Ministry of Defence Permanent Secretary Maambo Hamaundu has urged youths to avoid excessive alcohol consumption driven by frustration, encouraging them instead to enrol in Zambia National Service (ZNS) programmes to build resilience and discipline.
Hamaundu said the ZNS initiative equips young people with life skills, endurance and the ability to face challenges with a positive mindset.
And Hamaundu said government will continue to maintain peace and security as the country approaches the 2026 general elections, stressing the importance of stability during the electoral period.
He emphasized that young people have a critical role to play in preserving peace and should not allow themselves to be used in activities that may disrupt national unity.
“Instead of resorting to alcohol because of frustration, youths should take advantage of programmes like ZNS which are meant to empower them with skills and discipline for a better future,” he said.
Hamaundu further encouraged young people to remain focused and productive, noting that government has continued to invest in empowerment initiatives aimed at improving livelihoods.
He added that maintaining peace before, during and after elections is a shared responsibility, calling on youths to be ambassadors of unity in their communities.
The Permanent Secretary reaffirmed government’s commitment to supporting youth development and ensuring that security wings remain alert to safeguard the country.
