Witchcraft haunts Gwembe health workers

Share

Makuyu health workers in Gwembe district have been living in fear for four months now due to alleged witchcraft practices at the clinic.

Speaking during the meeting held at Makuyu clinic by the district promotion task force and the community, Gwembe district health promotions officer Masuzyo Mwanza said the issue of witchcraft in the area has been going on since September this year.

Mr. Mwanza told the community that there is no reason for the community members to be attacking the health workers at the facility as they are there to save their lives.

He added that if the health workers continue working in fear, their service delivery will be affected due to lack of enough sleep and peace of mind.

And speaking at the same event, Gwembe District Commissioner Justus Phiri, who is also the chairperson for the district health promotion task force, said practicing witchcraft should come to an end especially that many people are now Christians.

Mr. Phiri told the Makuyu community that witchcraft will never develop the area.

He explained that if the witchcraft attacks on the health workers continue, they may decide to leave the facility and it will be the entire community that will suffer.

He added that the community should stop the practice and live in harmony with everyone for the development of the district.

Meanwhile, District Director of Health John Simwanza said it is very disappointing that Makuyu community has started threatening the lives of the health workers and yet they were recently requesting for a health facility in the area.

Dr. Simwanza urged the community to learn to work together with the health workers because they were sent there to serve the community.

And the district health promotion taskforce seized the opportunity to talk to the community about different health issues such as antenatal, men involvement and male circumcision.

  1. No such thing as witchcraft, only illusions imprinted into the minds of believers.

Gwembe valley , my old boarding school place…fond memories I have of the rolling hills and the smell of the kariba water.

The taiste of beans still lingers on my tongue from those many meals in the running hall……

  2. Witchcraft hates development and progress. It thrives and rejoices in poverty and high mortality rates. Even teachers who are sent to rural remote areas face this epidemic called witchcraft. Zambia is a Christian nation ,can the Ministry of Guidance and Religious Affairs and Ministry of Information and Civic organizations begin to position themselves to stamp out or eradicate this disease called witchcraft. We want our professionals sent to remote areas to sleep and work peacefully.

  3. These witches are there! I know of a friend of mine was posted to Zambezi District, he always used to dream of a man threatening and asking him why he spoke to his daughter? also saying you will marry her if not you will die, so he fled in pretence of feather studies to avoid going back to the same school. Yaba!! wrong move he fall sick and never continued his studies until he disclose what made him leave Zambezi and was advised to go back and marry the dream girl, efyo apola umunensu…!!!

  4. Nonsense ! What witchcraft are you dreaming about? When you over think and imagine things, your thoughts become reality and you start being scared of your own shadow !! If there is such a thing as witchcraft, why then don’t they topple the incompetent ruling party ?

  5. A responsible state should ensure that civilisation touches the minds of the poor so that they become disillusioned from such witchcraft beliefs and practices. The state can also facilitate the practice of herbal medicine instead of stereotyping those who practice it. This habit of calling God to our rescue is sometimes very retrogressive and people should use their skills and knowledge to overcome such challenges. How long have people been seeking divine intervention but still wallowing in poverty?????? get a life people!!!!!! …

  6. Let us get the WITCHES to compete! K50000 to winner. Live on Prime TV.

    4. Eastern (Vinyau)
I am rooting for (2), with first round knock-outs!

  7. 1. Most if not all so-called traditional doctors are actually witches
    2. There is too much dependence on witchcraft by many Zambians and this is not confined to villagers but includes urban areas and the educated (some pastors are in it too).
    3. Witchcraft undermines development. No nation has ever developed through the witchcraft (look at Haiti)
    4. There is no substitute for hard-work; put your hands to work Zambia.
