The deceased has been identified as Kelly Miyoba, who had recently completed his pharmacy programme and was scheduled to graduate on May 22.
According to sources close to the family, Miyoba was discovered dead by a friend he had been staying with in Makeni.
It is reported that around 17:00 hours, relatives received a phone call from the deceased’s grandfather informing them that Miyoba had been found dead.
The source explained that Miyoba’s friend discovered the body and later alerted the police.
Police officers reportedly went to the house and attempted to unlock the deceased’s phone in order to identify and notify his relatives.
However, officers were initially unable to access the phone and took the body to the mortuary while continuing efforts to trace family members.
Police later managed to unlock the phone and obtained contact details for Miyoba’s grandfather, who was contacted and asked to go to the mortuary to identify the body.
Upon arrival, the grandfather confirmed that the body was that of his grandson.
The exact cause of Miyoba’s death has not yet been established.
Family members are reportedly still trying to understand what may have led to the young man’s death.
News of Miyoba’s passing has also shocked fellow students and members of the medical fraternity.
Students from Ridgeway Campus, where pharmacy students are based, have shared messages of mourning on social media, describing the death as heartbreaking.
“Kelly Miyoba was one of us not long ago and it is heartbreaking to receive the news that he is no longer with us,” the UNZA Ridgeway Students Union said.
According to fellow students, Miyoba had completed his studies a few months ago and was waiting to celebrate his academic milestone during the upcoming graduation ceremony.
Students have indicated that they may organise a candlelight memorial in his honour as they await guidance from the family.
Authorities have not yet issued a formal statement on the matter.
