National Biosafety Authority says GMO foods not allowed in Zambia

Share

The National Biosafety Authority (NBA) has clarified that it can not allow the importation of Genetically Modified Organic (GMO) foodstuffs into the country that can harm human and animal life.

NBA board chairman, Paul Zambezi says the authority is mandated by law to ensure that human and animal life are safeguarded.

Dr Zambezi has said reports by some sections of the media that the NBA has allowed the importation of GMO foodstuffs in the country are misleading as the authority has only allowed processed foods made from GMOs and genetically modified micro-organisms for diagnostics and health research purposes.

He said at a media briefing that the authority does not promote or prohibit Genetically Modified Organisms but regulates the use and development of GMOs.

Dr Zambezi said products that are allowed in the country that are genetically modified undergo a series of risk assessment tests.

  1. Dr Zambezi, don’t mislead the public. Most of of the processed products coming from South Africa have GMO ingredients in them. Even the wheat that is produced right here in Zambia by white farmers is mostly GMO. That is why Zambia brags that we don’t import wheat. Dr Zambezi what you know about agriculture production ?

  2. Look at this statement: “The authority has only allowed processed foods made from GMOs and genetically modified micro-organisms for diagnostics and health research purposes”. Oooohh mawe twafwa. This Zambezi has betrayed Zambians and the Government. We are in trouble.

  3. Dr. Zambezi you are an *****. on July 12 we had this story and i quote

“The National Biosafety Authority (NBA) has granted chain store Choppies Superstores a permit to import products that may contain Genetically Modified Organisms after the chain store made an application for the importation of products that are made from or may contain GMOS in May this year.

Among the products the chain store will import and place on the market include instant choppies porridge, chilli beef flavored soup, oxtail flavored soup, chakalaka flavored soup, brown onion soup and choppies corn flakes.

The NBA Board, during their last meeting held on Friday July 6, 2018, approved the application for a permit to import products that may contain GMOS by choppies superstores following a recommendation…

  4. …. just ask yourselves you so-called Zedians; have you ever seen mudzungus eating those ‘smelly’ Hangarian Soskises? Those are the types of foods including the matumbo, vifu, and ALL the offoals that contain these poisisons….

  5. GMO and organic produce cannot peacefully coexist. Zambia must decide which empowers the farmers and feeds the people sustainably.

  6. Even if theres no G.M crops in Zambia today, just one brown envelope to these belly cadre P.F. “poloticians”, & G.M. will be everywhere, even coming out of your ears, & rear ends, while silly Zambian cadres continue to hail the wisdom of ba Chakolwa’s corrupt enterprise.
The American embassy has already advised, & commented on the role the brown envelope plays in Chakolwa Pombe’s corrupt & nepotistic Zambia.
