Zambia stun Germany to reach U20 WC milestone

Share

Zambia have reached their debut FIFA U20 World Cup quarterfinals following a dramatic 4-3 win over Germany in Jeju on Wednesday.

But Zambia had to dig deep to earn their quarterfinal spot against the 1981 winners thanks an extra-time goal from Zesco United defender Shemmy Mayembe after the two sides finished 3-3 at full-time.

It was Mayembe’s first international goal for both club and country for the right back who got his big break under George Lwandamina at Zesco Last season.

But Zambia have had to rally twice to stay in the game and later to clinch their historic last 8 spot.

Germany took the lead in the 37th minute through Philipp Ochs who whipped in a breathtaking free kick to give them a 1-0 halftime lead.

Emmanuel Banda crushed in one of his trademark volleys in the 50th minute before Fashion Sakala hammered Zambia into the lead from an acute angle in the 68th minute.

Sakala’s goal finally saw him break Bernard Makufi’s 17 year old two goal record set at the 1999 tournament in Nigeria where Zambia made its debut but exited at the group stage.

Enock Mwepu poked in the third in the 86th minute before Zambia lost it at the back.

Suat Serder sneak in one in the 89th minute to narrow Zambians lead before Jonas Arweiler equalised four minutes deep into stoppage time.

However, Mayembe made sure of Zambia’s Passage in the 107th minute after a well-worked move involving Mwepu,Fashion and Daka

Zambia now await winner of Thursdays last 16 date between France and Italy whom they face on June 5 in Suwon.

Meanwhile, Zambia have gone one better than in their second appearance at Canada 2007 where they made a last 16 exit at the hands of Nigeria.

  1. Why does this matter?

So you kick a piece of rug moulded in a circle and you have talent?

Why are people excited here, will this put food on your table?

SO what is wrong with you, if you love your country, show allegiance first to President Lungu

President Lungu deserve Love , not these people representing you, who have no formal education.

    Ridiculous

    Do I make myself clear?

    Thanks

  2. Hh must learn something this outcome. Germany has accepted defeat and congratulated Zambia and we expect hh and UPND to accept defeat to President Lungu and PF

    • The boys have just shown us the Power of Prayer. Before they start the game they pray, after they score they thank the Lord & they do so @ the end of the game. God will never let down anyone on His side. As Zambians let us learn from these young people the need to put everything in Christ. We’ve already made an important step in declaring ourselves a Christian Nation. We must now adopt Christianity as a lifestyle. If we do nothing formed against us will ever stop us. God Bless Zambia!

    • @3.1 YOU ARE RIGHT THAT WE CAN LEARN FROM THESE YOUNG MEN. BUT THERE ARE A LOT OF THINGS GONE WRONG WITH PREACHING NOWADAYS. NOWADAYS, PREACHING IS ABOUT PERFORMING MIRACLES (MAGIC, SUPERSTITION OR WICHCRAFT). THE BOYS, WHILE, ACKNOWLEDGING THE EXISTENCE OF JEHOVAH GOD AND ASKING FOR HIS HELP- THEY TOO, PREPARED THOROUGHLY AND PLAYED HARD ENOUGH TO WIN.

  3. Lusaka Times, your creation “Mushota” is increasingly becoming a public nuisance! Her myopia is making her, or should I say YOU, irrelevant. Rebrand “Mushota” for her to provoke public debate/discussion (as you had created her for) in a civilized/objective manner.

  4. IT IS VERY NICE THAT ZAMBIA IS PROGRESSING WELL BY BEATING BIG TEAMS AT U20 WORLD CUP FOOTBALL. HOWEVER, I WOULD LIKE TO AIR MY GRIEVANCE OVER THE COMMENTS MADE BY ONE OF THE COMMENTENTORS FOR THE MATCH BETWEEN ZAMBIA AND GERMANY TODAY. THE COMMENTATOR SAID “GERMANY IS PLAYING A TEAM FROM ZAMBIA WHICH IS ONE OF MOST POVERTY STRICKEN COUNTRY IN AFRICA WITH THE HIGHEST HIV PREVALENCE RATE”. I APPEAL TO FAZ TO LAUCH A COMPLAINT FIFA WITH THE REGARD TO THE COMMENTS MADE BY THIS COMMENTATOR AIRED ON SUPERSPORT CHANNEL. THE ACTUAL WORDS HE SAID WILL BE FOUND IN THE RECORDING. FAZ SHOULD DEMAND THAT THIS COMMENTATOR BE BANNISHED FROM ALL FUTURE FOOTBALL COMMENTRIES FOR LIFE – STARTING TODAY.
WE DO NOT DENY THE FACT THAT WE ARE POOR, NEITHER DO WE DENY THAT WE HAVE HIV; BUT SUCH ISSUES SHOULD…

    • So that’s what that commentator fag said, I heard the hiv part but couldn’t hear well the other part of the comment. Should it also be fine to say ” Zambia is playing a team from Germany which is one of the wealthy countries in Europe which killed so many Jews”

    • If what he stated are facts why be upset about it? Instead find a way of changing that perception in reality with workable solutions. Political correctness is a time waster for all you look for are things that are upsetting and trying to be holier than thou. He said many good things about Zambia by the way why have you ignored those. As a people we will have differing opinions but living with that is what matters as long as it’s not criminal. I am Zambian just in case….

  5. mushota does say good things sometimes but when are you all going to realize mushota is a white man!

  6. Football game is like politics. The winners are declared by the referee indisputably. Imagine what it would be like if the losing team refuse to accept defeat later on deny to recognise the reigning champs. Some zealots here should learn two things.
    1. Accept defeat because in a competition there are a number of issues beyong imagination.
    2. Congratulate the winners whether happy or not. Its just simple like having xex.

  7. An almighty battle, a stern test of endurance, stamina and all the things the weak are better off staying away from. What a build of character! What a heart stopper! The neutrals heaven, the inclineds poison. What a game! #chipolopolo!

  8. These boys never say die. I love that one strength about them. Whether the opponent scores first they just dont let it affect them. What a wonderful attitude!

  9. At least here is something to talk about as we enjoy the evening meal. These boys are simply fantastic and many kudos to the COACH.

  10. But Zambia have had to rally twice to stay in the game………

LT the above statement means Zambia came from behind twice. It’s misleading the public!

  11. C-General, we heard similar comments from the commentator in 2007. I don’t understand why these jealousy whites think about Africa. They always think they are superior to Africans. The ***** cannot even imagin what English Premier league would be like without African players like Toure, Drogba, etc.

  12. Hear this from the German Bild Boulevard Zeitung (newspaper) just released this evening: “Zambia is the team with the most effective play of the tournament”.

  13. NO Hate talk please we all have won as Zambians. AT LEAST Fooball brings us together unless one is insane

  14. The boys are good. But I think the coach need more tact. He seems to play the same game despite the score line. When Zambia was 3-1 he should have killed the Germany game. But his boys were playing in the same manner. Otherwise well done Chambeshi.

    • no it was deliberate, the coach wanted a lot exposure for the boys, so that they are ready for the finals, in case in the finals we go for extra time, so he allowed the boys have more playing time. do not worry

  15. The commentator was right. Zambia is poor due to bad policies by ECL and his minions. HIV is all over, you cant deny this imbwa iwe

  16. This game wil just leave it in Gods hands coz game its win and loose, and ba mushota learn to be pround with yo country weather we win or loose its by Gods wishes, thnx.

  17. As a Zambian i dnt care whethr we ar poor…God is th God 4 all… Evn if we poor as long as we live happy…And it doesnt affect us coz we all th same who wil lough who? We all zambians

  18. Well done boys once again! Please Coach Chambeshi work on our defence they seem to be conceding goals easily. God bless Zambia!

  19. Well some commentators are biased just be proud of what u are guys .Africa must stick together pray for our boys to clinch the cup.nothing is impossible if God is on our side. .unity is the passage.

  20. kkkkkkkkkk.@ Dr Mushota you must have grown a very humble life back in Zambia. You are such a bitter person. @Dr level you still feel that way. How can football bring food on your table? that is entertainment after you have eaten your food on the table then you go to watch. It puts food on the table of the players as we pay for the entertainment dear. No body can understand the kind of bitterness. I am only happy for you to support ECL.

  21. Don’t worry about the phoolish commentator and concentrate on our game. We poor partly because we have failed to develop a thick skin to such nonsense.

  22. Why even get angry about what the commentator said about Zambia, is it not what you have been portraying to the outside world on online, twitter etc. that commentator has never been here if he had been he wouldn’t have said that but because of you who thinks by bad mouthing your country you are champions, those are the results my fellow Zambians learn to protect our country no matter how one may annoy.
Congratulations boys and the entire group not forgetting Mr. Chambeshi.

  23. God bless Zambia and Africa at Large!. Congraaaaaaa Junior chipolopolo! Let all thy negatives about our country’s status build us all Spiritually, for God always lifts up his people!.so be ready to be criticized and we say thank God for this lovely country and all that we have.remember that thy greatest cardinal thing in life is peace. Very proud Zambian!.
