Zanaco reaffirms commitment to financial inclusion

Zanaco Bank has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting financial inclusion at the University of Zambia (UNZA) and the country at large.

The media reports that speaking during the reopening of the refurbished Zanaco UNZA branch in Lusaka, ZANACO Chief Commercial Officer, Chali Mwafyeni, said the development is a testament for the bank’s continued commitment to making financial services accessible, affordable and efficient.

“Today’s occasion is not merely about unveiling a refurbished banking facility, but about reinforcing our commitment to expanding access, creating opportunities and empowering Zambia’s next generation financially,” he said.

He noted that UNZA remains one of the country’s most influential institutions and, as the largest public university in Zambia, represents a vibrant community of students with immense potential.

Mr Mwafyeni explained that the refurbishment of the UNZA branch forms part of ZANACO’s broader brand modernisation programme aimed at enhancing customer experience and service delivery.

He added that the upgraded facility also supports the national financial inclusion agenda, which seeks to ensure that at least 85 percent of adults have access to quality financial services by 2028.

“This branch therefore strengthens our contribution towards achieving that national target, while investing in the ecosystem that produces Zambia’s future workforce,” Mr Mwafyeni said.

UNZA Vice Chancellor, Mundia Muya, commended the bank for modernising the Zanaco UNZA branch, describing the development as a clear demonstration of the institution’s dedication to service excellence, innovation and meeting the evolving financial needs of the university community.

Professor Muya said the reopening of the facility comes at a crucial time when the university has more than 34,000 students and over 1,200 members of staff who require convenient and reliable financial services.

He noted that having a modern, inclusive and customer-focused banking facility within the campus will significantly improve convenience and operational efficiency for both students and staff.

Prof Muya added that the upgraded branch reflects Zanaco’s commitment to delivering accessible and digitally integrated banking solutions that respond to the rapidly changing financial landscape.

He further stated that the long-standing relationship between UNZA and Zanaco goes beyond routine financial transactions, describing it as a partnership anchored on trust, shared values and a collective commitment to national development.

The Vice Chancellor also acknowledged the bank’s support to the institution during some of its most challenging financial periods.

“Universities are centres of knowledge creation and human capital development, while financial institutions are key drivers of economic growth and empowerment.

“When these two sectors work together, the impact on society can be transformative,” he said.
