President Hakainde Hichilema has reaffirmed his commitment to upgrading Mooya Health Post in Bweengwa, Monze District, into a Level One Hospital, with plans to construct additional infrastructure aimed at improving the provision of quality healthcare services.
Speaking during a tour of the facility on April 17, 2026, the President said the upgrade will include key components such as a mortuary and modern medical equipment to meet the growing health needs of the community.
The Head of State noted that the health post was initially constructed by his family using personal resources, long before he assumed public office, as a demonstration of his dedication to improving healthcare and giving back to his home area.
President Hichilema emphasized the importance of community-driven development, urging citizens to remember their roots and contribute to national progress using their own resources.
“Let us all remember where we come from and work together with government in driving development across various sectors,” he said.
He added that the facility’s earlier reopening had faced setbacks due to political challenges at the time, which discouraged private citizens from undertaking such initiatives.
“Political issues affected the early reopening of this clinic because some people did not believe that individuals could support such developments. Today, people are free to invest in their communities,” the President stated.
The President further encouraged professionals, businesspeople, and civil servants to take an active role in supporting development initiatives in their respective home areas.
“Businessmen, permanent secretaries, and anyone with means should remember where they come from and contribute to uplifting their communities,” he said.
First Lady Mutinta Hichilema also expressed happiness at seeing the facility operational and saving lives, describing it as a meaningful way for the family to give back to the community.
“As a family, we are happy to see this project making a difference and saving lives. This is our way of giving back to the community that raised us,” she said.
Meanwhile, the facility in-charge Melody Shamainda thanked the President for his continued support towards the construction and improvement of the health post, noting that it serves a catchment population of over 5,000 people.
She appealed to the government to consider naming the facility after President Hichilema in recognition of his contribution to its establishment and development.
“This facility has transformed healthcare delivery in this area, and we are grateful for the President’s support. It is our humble request that it be named after you Mr President,” she said.
Senior Clinical Care Officer Evans Mvula also praised the planned upgrade, stating that transforming the health post into a Level One Hospital will significantly improve service delivery and reduce referrals to distant facilities such as Monze Mission Hospital.
Mr Mvula said the expansion will help address challenges such as limited space and inadequate equipment, adding that the development will enhance the facility’s capacity to manage a wider range of medical conditions within the community.
In a related development, President Hichilema also supported the construction of six classrooms at Mooya Primary School, his former school, as part of efforts to improve access to quality education in the area.
During a tour of the school, the President took time to recall details of his early school days, reaffirming his commitment to enhancing support to the education sector and ensuring that learners study in a conducive environment.
