The Daily Nation reports that UPND vice-president for administration Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba has been evacuated for medical treatment at an undisclosed facility in South Africa.

Family members yesterday confirmed that Mr. Mwamba who was taken ill last week was first admitted and treated at CFB medical centre in Lusaka, but his condition did not improve and doctors recommended his evacuation.

He was subsequently flown to South Africa where he is admitted at a private hospital. Family members who could not immediately accompany him at the point of evacuation have since travelled.

According to sources in South Africa, Mr Mwamba was at a private facility in Johannesburg for treatment for an unspecified condition.

Yesterday the Luanshya Magistrates court was forced to adjourn a case in which Mr. Mwamba and his President, Mr. Hakainde Hichilema have been jointly charged on three counts of seditious practices and unlawful assembly.

Mr. Hichilema also failed to attend the trial because he was reported to be receiving medical attention at Lusaka Trust Hospital and was declared medically unfit for any activity.

This came to light yesterday after Mr Mwamba failed to show up at the Luanshya Magistrate Court where he was scheduled to appear with Mr Hichilema on three counts of seditious practices and unlawful assembly contrary to the laws of Zambia.

When the matter came up for continued trial and defence yesterday, their lawyer, Mr Mulilo Kabesha presented two medical reports as part of evidence.

Mr Kabesha informed the court that the first accused person, Hichilema was receiving medical attention at Lusaka Trust Hospital and was declared medically unfit for any activity while his co-accused was reportedly in South Africa for undisclosed illness.

“We regret the absence of the accused persons in the case before this court as they are indisposed. First accused person is unwell and has been given five days bed rest from 24th August, 2017. I wish to submit the original slip from the hospital.”

“And the second accused Mwamba, has been unwell. He was initially admitted to CFB Medical Centre in Lusaka. There is also a sick note we wish to submit before the court which indicate that he is medically unfit for work from 24th August, 2017.

“Your honour we have information that the condition of the accused is not improving and has since been taken out of the country for medical treatment. I got the information from the other defence lawyer, Mr Tom Shamakamba, who was contacted.

“We tender the two sick notes for the two as part of evidence of their indisposition,” Mr Kabesha said.

He then applied for an adjournment. The State, represented by Deputy chief state advocate Chipola Bako did not object to the application admitting that they had been furnished with the sick notes prior to the court sitting.

Mr Bako proposed to the court that the matter be adjourned to 18th September, 2017 for continued trial.

Ruling over the application, Ndola Chief Resident Magistrate sitting in Luanshya John Mbuzi granted the application and extended bail for the two accused persons.

In count one and two, Hichilema and Mwamba were charged individually with seditious practices contrary to the laws of Zambia.

In count three, the two were jointly charged with unlawful assembly contrary to section 75 as read with section 74 of the penal code and regulation of the Public Order Act.

Particulars are that Hichilema, 54, of house number 14/38 Sable Road, Kabulonga on September, 26, in Mpongwe did conspire with others unknown to bring into hatred, incite violence, resistance, and disobedience to the administration of the elected Government of Zambia by uttering words namely ” nga taba mufumishe Matambo, epo ulubuli lwalatampila.

In count two Mwamba, 57, of house number 10 Roan Road, Kabulonga, was charged with seditious practices.

It is alleged that on September, 26, in Mpongwe, Mwamba conspired with others unknown to bring into hatred, incite violence, resistance, and disobedience to the administration of the elected Government of Zambia by uttering words namely “ifwe pano ngaba UPND tufwile twakana iyi Government yakwa Lungu; ngabamyeba ati kuli ama meeting yaba Lungu mulekana, pantu president wesu ni HH.”

In count three the duo were charged with unlawful assembly.

It is alleged that on September, 26, in Mpongwe being in a public place and while acting together with others unknown did convene, assemble unlawfully with intent to carry out some common purpose without notifying the regulating officer.

  1. In Zambia change will only come when words are not only spoken but also adhered to. why seek for medical attention outside the your country?

    • “Family members yesterday confirmed that Mr. Mwamba who was taken ill last week was first admitted and treated at CFB medical centre in Lusaka, but his condition did not improve and doctors recommended his evacuation.”
Bwana Clifford, he was evacuated on the advice of the Doctors who may well have surmised that the country did not have the expertise or other resources required to stem GBM’s ailment.

    • @ Clifford Bwalya I would direct that question to those in government who seek treatment outside Zambia using taxpayers money when they are the ones holding instruments of power to effect the change desired! I have no problems with private citizens and others using own resources to seek treatment wherever because as @ Bellarmine Chatunga the Zambian government has failed to invest in quality medical facilities! Only KK, may God keep blessing him, tried at improving health facilities and never at any time did he seek medical treatment let alone health checks abroad an act which instilled faith in his quest to develop home facilities for every citizen! Can some journalists speak for the silent majority to ask the president or those cabinet officials the next time they return from treatment…

    • contd…. or medical check abroad as they alight from the plane, why they are using national resources to seek health attention in other countries and can not instead invest in quality national health facilities!

    • South African Health Minister, Aaron Motsoaledi has criticised African leaders for seeking medical treatment abroad.
“I have said this before and I will say it again: we are the only continent that has its leaders seeking medical services outside the continent, outside our territory. We must be ashamed of that. This is called health tourism. We must promote our own.”

In the past year, five African Presidents have gone overseas for medical treatment, including Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari, Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe, Benin’s President Patrice Talon, Angola’s President Jose Eduardo dos Santos and Algeria’s President Abdelaziz Bouteflika.

    • Why does Lungu seek medical attention abroad and yet he is in charge of running the country. When this question is fully answered thats when any one can ask why an opposition leader seeks medical attention abroad .

  2. Too bad. We wish you a quick recovery, you entertain us in political cycles. We miss your English and arguments. Wish you a fast recovery so that you attend to pending court cases

  3. GBM is a coward. He shunned todays prayers fearung that Mwami 1 would change his mind and bundle him up. Surely is this the clown that threatened to go for Edgar’s throat ? UPNDonkeys should just accept that GBM is a non-entity.

    • Your comment is unnecessary and f…lish. Sickness and death will happen to all. Even though I do not approve of all that GBM and other politicians do, I wish him a quick recovery.

  4. Please you so called journalists, peruse the word ‘Evacuate’ and learn to apply it appropriately, will you please? This is embarrassing.

  5. @Thorn in the flesh , Was Willie Nsanda a DEAR to u explain how your dearship was cos. he was a thug left bundles of money in his house we still need evidence from people that were DEAR to him.

  6. I DOUBT TONGAS ARE HAPPY WITH GBMS ASCENDANCE TO VP IN THEIR TRIBAL PARTY , THESE ARE BAD SIGNS COULD BE TONGAS WORKING ON HIM, JUST COME BACK TO PF GBM IN PF U NEVER USED TO BE SICK BUT WHY IN UPND ALSO IN PF YOU WERE SO STRONG THAT U COULD EVEN BEAT YOUR WIFE BUT NOW WE NO LONGER HEAR THOSE ASSAULT CASES

  7. Ati ,”….medically unfit for work from 24th August, 2017.” I didnt know attending a court session is a lot of work until today when a planned sickness was accepted by the court. Let them explain why they want to cause confusion in Zambia. I am sure they cannot attend because they do not recognise that there is a president in Zambia.
    Pathetic!

  8. The sick person not fit for any activity was at the cathedral announcing in threesome ‘we have forgiven and we have forgotten”

  9. Too bad to both gbm and hh as they are leading opposition party. Sometimes, when you are comfortable in life the best is to focus on wise lifestyle and serving God.because political lifestyle is like a polygamist man. It’s really difficult to serve and lead a humanbeings unless God’s divine hand is provided so the case of gbm and hh definitely sickness will not leave them. If not applying wisdom well especially on issues to do with politics their heathy may deteriorate to ground zero.citizens have a responsibility to choose and elect leaders therefore politics shouldn’t be imposed to people by force or nuances like our modern opposition leaders because it’s like amounting life problems and chasing after wind. They better reduce their political ambitions otherwise they sickness will…

  10. God bless you and get better sooner. The hose power has reduced with your absence. We need you guys to keep pushing this Government to do the right things most of the time. Without your presence in the political arena the party in power could go to sleep.
