILATION” in women BUT IT SEEMS OK TO MUTILATE MALE GENITALIA??????? ASK THEM WHETHER THE HAVE INTRODUCED THE SAME PROGRAMME IN EUROPE OR USA – If Not , WHY DON’T YOU QUESTION THIS!!!

CONTINUE BEING GUINEA PIGS & GET WIPED OUT AS WELL!!

      CHOOSE WISELY!!!!!
      ALSO VOTE WISELY 11/8/2016!!!

      I thank you!!

    • Circumcision is not the answer to curbing HIV infections. Safe sex is! I understand these men’s fears, there’s no proper health care where they are. Giving them free condoms for now will be a better solution than urging them to be circumcised.

    • @Nubian… mmmmmmn?? A fisherman with condom in pocket, how and where? I am talking from experience. And those women traders when they are wet to rush to canoes they get so sexxxxy. It has always been a problem for women traders, especially at night when mosquitoes start biting… they become so vulnerable.

    • @JayJay,
PREPEX has already been shipped to Zambia. PF government has no choice but use if on its population. Imagine those dropping off in Parliament, and MPs had balls, that would be end of PREPEX in Zambia.

  2. Sex for fish is as old as prostitution. It is very common in fishing communities. I found the same system in Kenya.

    • This is not even a finding to me! This is what I have to say as a comment

he difference between scientific writing [this would have shown that there is an increase from 10% to 25% in the prevalence and also an increase in fish for sex from 35% to 65% or something like] , journalistic writing [ iIt had to be a catchy word – ESCALATING but from what to what] and plain English [Just say fishermen are having sex with the fish traders in exchange for fish]

  3. Is there female circumcission? if you dont allow females to be circumcissed why should men be? the parts cut of in the man are just as vital as those on the females.

    • Furthermore, 8 as a sample size is just ridiculous in relation to the conclusion of ESCALATING HIV. Noteworthy is the fact that those who said they do not engage were more that those who said they did. Someone is fishing for a justification here.

  5. Let’s try to make positive contributions or come up with better remedies. Why not make implementations such as do mandatory HIV/AIDS testing when women give birth or or when they go for their checkups when they are pregnant? If both men and women go for STD issues do a mandatory test. Have them sign a waiver saying they are agreeing to a test while tests are being done. If it is positive put them on a data base and have them start taking medication immediately. Should they infect another partner then we have proof. I am not sure what circumcision can do with preventing HIV/AIDS. Education, strategies and implementations can help save lives.

  6. If God the creator of mankind wanted us men to be without the foreskin, he could have done so. So why are we dancing to everything the muzungus say? Awe me, l shall keep mine thanks

  7. @Katongo boys, that’s the question I have also been asking. We have never heard of circumcision programs in Europe or America but they insist it is good for us…this is trash

  8. UPND members need to be circumcised for them to think properly and be able to see the development that PF is doing countrywide…….kikikikiki…..they talk and pretend like they have no eyes ! The song of change is only in their small heads while the rest of Zambia is calm.

  9. There is HIV in Western Europe and in America and they hide their statistics but they don’t talk about circumcision. Don’t believe everything you hear as gospel truth. CIRCUMCISION IS NOT A SILVER BULLET TO HIV. They experimented in East Africa on a handful of people only. The west just want more guinea pigs for further trial and sadly, there are always some in Africa.

  10. Male circumcision and female circumcision are incomparable na imwe. Do your research. Female circumcision means cutting off the entire clitoris so that the woman can have no pleasure. It is barbaric. Male circumcision only affects the foreskin. You can still enjoy sex. Male circumcision is very common in many parts of Africa long before the so/called donors or imperialists or whatever you wish to call them came around. If you are a man, you have a cjoice whether to get circumcised or not, but it should be a personal choice, not a campaign of ignorance to discourage others.
