Minister of Water Development and Sanitation, Collins Nzovu, says the government is committed to strengthening collaboration with China to enhance water and sanitation development in Zambia.
Speaking when a delegation from the Chinese Ministry of Water Resources paid a courtesy call on him in Lusaka today, Mr Nzovu said the partnership between the two countries continues to yield tangible results in the water sector.
“The government is ready to work with the Chinese people to improve water sanitation in the country,” he said.
He added that ongoing efforts between the two sides are a testament to the strength of their cooperation.
Mr Nzovu cited the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with Power China in August 2024, which launched critical planning and research studies for two major projects namely Luapula-Kafue Water Transfer Project and the Comprehensive Water Development Plan for the Kafue catchment.
“These are transformative projects that will redefine water security in Zambia,” he said.
He has meanwhile revealed that another MoU, which will aim at undertaking feasibility studies for the Lunga and Kifubwa dams, will be signed before this year ends.
The MoU will boost irrigation and water supply for the Zambian communities living around the two dams.
Mr Nzovu said the mutual friendship between Zambia and China has enabled both countries to jointly explore opportunities for investment and innovation in water management and hydropower development.
He has since reaffirmed Zambia’s readiness to cooperate with the Chinese government on hydropower and renewable energy initiatives to support the development of solar power plants and strengthen the country’s energy mix.
Meanwhile, Vice Minister of Water Resources of China, Wang Baoen, said China and Zambia have enjoyed a long and friendly cooperation in the water sector, especially under the Belt and Road Initiative.
Mr Baoen also said the Chinese Ministry of Water Resources and its affiliated institutions have signed an MoU on small hydropower cooperation with the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA).

One minister who is standing out and working hard this one. The opposition should work hard. Just now watching the Zambia we want President saying we will ask the Zambians what they want and we will do what the want. Do you mean you still do not know what Zambians want. And he further says we will make sure we put the economy in the hands of Zambians with no elaboration on how this will be done, if its partnerships, its already happening. And by the way there is no law stopping Zambians from running any business currently. Obviously UPND has failed big time, but who will be our Saviour?
