The Basic Education Teachers Union of Zambia (BETUZ) has empowered over 200 of its members with 30 by 25 metres pieces of land in Lusaka’s 18 Miles area under the union’s Land Empowerment Scheme.
BETUZ General Secretary, Henry Sinkala said the initiative demonstrates the union’s commitment to ensuring that teachers across the country have access to affordable land, giving them the dignity that comes with ownership.
Speaking when he handed over offer letters in Lusaka today, Mr Sinkala stated that land ownership will provide teachers with sustainable assets capable of generating income through farming and rentals.
“Access to land allows teachers to engage in agriculture, contributing to household and community food security. It also aligns with broader national goals of sustainable and rural development,” he said.
Mr Sinkala noted that the initiative is transformative, describing it as a structural investment in teachers’ dignity, security and contribution to national development.
He added that land ownership elevates teachers’ social standing, reinforcing their status as respected professionals and community leaders.
Speaking at the same event, Lusaka Province BETUZ Deputy Director, Josephat Mulenga, reaffirmed the province’s commitment to ensuring transparency and fairness in the allocation of land to teachers under the union’s housing initiative.
Mr Mulenga said the project is aimed at empowering teachers by enabling them to own land through a clear and corruption-free process.
He noted that the initiative reflects the union’s dedication to improving the welfare of its members and ensuring they benefit meaningfully from their membership.
