IT IS not only the shortage of burial space that is haunting Lusaka city, parking space is another issue.

With the registration of 100 vehicles a day on average, the existing parking space has become compromised in the central business district (CBD).

The acute shortage of parking space has been a thorny issue to not only motorists, but the local authority too.

The city local authority has engaged a private company Parkrite Zambia to help manage the parking space.
Though there has been speculation that the private company was offered the contract because it has links to a political party, Parkrite Zambia chief executive officer Withus Masunda said is not politically-inclined as perceived by some sections of the public.

Mr Masunda said the company underwent all the normal procedures like other competitors and was picked as the successful bidder.

“We had competitors and we applied through a public tender and we won the tender, it is a 60 percent Zambian-own company.

Our company has been registered in Zambia since 2011, we are looking to extrapolate our services in Zambia. We had no contract yet with any entity until October 2016 when we signed a contract with the LCC,” Mr Masunda said.

Mr Masunda said it is his organisation’s ambition to expand to other cities like Ndola, Kitwe and Livingstone.

Recently, the council announced the appointment of Parkrite Zambia Limited as a company which would manage the parking in the CBD with effect from October last year.

The decision to award the contract to Parkrite Zambia was reached at by a full council meeting.

In the memorandum of agreement (MoU), it was agreed that Parkrite Zambia would manage the parking system on behalf of LCC for an initial period of three months after which it would be reviewed.

There is a possibility of extension of 10 years after which all the parking management system, including infrastructure, would be handed over to LCC.

The parties further agreed that the Parkrite Zambia Limited shall manage, collect and enforce all parking fees and remit 40 percent of the parking proceeds to LCC after submission of all information to the Finance Department.

    • We never learn from the past for starters let’s restrict all vehicles over 5 years old from entering the country.
Secondly no more importation of left had vehicles.

    • The headline suggests a detailed review of the problem at hand… but the article is just an introduction of the “who, what and how” of an organisation never-before-heard-of.

    • Kakombwe: That is exactly what I was thinking about as well. Such levels of incompetence can not be allowed anymore. Parking is a very simple and straight forward issues. You mark the parking bays, employ parking assistance to collect the fees and buy metering and payment machines, simple. Honestly how do you get a group of Zimbabweans to do that for LCC? This is pure lack of seriousness from LCC. This company has found these roads already built and their level of Capital Outlay is extremely low but here is LCC giving away 60% of the income. That’s madness of the waste kind. These are decisions that give people like NEZ a lot of brains. Can this arrangement be reviewed and be done away with after three months. Let us be serious for once honestly. LCC has a huge task of handling the…

    • LCC has a huge task of blocked drainage and these fees can be used to finance the drainage problem. What on earth are these guys at LCC thinking. How do you hand over 60% of your income. Can we have people being serious with problems of Lusaka for once. What are all these Engineers at LCC doing with their qualifications. You fail to advise the Councilors or what? Come on guys let’s be serious with our country please. No one will keep Lusaka clean apart from LCC. This is very annoying to say least. Do away with this contract after three months and run the parking system yourselves and make your money to finance other equally pressing problems in Lusaka. I am very angry!

  1. LCC is full of boneheads! Giving away 60% is insane and if I were minister of local government, I would fire this council for its imbecility and mindlessness! These people do not deserve to be in our public SERVICE. Instead, they have become a public nuisance!

  2. Kikiki when we told you that pf has no vision especially under the illegal president lungu you thought we were lying. Look what is happening now. Corruption in awarding of contracts based on party loyalty and not performance. Pf and lungu must die for Zambia to be saved

  3. Lusaka can’t run out of parking space unless the city engineers have no imagination. There’s so much loafing space in Lusaka

  4. @NEZ:thats how bitter you guys in UPND are!!you have now reached an extent of wishing PF and president Lungu death?amazing!this is a taboo.how can you wish others death for HH to enter state house?Thank God,your evil wishes will only haunt your HH and upnd as God wont make him Republican president anytime soon!!!Look,HH or upnd are not our seviour because all they want is power to come and enrich himself and fulfill his ego.when Obama became the first black president of America, africans were very excited but what did Obama do for us Africans?NOTHING!!!ONLY JESUS CHRIST IS OUR SEVIOUR AND NOT ANY HUMAN BEING!!!TELL HH TO WAIT FOR 2099 BECAUSE EVEN IN 2021,MANY OF US WILL VOTE FOR PF BECAUSE HH IS NEVER AN OPTION!!!

    • Kikiki to me it seems like pf is your god because no matter how much suffering you endure and your family under pf you are too proud and stubborn for nothing to continue voting the same dogs. Doing the same thing and expecting different results is called madness. If anything you might be right that the solution is not natural death of useless leaders like lungu but maybe the death of people like you who vote them in will be better solution. Silly pillock

  5. Yet the silly Mayor is in the US in a small town down on his kneels begging for left hand drive Fire trucks and ambulances instead of seeking technical assistance for the town planning dept. They say all its free and sponsored what a bunch of lazy empty tins… Go to other countries and that registering of 100 cars a day is a mere drop in in the ocean.

  6. This is exactly what Davis Mwila said. Parkrite is a PF fundraiser! How does a normal Municipal struggling to pay its workers afford to give away 60% revenue? Something is not adding up. This was a hijack!

  7. Can any thing sensible come from visionless Lungu with his corrupt PF thugs?
Car parking management is a council matter that can boost bankrupt councils in the country. To own a car is not cheap as Zambians think. Parking anywhere other than at your house or garage will attract payment.
