Ex-Chipolopolo defender Billy Mwanza has backed under fire Green Buffaloes defender Adrian Chama after his uninspiring display when Zambia lost to Nigeria in a 2018 World Cup qualifier on October 9.
Chama has been criticized heavily by fans after his lapses gifted Nigeria goals when Zambia lost 2-1 at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.
In an interview in Kitwe, Mwanza said Chama remains a good player despite flopping against Nigeria.
The ex-Golden Arrows defender believes Chama deserves encouragement.
“You can’t judge a player in one game. Football is not about one game,” Mwanza said.
“He didn’t do well against Nigeria but we can’t throw him away. He is our player and needs encouragement,” he said.
Mwanza encouraged Chama to remain strong after being criticized heavily.
“He has to be strong. You know this is football and people talk a lot sometimes. He has to remain focused, work on his mistakes and be strong,” he said.
Mwanza supported coach Wedson Nyirenda’s decision to include Chama in his 24-member team of local players ahead of the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Cameroon on November 12.
“I think the coach did well to include him in the new squad. He is one of the best players we have in the league.”
