A 77-year-old visually impaired man of Nyamulopa Village, in Petauke District, Eastern Province has committed suicide by hanging.
The deceased, identified as Isaac Tembo, had been living with the impairment for 10 years, a situation that is believed to have driven him to ending his life.
The media reports that Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer, Robertson Mweemba confirmed the incident saying the body was discovered at a graveyard, hanging to a tree, using a chitenge material.
Mr Mweemba, said the incident is believed to have happened between Saturday 25 April, at around 20:00 hours, and 08:00 hours yesterday, April 26.
“Brief facts of the matter are that the deceased who used to stay alone in his house had been blind for 10 years, something he had not been comfortable with and had always been complaining and threatening that one day he would commit suicide,” he said.
The Police Commanding Officer added that the now deceased also had a trend of staying at the graveyard during day time which is about 110 meters away from the village.
“The victim was last seen on Saturday, April 25th around 20:00 hours when he was served Nshima by his niece, Racheal Banda. And on 26th April, 2026 around 09:00hrs Mr Tembo was discovered hanging at the same graveyard. He was found by a passerby who immediately informed the relatives,” Mr Mweemba noted.
He said that following the report, police visited the scene where the body was found hanging.
He noted that upon inspection of the body, no foul play was suspected and the body was handed over to the relatives for burial.
