The Zambia Meteorological Department has warned of more flash floods and heavy fall in North-western, Central, Copperbelt and Lusaka Provinces.

So far more than 360 houses have collapsed in Kabwe and a further 100 in Choma following heavy rain that has left hundreds of families homeless and in dire need of emergency aid.

The department said that during period from February 7 to 8, the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) would continue oscillating about the southern parts of Zambia and the high pressure system over Luapula, Northern, and Muchinga Provinces which would see the reduction in rainfall activities over much of eastern half of Zambia.

The department said that From February 9 to 12, a high pressure system from the South East coast of South Africa would be pushing northwards weakening and moving the ITCZ to the central parts of Zambia allowing relatively moist and stable airflow from the southeast to affect much of southern half reducing rainfall activities.

“ By 13th February, 2017, the High pressure System will drift further south east, this will tend to strengthen and move the ITCZ to the south allowing moist and unstable Congo airflow to cover much of the Country,”the department said.

From yesterday to today Eastern, Muchinga, Northern, Luapula and Eastern districts of Central Province was expected to be partly cloudy to cloudy with a chance of morning rain, afternoon showers and thunderstorms in few places while the rest of Zambia would be cloudy with morning rain, afternoon thundershowers in places coupled with night rain and thunder in places.

The department stated that on February 9 to 12 Western, Southern, Lusaka and western districts of Central Provinces would be partly cloudy to cloudy with a chance of light morning rain, afternoon showers and thunderstorms in few places.

“Muchinga, Northern and the southern districts of Western and Southern Province will be partly cloudy to cloudy with a chance of morning rain and afternoon showers and thunderstorms in few places,” it stated.

    • The silence on Kariba water levels is so deafening its hurting my ears. Next Zesco will tell us load-shedding is due to army worms eating power poles and cables. Zambia is a disgrace.

    • To follow the rising water levels please go to the Zambezi River Authority website. The rising levels are recorded every two days now and according to the site as 5th February 2017 the dam was 7 – 8 weeks ahead over the expected water levels at this time of the year.

The Kariba dam picks in the months of June/July with the arrival of water from the flood plains in the upper Zambezi river.

    • Journalists are just lazy the Kariba levels are more than good enough kindly refer to link that is why they are silent about it ………….The Kariba Lake was created and designed to operate between levels 475.50m and 488.50m with 0.70m freeboard at all times. The Lake level rose by 0.29m during the week under review due to rainfall activities around the lake and closed the week at 478.89m on 3rd February 2017. Last year on the same date, the Lake level was 477.21m.. http://www.zaraho.org.zm/hydrology/lake-levels

  1. God is good, very good. He has given us abundant rains this year.Loadshedding must come to an end immediately. No more excuses

  2. That is good news, Let it rain was our pray last year. So please don’t complain when it floods. we need zesco remember.

  3. ZAMBIA MUST FIND A NEW AND ALMOST EMPTY ON WHICH TO CONSTRUCT A NEW CAPITAL CITY AND THIS TIME AROUND WITH PROPER PLANNING. NUMEROUS TIMES WE HAVE HEARD THE U.S.A. PUMPING HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS US$DOLLARS FOR SANITATION, WATER RETICULATION AND DRAINAGE BUT TO NO REALISATION OF ANY IMPROVEMENT OF THE ABOVE MENTIONED. LUSAKA HAS NEVER BEEN PLANNED AT ALL. THINGS JUST MUSHROOM. I HAVE NEVER SEEN A CITY WITH A MOTORWAY CUTTING THROUGH THE CITY. THAT IS A SIGNED OF UNPLANNED CITY/TOWN. SAME THING APPLIES TO DRAINAGE. WE CAN’T BE SPENDING EVERY BEGGED MONEY ON LUSAKA ONLY. FIND ANOTHER PLACE FOR A NEW CITY.

    • There’s absolutely no need for a new site. Cities like Shanghai, Cairo and London have been there for over 1,000 years. Cities have to be re-engineered for larger populations every so often to meet transportation, food logistics, water reticulation, sewage disposal, burial purposes etc. It is lack of political leadership that leads to a govt blowing away $9.3bn and they have nothing to show for it. Now they want to spend, $2bn on a rail line between Eastern and Muchinga Provinces without any goods to be transported on it.

  4. This is good news..we are only interested in loadshedding and water levels in the dam – no more lies.
We Zambians recieve all this heavy downfall yet we lack clean water and irreggation water in 3 months.
If i was in govt i would encourage water harvesting to underground domestic tanks.for laundry, toilet usage in the dry periods.

  5. Guess work abena Nkomoki and clue, that aside Zesco should reduce loadshedding by 2 hours even 30 minutes actually. By the way, why is it that other rural towns are not experiencing load-shading while Lusaka is heavily loadshaded? Bushe priority taifwile ukuba ukuli production like Lusaka, CB and Lumwana/Kalumbila? Do something ba Zesco

  6. Zesco, is the worst organisation to ever exist. A friend in Roma has no power since yesterday midday and its now 20hrs the following day. With no word from Zesco.
