Police in Lusaka have dispelled reports suggesting that a woman purported to be from Serenje district of Central Province, crash landed in Garden Compound of Lusaka district, yesterday.

Zambia Police Spokesperson Esther Katongo stated in a statement issued to ZANIS that the woman in question is not a wizard.

Ms Katongo explained that the suspect stays with her daughter in Lusaka’s Northmead area, and has a history of occasional memory losses.

She said the woman normally wanders about after sneaking out from home and police are usually at hand to take her home.

Ms Katongo said officers at Central Police know her residence and that relatives of the said woman have since been notified.

In the early hours of Sunday October 08 2017, a resident of Garden Compound Rose Mumba, in the company of her neighbour Prospelina Mwelwa, discovered the said woman in her yard around 03:00 hours, despite her premises being locked.

Quick action by G4 security officers who were in the area, saved the woman from mob justice and rushed her to Garden Police Post.

  1. In Zambia everything is blamed on witchcraft. If you are a failure, then it’s the witches fault. If you are prospering, then you are the witch. We give too much credit to the devil.

  2. In a country that calls itself christian people are so obsessed with witchcraft!
And those silly relatives keep an eye on the old lady next time it may be a different story!

    • The Pentecostal movement is sadly in the fore front of driving the absolute beliefs in witchcraft as a quick way to get into their followers pockets. The average pente mentions Satan, demons and witchcraft more than they mention the holy trinity. Sad

    • While I agree that moderation is important, it is only logical that for one to be a Christian and believe in the existence of the Holy Spirit, then you must acknowledge the existence of evil and related bad spirits including witchcraft. You can not believe in one and not the other.

  3. It’s sad that instead of being proud of our elders we despise them. AIDS is killing the young folk and they want to blame it on the old people.

  4. SO MANY ILLITERATES IN THIS COUNTRY….EVERYTHING IS WIT-CRAFT…ANYWAY, ITS THE FEW EDUCATED PEOPLE TO BLAME, FOR THEIR FAILURE TO EXPLAIN SUCH SIMPLE MEDICAL ISSUES..

  5. We Africans are so ready for black magic we will believe dust is smoke. By the way ba Esther she cant be a wizard. Only men are wizards. Women are witches

  6. Old people who suffer from dementia or seizure disorder including young ones can wonder around in confused state. They could even be found naked but this does not mean there are wizards. This happens even in developed countries. So when such people are found wondering there must either be taken to the police or hospital but, best at the hospital where there can be assessed and manage their condition.
People should stop labelling such people what there are not. Tomorrow it will be your relative what are you going to do or feel?

  7. What a shame that africa does not recognise mental illness as a serious disorder needing care and support. The elderly who very often are afflicted by illnesses such as dementia, serious mental illness and delirium are accused of witchcraft by the general public or even family because of lack of awareness of these conditions. The government should make this a priority and stop the abuse of vulnerable elderly people.
It is very common for demented or delirious patients to wander off in a state of undress with no awareness and unfortunately the people around them do not understand these conditions.

  8. There is this dangerous perception among Africans that anyone who is very old is a witch or wizard.
Nowadays, ubuloshi (witchcraft) is among the young people. Please leave senior citizens alone and stop victimizing them.

  9. I totally agree with the comments from fellow bloggers. Elderly people need to be taken care of. Old age is associated with a lot of physical and mental complications and its very important for relatives to look out and ensure any signs are detected and taken care of in the early stages. Generally Africans view mental illnesses as a curse. People who are mentally ill are neglected and in some communities they get tied up like dangerous criminals instead of taking them to mental health facilities. Its unfortunate that the resident of Garden in whose premises the old lady was found in the night claiming that the gate was locked through out. Who knows the old lady could have sneaked in during the day or evening without being noticed. The notion of witchcraft is often planted in our minds…

  10. It is sad indeed whenever someone gets lost due to health issues, all what the people say suspect is witchcraft.
Our elderly people are not safe with such type of people around who always jumps to bad conclusions.
The old lady who is suffering from memory loss would have been history had it not for the good Samaritans in the name of C4 security personnel ……..
