Police officer dies in a road traffic accident

A 25-year-old police officer has died following a fatal road traffic accident that occurred at Kalumbila GIT area along Kalumbila housing road.

North-Western Province Police Commanding Officer Brighton Siwale confirmed the incident to the media, identifying the deceased as Constable Makani Choonga of Kalumbila Police Station.

Mr Siwale said the accident happened on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, around 20:25 hours at the GIT area along the Kalumbila Housing Road.

He explained that Constable Choonga was walking on the left side of the road from north to south when he was hit by a Toyota Hiace minibus, registration number ADE 9896 ZM.

“The accident occurred when the driver lost control of the motor vehicle due to excessive speed and hit the pedestrian who was completely off the road,” Mr Siwale said.

He said the victim sustained serious injuries, including a fractured right arm, a cut on the left eyebrow, and general body pains.

Constable Choonga was rushed to Wumi Mini Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

His body has since been deposited at the same facility, awaiting a post-mortem.

Mr Siwale added that the driver of the vehicle escaped unhurt and is currently in police custody, awaiting formal charges of causing death by dangerous driving.

Meanwhile, the motor vehicle involved in the accident sustained damage, including a broken left headlamp, a deformed bonnet, and a shattered front windscreen.

It has since been impounded at Kalumbila Police Station pending inspection by the Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA).
