Don’t Attach Every Government Programme to Elections – Nkandu

Minister of Youth, Sport and Arts Elvis Nkandu has urged critics to stop linking every government development programme to politics and the upcoming August 13 general elections.

Speaking during a live appearance on a TV interview , Nkandu said it is unfair for critics to assume that government initiatives, particularly those targeting young people, are being implemented simply because elections are approaching.

Nkandu said since the United Party for National Development (UPND) administration took office under President Hakainde Hichilema, it has consistently prioritised the welfare of Zambian citizens through various development programmes.

“This is the problem we have always had in this country. Every good thing that the government does is attached to politics, which is very wrong,” Nkandu said.

He explained that the government’s focus is to empower young people so they can reach their full potential, foster innovation and contribute to both local and national development.

“Our focus is to empower youths to reach their full potential, foster innovation, and drive local and national development from the frontline,” he said.

Nkandu noted that government cannot implement all programmes at once, which is why some initiatives are being concluded this year, not because it is an election year.

He added that citizens should not be denied development simply because critics may interpret government programmes as campaign strategies.

The minister further encouraged young people to take charge of their lives and make use of available opportunities rather than waiting for white-collar jobs.

“Young people should wake up and take leadership roles in various sectors and contribute positively to society,” he said.

Nkandu is currently in Solwezi ahead of this year’s Youth Day celebrations where President Hichilema is expected to officiate.

This year’s celebrations will be held under the theme “Arise and Soar.”
