Julius Malema Sentenced to Five Years in Prison Over Firearm Offences

Julius Malema, a prominent South African opposition leader and head of the Economic Freedom Fighters, has been sentenced to five years in prison after being found guilty of illegal possession of a firearm and discharging it in public.

The sentencing follows his conviction last year on multiple charges, including unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, as well as reckless endangerment. The case stems from a 2018 incident in which a video surfaced showing Malema firing a semi-automatic rifle into the air during his party’s fifth anniversary celebrations in the Eastern Cape.

During court proceedings, Malema maintained that the firearm did not belong to him and said he had fired the shots to excite the crowd. Despite his defence, the court found him guilty on all counts.

His legal team has since indicated that they will appeal the ruling in an effort to prevent his imprisonment. The five-year sentence could also have significant political consequences, including the possibility of disqualification from serving as a Member of Parliament.

Appearing calm in court, Malema showed little visible reaction as the sentence was delivered. However, in earlier remarks to supporters, he described the prospect of imprisonment as a “badge of honour,” stating that he would not be intimidated by the outcome.
